CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY ART EXHIBITION | DISPLAY | ART GALLERY PUTTI | RIGA 2019 | SHOWCASE
13 Estonian contemporary jewelry artists will exhibit their artwork at the group exhibition FOGSPEAK / UDUJUTT.
Gray-toned verticals and foggy conversations will be created by a group of contemporary jewelry artists from Estonia at Art gallery PUTTI.
Tanel Veenre: ‘Our artisan culture is rooted in the forest. It sounds simple, but it is exactly in this feature that there is magic. The archaic yet clean wooden style is at the base of all abstraction. There is no need for noise here; whispers are loud enough.’
Each artist showing work in the exhibition is one of a kind. The artists are both united and contrasting at the same time. When looking at the jewelry that they have created, one senses that when making their pieces, these artists focus on spiritual qualities; the works on view have an introverted quality, perhaps even a touch of darkness to them – features that, just like a fixation on details, are so very characteristic of Northern peoples.
People speak about spiritual endeavors, the wish to be active outside the realm of physical reality. The ability to create noise and scraps while retaining a clear surface. The closeness of nature, the sensitivity of a fingerprint, and even if your ears are not within your field of vision, you cannot escape them.
A piece of contemporary jewellery illustrates a feeling of magic and temptation; much like a cult, nature is an intrinsic part of contemporary jewellery. It is safe to say that, having attracted the attention of the world, the jewellery artists of today’s Estonia form the foundation of the contemporary art jewellery platform. Of course, it is impossible to completely abandon form and context, yet make no mistake – an artist creates not only objects, but also the space for communication between the artwork and the person.

Macquarie University Art Gallery - Transplantation: A Sense of Place and Culture exhibition
Transplantation: A sense of Place and Culture features twelve contemporary jewellery artists from the UK and Australia and explores the theme of place and cultural identity arising from their personal and family experiences of transplantation.
Jewellery offers an art form which provides a means of recording memory and experience in a portable and wearable form. Through this medium it is possible to express ideas, thoughts, and concerns, which may not be achievable in other ways. Twelve contemporary jewellery artists from the UK and Australia have been selected to create up to three pieces of work each, which will articulate the notion of transplantation in a tangible form.
Each artist in this exhibition has their own experience of cultural, familial and artistic transplantation of one sort or another that they have drawn on to create work which is powerful, engaging and thought-provoking.
Curator: Professor Norman Cherry
Artists: Jivan Astfalck (UK), Roseanne Bartley (AU), Nicholas Bastin (AU), Norman Cherry (UK), Lin Cheung (UK), Jack Cunningham (UK), Anna Davern (AU), Joungmee Do (AU), Sheridan Kennedy (AU), Bridie Lander (UK/AU), Jo Pond (UK), and Laura Potter (UK)
The exhibition will be on display for an additional period at Macquarie University Library exhibition space (Building C3C) 12 March - 11 April 2014.
Transplantation was developed by the University of Lincoln and assisted by the National Centre for Craft and Design and the Arts Council England. In Australia it is toured by the Museum and Gallery Services Queensland.
