Memento Park is an open-air museum in Budapest, Hungary, dedicated to monumental statues and sculpted plaques from Hungary's Communist period (1949–1989). There are statues of Lenin, Marx, and Engels, as well as several Hungarian Communist leaders. The park was designed by Hungarian architect Ákos Eleőd, who won the competition announced by the Budapest General Assembly (Fővárosi Közgyűlés) in 1991. On public transport diagrams and other documents the park is usually shown as Memorial Park.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE PAST AT MEMENTO PARK | Budapest, Hungary | The Fluffies Channel
We learned about an open-air museum called Memento Park, in Hungary, which was dedicated to monumental statues and sculpted plaques from this time in Hungary’s history. So being a statue lover, we had to visit it.
One of the things that make Budapest a great tourist location is that it is a city full of statutes. Many of those statues have to do with a time when Hungary was under Communist regime (1949-1989).
In 1991, the Budapest General Assembly decided to have a competition to find a place to house the many statues that were taken down. The winner of this contest was Hungarian architect Akos Eleód and Memento Park was built. It opened its doors on June 29, 1993, the second anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Hungarian territory
Memento Park is divided into two sections. The first part is called Statue Park and is located inside the park. It is laid out in 6 oval sections and is made up of 42 statues/monuments that were immediately removed from Budapest after the fall of communism. Witness Square (also called Neverwas Square”, which lies east of the main park entrance and is visible without payment, has a replica of the famous Stalin’s boots which has since become a symbol of the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 after the statue of Stalin was pulled down from its pedestal.
The park is open every day from 10:00am until sunset. Tickets cost 1.500 HUF or 1.000 HUF students with ISIC.

Memento Park, Budapest
A short walking tour and images from Memento Park outside of Budapest. These are relics, some creepy and some sad and some stunning, from communist era Hungary. It is hard to realize that such a lovely and old city as Budapest could have fallen under communist control for several decades.
It took about an hour to get there by train then bus, but I thought the trip was worth it. There is a lovely commercial nursery next door, and also worth visiting. I even bought a small trowel there.
Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Budapest - Memento Park
This clip from Tom's Travels in Hungary & Croatia features the Memento Park open-air museum in Budapest, which contains statues from Hungary's communist past. The statues, some of which are a colossal size. would once have been found all over Budapest as a way to help exert communist authority over the local population.

MEMENTO PARK BUDAPEST TRAVELVLOG

Remains of Communist Dictatorship
Memento Park is an open air museum in Budapest, dedicated to monumental statues from Hungary's Communist period (1949--1989). There are statues of Lenin, Marx, and Engels, and several Hungarian Communist leaders. The park was designed by Hungarian architect, Ákos Eleőd, who won the competition announced by the Budapest General Assembly (Fővárosi Közgyűlés) in 1991. Thus the architect: This park is about dictatorship. And at the same time, because it can be talked about, described, built, this park is about democracy. After all, only democracy is able to give the opportunity to let us think freely about dictatorship.
