Prom clip Memorial Museum PASSCHENDAELE 1917 ZONNEBEKE
Promotion clip MMP1917
Zonnebeke and Passendale are two little villages, at a stone's throw from Ypres. During the British attack of 1917, there were 500.000 casulaties in 100 days for a gain territory of only 5 miles. Passchendaele became an international symbol of senseless military violence in its most cruel form. In the Memorial Museum the memory of the battle is kept alive through images and movies, a large collection of historical artefacts and several life-like-diorama's. Eye-cathcher is an underground dugout tunnel with communication- and dressing post, headquarters, workplaces and dormitories. A breathtaking experience of how the British had to live underground like moles... just because there was nothing left above. The museum is set up in the historical castle of Zonnebeke, on the road to Tyne Cot Cemetery. Tyne Cot is the biggest military cemetery of the Commonwealth with 12.000 graves and an impressive Missing Memorial. You can also pay a visit to a recently discovered underground dressing post, the German trenches in Bayernwald and strategic points like the Menin Road, 's Graventafel and Polygon Wood with a professional guide. The Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 is an ideal starting point for a visit to the old battlefields, an absolute must for tourists ands specialists.

Visit Belgium - 13/589 – Zonnebeke - World War 1, Dugout, Passchendaele & Tyne Cot Cemetery
A Belgian Challenge, I would like to visit all 589 Belgian Municipalities. In this video visit Zonnebeke, a municipality in the province of West-Flanders and known from the First World War.
We started our day in Zonnebeke with a visit to the church Dugout. This dugout is not reconstructed but completely authentic (it takes you back to 1917) and it’s open for public until the 10th of November 2017.
After this visit which took about 20 minutes, we visited the nearby Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917. The museum explains all about the First World War and it has a reconstructed dugout. Definitely worth a visit! The museum is located in a chateau park and in this park you can also find the Memorial Gardens of New Zealand, Canada, UK, Germany, USA and Belgium.
We ended the day at the Tyne Cot Cemetary, which is the largest Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in the world and the most important reminder of the Battle of Passchendaele from 1917.

100 Wapenstilstand / 100 years Armistice (Passendale, Zonnebeke)
Different partners collaborated to develop a total programme that proclaims the universal message of peace in a serene and respectful manner. This programme was an initiative of the Flemish Government in collaboration with the Municipality of Zonnebeke and MMP 1917, the City of Ieper and the In Flanders Fields Museum, the Last Post Association and Westtoer. On Saturday 10 november the annual 'Passchendaele Ceremony' with torch parade took place in Passendale. With this ceremony we commemorate the end of the Battle of Passchendaele and all casualties, communities and countries involved. This year we also focussed on Armistice during the ceremony. After the ceremony the concert 'Distortion, a Hymn to Liberty' took place at the Zonnebeke Chateau Grounds. In 2014, the Flemish Government approached Dirk Brossé, Jef Neve and Frederik Sioen to work together on the composition of a new work for this remembrance concert. The three composers - each with a different musical background - were asked to create a single piece, a hymn to commemorate what happened between 1914 and 1918. After much reading, historical research, frank discussion and fruitful interaction, they eventually found a theme on which they could all agree. And so Distortion, a Hymn to Liberty was born. The title speaks for itself. Ultimate freedom, both for individuals and nations, could only be achieved at the cost of distortion. People were torn away from everything they held dear and no longer knew the difference between up or down, good or bad. Even so, fighting for freedom, in itself a contradiction, was necessary at the time to survive. The result of this collaboration is a unique masterpiece, in which each composer has used his own musical style and language to make a personal contribution to this lyrical exploration of the themes of ‘peace and freedom’. Each composer worked in complete independence. The only thing that bound them together was their love for the expressive power of music and their respect for each other’s talent. The outcome is a mosaic of different atmospheres, gripping emotions and refined timbres.

Memorial Museum Passendale 1917

With ‘The Passchendaele Archives Database’ the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 aims at adding a face and a story to those who gave their lives during the Battle of Passchendaele. They no longer only will be a name on a wall of missed in action or on a tombstone, but hence they shall have their own discernible spot in the landscape.
Would you have a relative or a link with a soldier who died at the Battle of Passchendaele? A file is started on the basis of a questionnaire and possibly additional documentation such as letters and photographs. The museum investigates for you what exactly happened on that fatal day. Share your family history with us and ensure by that way that their stories still will continue to live on in the future.
