The Thunder Bay North Stars capped off a successful three-game road trip with a third victory in as many nights after defeating the Fort Frances Lakers 5-3 in Superior International Junior Hockey League play Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.
Fort Frances did start strong in this one by skating out to an early 2-0 lead on tallies from Kendyn Faragher and Chase Robideau to go up by a pair.
Thunder Bay did cut into the deficit before the first frame was complete when Robert Tyska finished off the work teammates Jacob Anttonen and Jonathan Kilby.
The North Stars were quick out of the gate to begin the middle session to knot the affair as Keighan Gerrie collected his league-leading seventh of the season 21 seconds into the stanza.
Michael Vecchio then gave the visitors their first lead on the evening as his initial SIJHL tally put the guests in front for good.
They then capped off a strong period with 45 seconds left as Ryan Mignault set-up Joel Willan to put Thunder Bay up by a pair.
Fort Frances battled back to pull within one with 3:35 remaining in regulation as Nick Lucas was left with a tap in giving him points in five straight outings dating back to last season.
The Lakers then pulled starter Matt Booth in favour of an extra attacker in an effort to try a force overtime, but Ryan Mignault iced it from long range with an empty netter giving him goals in four straight games as well as points in five in succession.
Brock Aiken picked up the win for the North Stars making 29 stops on the night helping them improve to 4-0-1 on the season while Matt Booth faced 39 shots in defeat for the Lakers who suffered their first loss, slipping to 3-1 overall.

A Chase Robideau goal 13:40 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Fort Frances Lakers went on to defeat the visiting Red Lake Miners 5-3 in Superior International Junior Hockey League action Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.
Reece Hopfner got the Lakers going offensively 84 seconds after the opening face-off as he notched his fourth tally of the season.
Red Lake got that back midway through the first off, the stick of Keegan Tiringer only to see Noah Loveday put Fort Frances back on top a few minutes later.
The back and forth affair saw the Miners’ Connor Jacobs tie it once more with the lone marker of the middle stanza as the two sides went to the intermission knotted at 2-2.
Taking advantage of a power play chance, Kirk Coppock put the Lakers back in front at 5:41 of the third as he picked up his 10th of the year. He also dished out two assists for a three-point night.
Robideau then doubled the Fort Frances cushion as they went up by two with 6:20 remaining in regulation.
Continuing to battle, Red Lake drew closer once more as Bryce Young collected his league-leading 33rd with two and a half minutes to go.
However, Nick Lucas helped secure the victory with an empty netter for the Lakers.
Matt Booth made 33 saves to record the win for Fort Frances while Zach Willms saw 38 attempts fired his way in defeat for Red Lake.

Dougie Newhouse handled all 24 shots he faced to record his fifth shutout of the season as the Thunder Bay North Stars blanked the Fort Frances Lakers 2-0 in a low-scoring Superior International Junior Hockey League goaltenders duel Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.
Fort Frances netminder Jacob Gnizziejko turned in a stellar performance for the Lakers finishing with 50 saves in the narrow defeat while only allowing one puck to get past him on the night.
After a scoreless first frame, Thunder Bay finally connected late in the second stanza as Jacob Brown scored on his club’s 37 shot of the contest.
It stayed 1-0 until the final moments of regulation when Michael Stubbs put one into an empty net at 19:49 to help seal the road decision.
The victory was the 12th in a row for Newhouse as he improved to 18-1-1 in his past 20 appearances for the league-leading North Stars.

With a Laker unassisted goal, Jaden Gustafson sank Fort Frances’ first of the contest 1:49 into the first period. Tyler Minoletti evens the game 1 – 1 at the 6:31 mark of the opening period for the North Stars. Joe Newhouse and Jesse Talakoski drew the assists on Minoletti’s goal. Thunder Bay’s Minoletti’s fires his second of the period at 8:18 of the first to give the North Stars a 2 – 1 lead. Brad Thrower had the helper on Minoletti’s goal. Thunder Bay’s Kris Hamlin gives the visitors a 3 – 1 lead 2:56 into the second period with contributors coming from Brendan Gillis and Justin Muir. With the North Stars on a power play, Hamlin finds the back of the Lakers net to increase Thunder Bay’s lead to 4 – 1. Newhouse and Talakoski set up Hamlin’s second of the game at 8:37 of the second.
At 12:51 of the second and on a Fort Frances power play, Jared Vitanen pulls the Lakers within two with Josh Gouin and Dylan Kooner adding the assists. Thunder Bay’s Muir fires a pass to North Star Brad Arabia to bring the lead to 5 – 2 at 14:04 of the middle stanza. Thrower and Talakoski had the contributors on Thunder Bay’s sixth of the game scored by John Parrot.
Laker veteran Dylan Kooner sank his first of two in the third at 16:40 of the period with a pass from Vitanen. With Fort Frances shorthanded, Laker Kooner found the back of the North Star net at 13:09 of the period. Vitanen registered the helper on Kooner’s goal. With 1:29 left in the contest, Julian Uhryniuk fires a Laker goal with Brandon Zajicek and Tanner Granham.
Fort Frances netminders Brandon Bodnar and Dylan Ossachuk shared the goaltending duties in the Lakers 6 – 5 loss to the North Stars, Bodnar turned away 24 shots while the Ossachuk stopped 12 shots from Thunder Bay.

An Alex Maticic marker 9:25 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay North Stars held off a Fort Frances Lakers comeback bid in pulling out a 5-4 road victory Saturday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ice for Kids Arena.
Thunder Bay got off to a solid start by grabbing a 2-0 lead after one period of play on goals from Alexander Erwin and Turner Santin.
The North Stars then went up by three early in the middle session on rookie Keighan Gerrie’s 14th tally of the season.
Battling back, Fort Frances countered with goals in under a five-minute span to knot the affair at three.
Ian Jarvis struck shorthanded for the Lakers at 8:46 while teammate Jack Bernie added one at even strength 34 seconds later to make it 3-2.
The home side kept coming and put another one past Thunder Bay starter Brandon Bodnar during a man advantage that was provided by Jack Dunnell at 13:03.
Jake Behse put the North Stars back on top in the first shift of the third only to see Jarvis notch his second of the evening and 11th overall at 5:31 to tie things up once more.
However Maticic’s marker midway through the session ended up being the final one of the night as the visitors held on for the victory. He also had two assists for a three-point outing.
Bodnar made 37 saves to pick-up the win for Thunder Bay while Brett Akins faced 34 attempts in defeat for Fort Frances.
