Piece of hair of Prophet Mohammed displayed at Imam Hussein Museum
The Museum of the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine displayed a piece of hair, believed to belong to the Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him and his progeny, on the blessed birth anniversary of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him
The piece of hair is displayed on the third and fourth of Sha’ban month of every Islamic calendar year.
Saeed Zumaizem, historian, said the piece of hair had been kept in the mosque of the Prophet in Hejaz where the belongings of the Prophet Mohammed and Ahlul-Bayet, peace be upon him and his progeny, had been.
After the Ottoman invasion of Hejaz, the piece of hair and other belongings had been taken to Istanbul where they remained until the Ottoman state collapsed; the piece of hair was then presented to the ruler of Baghdad Dawood Basha in 1309, and ever since, it remained in the safe of the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine until the museum was established where it is now displayed every single year, added Zumaizem.
Najaf memorializes Shiite icons in wax museum
The holy city of Najaf in Iraq will soon exhibit over 50 wax figures of prominent Shiite Muslim icons, poets and scholars that have influenced both history and the city's modern life.
The Museum of Celebrity is one of the projects designed to herald Najaf's stance as the Capital of Islamic Culture in 2012, as chosen by the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization back in October 2009.
Furqan Ali Mirza, head of Najaf's Writing, Documentation and Publishing Center says the goal of the project is to spotlight the achievements of these personalities.
The purpose of the exhibit is to highlight and honor the role of the distinguished men of the holy city of Najaf including scientists and academics who served Najaf in the scientific and cultural fields and also to highlight Najaf's role in Iraq and the world as a whole.
The museum was inspired by a similar wax museum in Lebanon as well as the world famous Madame Tussauds, but it still manages to differentiate itself by the material used to fashion the sculptures, lending it to be strikingly lifelike.
Selecting the icons was a difficult task due to the overwhelming number of candidates and a limited budget of 550 million Iraqi dinars ($447,000), Mirza said.
As a start some 300 figures were chosen because Najaf has a treasure of influential cultural figures. Then through a highly complicated and meticulous process, the number was reduced to 150 and then finally narrowed down to 59. The work was done by an Iranian company in the beginning. Until now we have received more than 10 figures out of the 59, he said.
Some of the figures on display include Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Sadeq al-Sadr, Shiite scholars Mohammed Ridha al-Mudhafar and Jawad al-Shirazi.
Each wax figure will be allocated its own room and accompanied by copies of the person's work, manuscripts and photographs.
Najaf, which once bore signs of destruction from clashes between U.S. forces and Sadr militants in August 2004, is being redeveloped because pilgrims come in droves to visit the tombs of Shiite holy men.

Memories of Syria - Pt 27 - Hama: Religious & Historical Sites
The Arabian Magazine is pleased to present Volume 2 in our 'Memories' series.
Volume 2 includes video footage taken during the World Arabian Horse Organisation (WAHO) Conference in Syria at the end of 2007. The initial parts include all the presentations and parades of Arabian horses, mostly from the Bedouin tribes across Syria.
The latter parts cover the visits to historic sites and also other events involving the peoples of Syria.
Part 27 covers the tour of religious and historical sites in Hama.
All of the footage was captured using a non-professional handheld camcorder and therefore some is not of the best standard. Nothing has been excluded and is a true record of how each event was experienced.
Our thanks as always goes to the many people of Syria who provided us with such an unforgettable experience and our hearts continue to go out to them in these truly sad times.

Archeologist uncovers Christian ruins he says could be more than 1700 years old
(5 Aug 2012) STORYLINE
An Iraqi archaeologist claims to have uncovered Christian ruins in the holy Shiite Muslim city of Najaf that may be 1,700 years old.
Ali al-Fatli, himself a Shiite, said on-site excavations had revealed several delicately carved remains including crosses that proved that this building dated back to the Christian period.
The site lies a hundred meters (328 feet) or so from the airport serving the city of Najaf.
The church, a monastery and other surrounding ruins have emerged from the sand over the past five years with the expansion of the airport, and have excited scholars who think this may be Hira, a legendary Arab Christian centre.
Al-Fatli said the ruins were the oldest sign of Christianity in Iraq.
They lie within the airport perimeter and are therefore relatively safe from vandals and looters.
The site's stone crosses and larger artifacts have now been moved to the National Museum in Baghdad.

Despite concerns about reliability of early sources, most historians believe that Islam originated in Mecca and Medina at the start of the 7th century. A century later, the Islamic empire extended from Iberia in the west to the Indus river in the east. Polities such as those ruled by the Umayyads (in the Middle East and later in Iberia), Abbasids, Fatimids, and Mamluks were among the most influential powers in the world. The Islamic civilization gave rise to many centers of culture and science and produced notable astronomers, mathematicians, doctors and philosophers during the Golden Age of Islam. Technology flourished; there was investment in economic infrastructure, such as irrigation systems and canals; and the importance of reading the Quran produced a comparatively high level of literacy in the general populace.

Karbala's prominence in Shia traditions is the result of the Battle of Karbala, fought on the site of the modern city on Oct 09, 680 AD (10 Muharram 61 AH). Both Imam Hussein ibn Ali and his brother Abbas ibn Ali were buried by the local Banī Asad tribe at what later became known as the Mashhad Al-Hussein. The battle itself occurred as a result of Husain's refusal of Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah's demand for caliphate. The Kufan governor, Ubaydallah ibn Ziyad, sent thousands of horsemen against Imam Hussein as he traveled to Kufa. The horsemen, under 'Umar ibn Sa'd, were ordered to deny Imam Hussein and his followers water in order to force Imam Hussein to agree to give an oath of allegiance. On 9 Muharram, Imam Hussein refused and asked to be given the night to pray. On 10 Muharram, Imam Hussein ibn Ali prayed the morning prayer and led his troops into battle along with his brother Al-Abbas. All of Hussein's followers, including all of his present sons Ali al-Akbar, Ali al-Asghar (a few months old) and his nephews Qassim, Aun and Muhammad were martyred in an inhuman way.[9]
In 63 AH (682 AD), Yazid ibn Mu'awiya released the surviving members of Imam Hussein's family from prison. On their way to the Mecca, they stopped at the site of the battle. There is record of Sulayman ibn Surad going on pilgrimage to the site as early as 65 AH (685 AD). The city began as a tomb and shrine to Hussein and grew as a city in order to meet the needs of pilgrims.
The city and tombs were greatly expanded by successive Muslim rulers, but suffered repeated destruction from attacking armies. The original shrine was destroyed by the Abbasid Caliph al-Mutawakkil in 850 but was rebuilt in its present form around 979, only to be partly destroyed by fire in 1086 and rebuilt yet again.
