4K Russia | Spiridonovka street walking tour | Moscow 2019
4k walk, a documentary slow tv travel channel features a series of 4k video walks in Moscow City. This walk is along Spiridonovka street. Watch Moscow City 4k !!!
Spiridonovka Street (in 1945-1994, Alexei Tolstogo Street) - a street in the Presnensky district of Moscow. It starts from Malaya Nikitskaya street and runs north, turns northwest. Granate Lane departs to her left, Spiridonevsky and Bolshoi Patriarshiy Lanes adjoin to her right. The street crosses Ermolaevsky Lane on the right and Vspolny Lane on the left. It ends at the Garden Ring, overlooking Sadovo-Kudrinskaya Street.
In the XIV century, on the site of the modern Spiridonovka street, there was the Kozie swamp tract. This area, from where the Bubna, Kabanikh, and Chertory Creek began, was located between the current Tverskaya Street, Tversky Boulevard, Bolshaya Nikitskaya and Bolshaya Sadovaya Streets. As the name implies, locals grazed goats in this area. This was written by the scientist and historian Paolo Giovio, who visited Moscow in the 16th century: An incredible amount of wild goats and hares are found in the fields adjacent to the city.
At the beginning of the 17th century, the church of Spiridon the Wonderworker was built on the former Goat Swamp on the Goat Swamp. The saint was not chosen by chance - Spiridon of Trimyphuntus is considered the patron saint of livestock breeders and shepherds. Later, this territory was donated to Patriarch Germogen and became known as the Patriarchal Goat settlement. Subsequently, the settlement passed from one higher church hierarch to another. In the 1680s, Joachim ordered three ponds to be dug, called the Patriarchs, to drain the area and fish. In the 19th century, two ponds were filled up and the memory of them remained only in the name of Trekhprudny Pereulok, and one - the Great Patriarchal Pond - has survived to this day.
At the beginning of the XVIII century, Spiridonovka ended on a large area at the Nikitsky Gate, but by 1739 this territory was built up with residential buildings and the street acquired a modern, sinuous shape. According to the census of 1774, there were 44 buildings on Spiridonovka, 21st on each side of the street. Most of them were aisles of nearby churches and the dwellings of small public servants.
During the fire of 1812, Spiridonovka, which was built up mainly of wooden houses, completely burned down. Most of the owners of small officials were not able to restore their homes and were forced to sell vacant land to new owners. Thus Spiridonovka was rebuilt, again from a tree. On the preserved plan of Moscow in 1850, only Spiridon the Wonderworker church and three mansions are marked with stone buildings on Spiridonovka. If before the fire the street was inhabited mainly by people of low rank, then after it the social composition of the residents became more diverse. Next to small shops, taverns, workshops and one of the first photo shops in Moscow were noble estates and large houses of wealthy merchants.
After the October Revolution, the former houses of aristocrats were divided by partitions into many small rooms and converted into communal apartments. Among the new residents, they began to campaign for the demolition of the church of Spiridon of Trimyphus. The architect Pyotr Baranovsky tried to save the temple, offering to arrange a working club in it. However, his efforts were unsuccessful and in the 1930s the building, which stood on this street for more than three hundred years, was demolished. All interior decoration and icons were irretrievably lost. A few years later, on the site of the demolished church, a residential building of the Teplobeton trust was built in the then popular postconstructivism style.
In house number 4 on Spiridonovka, writer Alexei Tolstoy lived for several years. In 1945, the street was renamed in his honor. In 1957, a monument was erected to him in the park near Spiridonovka, and in 1994 the historical name Spiridonovka was returned to the street.
In 2015, Spiridonovka was reconstructed as part of the My Street program. A new tile was laid in harmony with the color of the buildings. The facades of some houses were restored, and the rest painted. Along the whole street, parking was banned and the sidewalks were almost doubled due to the decrease in the carriageway. A new system of artistic lighting was installed, and new lanterns stylized antique.

US court rules UN immune from Haiti cholera lawsuit
A US federal appeals court has upheld the United Nations (UN) diplomatic immunity from a class-action lawsuit related to the cholera outbreak in Haiti that has killed 10,000 people thus far. The ruling comes shortly after the UN admitted the roles its peacekeepers played in causing the outbreak of the deadly disease. RT correspondent Trinity Chavez has the report from New York City and speaks with the director of the Institute of Democracy and Justice in Haiti, Brian Concannon, who believes the UN “forfeited immunity by failing to uphold its end of the deal” in Haiti.
