WANHUA DISTRICT, TAIPEI - Daytime activities in Taipei
Me and Jed (my boyfriend) are on a 6-day stint in Taiwan. We arrived around lunch time at our AirBnB so we decided to do some daytime activities at the heart of Taiwan -- Taipei.
Jed can't help to eat the famous XL HotStar fried chicken the size of his head while I ate torched beef...in broad daylight. ????
My favorite part of this day would have to be touring around the Bopiliao Historical Block - a restored alley from the Qing dynasty. The Longshan temple is just on the next block so it's a win!
Enjoy!

Wanhua on the rise, Datong ranks poorest in Taipei
For many, Taipei''s Wanhua District conjures up images of ramshackle houses, criminal elements, and poverty. But according to the latest government data, Wanhua is no longer the least affluent district in the city. The dubious honor now goes to Datong District.Data show that the average household income in Wanhua increased from 1.02 million NT in 2014 to 1.21 million NT. That''s the biggest uptick seen in all of Taipei. Experts attribute the rise of Wanhua to the fast growth of its Ximen shopping area. Wanhua could also be getting a boost from the renovated Beimen and plans to build an MRT line in the neighborhood.

Mengjia Longshan Temple -The most well known temple in Taiwan
The most well known temple in Taiwan, the Mengjia Longshan Temple was built in 1738 by settlers from Fujian as a gathering place for Chinese settlers. Located in the old village part of Taipei, Wanhua District, this temple has stood the test of time and lasted through several natural disasters and wars.
During World War II, the temple was badly damaged by American bombers during the Raid on Taipei after an accusation the Japanese were hiding arms inside the temple.
Since the construction of the temple, Taipei residents have continuously renovated and improved the temple and the surrounding grounds, with the temple coming to represent the pride of Taiwanese temples and worship houses, worshipping a mixture of Buddhist, Taoist, and deities like Mazu.
Located one block to the east of the temple is the historic Bopiliao (剝皮寮), a walking street with Qing Dynasty architecture and a museum.
Longshan Temple is one of largest and oldest temples in Taiwan. Entrance is free, but donations to maintain the upkeep of the temple are accepted.

Mengjia Longshan Temple in Taipei (Video 2)
Mengjia Longshan Temple (Chinese: 艋舺龍山寺; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Báng-kah Liông-san-sī) is a temple in Wanhua District, Taipei, Taiwan. The temple was built in Taipei in 1738 by settlers from Fujian, China. It served as a place of worship and a gathering place for the Chinese settlers. The temple has been destroyed either in full or in part on numerous earthquakes and fires. During World War II, on 31 May 1945 it was hit by American bombers during the Raid on Taipei, who reported that the Japanese were hiding armaments inside. The main building and the left corridor were damaged and many precious artifacts and artworks were lost. Taipei residents have consistently rebuilt and renovated it, and did so again after the end of the Second World War a few months later. Longshan is seen as an emblematic example of Taiwanese classical architecture, with southern Chinese influences commonly seen in older buildings. Like most temples in Taiwan, the temple worships a mixture of Buddhist andTaoist deities, such as Matsu.

Remote Lanyu island off the coast of Taiwan has its own indigenous Tau people with their own language, traditions and culture.
A. Taroko National Park :
Taroko National Park is one of the nine national parks in Taiwan and was named after the Taroko Gorge, the landmark gorge of the park. The park spans Taichung Municipality, Nantou County, and Hualien County.
One of Asia’s most spectacular scenery awaits you at Taroko Gorge National Park, Taiwan’s foremost tourist draw. There’s an incredible range of landscape here:
Among the park’s unforgettable sights are the looming Chinghshui Cliff on the Pacific coast, the twisting vistas of the Tunnel of Nine Turns and the dramatic hanging bridges of Swallow Grotto.
The few buildings here make the most of the topography, particularly the Eternal Springs Shrine which hugs a lush green hillside next to its namesake springs.

Longshan-Lungshan Temple, The Most Famous in Taipei
Lungshan or Longshan Temple, constructed in 1738 and rebuilt in 1919 is another one of Taiwan's extremely interesting temples that is a mixture of Buddhist in the front hall and Taoist in the back hall. Worshippers throng this temple until late at night; venerating the many deities including Gods of business, fertility, and matchmaking (forget online dating services, pray to the Matchmaking god); lighting joss sticks, candles and throwing wooden crescents for good fortune.
Rebuilt many times, the temple has fine stone and wood carvings, reliefs, a pair of dragon columns in front of the central door cast with bronze and the only bronze columns in Taiwan. Chinese temples are so vibrant, colorful and a joyful experience.

Xichang St. Tourist Night Market & Longshan Temple - Taipei/台北
It is dinner time and I was walking south along ZhongHua Rd. (中華路/中华路) without a map until I reached Guilin Rd./桂林路 where I turned right until I saw the first sign of a night market: Xichang Street Night Market/西昌街觀光夜市. Actually I was looking for the Snake Alley/HuaXi night market. It was nice that I stumbled across the famous Longshan Temple/艋舺龍山寺 too. And afterwards I found what I was looking for - Guangzhou Street Night Market and Huaxi Night Market/華西街夜市.
