China: Cultural Heritage
Even in booming Chinese cities, modernization doesn't have to mean knocking old buildings and neighborhoods down and replacing them with gleaming high rises. In one city in southern China, preserving what's old is drawing throngs of eager tourists—and their money.

The ideas of the Chinese philosopher Confucius are retaken with greater force in modern China even when his precepts are from nearly 500 years before Christ. From Beijing our correspondent Isaura Diez with details.

Confucianism
Confucianism is an ethical and philosophical system, on occasion described as a religion, developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius (孔夫子 Kǒng Fūzǐ, or K'ung-fu-tzu, lit. Master Kong, 551–479 BCE). Confucianism originated as an ethical-sociopolitical teaching during the Spring and Autumn Period, but later developed metaphysical and cosmological elements in the Han Dynasty. Following the official abandonment of Legalism in China after the Qin Dynasty, Confucianism became the official state ideology of the Han. Nonetheless, from the Han period onwards, most Chinese emperors have used a mix of Legalism and Confucianism as their ruling doctrine. The disintegration of the Han in the second century CE opened the way for the soteriological doctrines of Buddhism and Taoism to dominate intellectual life at that time.
A Confucian revival began during the Tang dynasty. In the late Tang, Confucianism developed aspects on the model of Buddhism and Taoism and was reformulated as Neo-Confucianism. This reinvigorated form was adopted as the basis of the imperial exams and the core philosophy of the scholar official class in the Song dynasty. The abolition of the examination system in 1905 marked the end of official Confucianism. The New Culture intellectuals of the early twentieth century blamed Confucianism for China's weaknesses. They searched for new doctrines to replace Confucian teachings, some of these new ideologies include the Three Principles of the People with the establishment of the Republic of China, and then Maoism under the People's Republic of China. In the late twentieth century, some people credited Confucianism with the rise of the East Asian economy and it enjoyed a rise in popularity both in China and abroad.

Xunzi was a man of Zhao in the end of Warring States Period, also called Kuang or Qin. He was a famous ideologist, litterateur, educationist and one of the representatives of Confucianism.
At that time, the king of Qi made troubles everywhere and went his own way with strong soldiers and sturdy horses, and even attacked Song. Xunzi had to leave Qi with his students after failing to convince the King of Qi. During the late Warring States Period, the western Qin had been the most powerful state at that time. After analyzing , Xunzi thought Qin was the most potential country to unite China, so he wanted to go to Qin.
The king asked,“Ser, coming all the way, what do you think of Qin ?”
Xunzi said “There are strategic and important terrain, picked troops and sharp tools. The policy is sensible ,too.
The king asked,“And what do you think of Qin’s the new politics, Ser?”
Xunzi answered,“I don’ t think Qin is wise to implement severe criminal law all the time and don’t adopt Confucianism and benevolent government.”
The king asked again,“What will the country benefit from the Confucianism?”
Xunzi answered, “The Confucians observed the etiquette and carried out benevolence so that they can bring sensible politics by being an official, making the customs rustic as well as having no official position.
The king thought Xunzi’s view of the Confucianism was very reasonable and he respected Xunzi ,but he was insisting on governing the country according to The Legalist School theory and unwilling to adopt the Confucianism.
Although Xunzi’s policy of running the country wasn’t adopted by the king ,it was admired and adopted by the law enforcement official, Chunshen, who granted Xunzi great autonomy and gave a free development of his thoughts and mentalities on this land.
Chun Shen said, “It is honor of Chu for you coming from afar ,ser.”
Xunzi said, “I don’t have chance to achieve my self-expression if not people of Chu’s and your trust.”
Chun Shen asked, “What do you think are good policies of governance.?”
Xunzi answered,“The man of honor can’t stably stand at the superior position in turbulent society just as we can’t safely sit on a frightened horse. The man of honor have to choose sage, promoting loyalty, developing filial piety, and he also have to adopt orphans and widows, subsidizing the poverty and making people’s life happy, only on that condition ,he can maintain the superior position.”
Xunzi had achieved his idea of governing the country by morality according to the Confucianism, and he made Lanling a promised land for living. He was struggling for
promoting enlightenment and teaching apprentice at local,
and he made Lanling an academic land. H e argued that the nature of human beings was evil and human beings could conquer the nature, which was included in his book called XUNZI.

The Rites of Zhou , originally known as Officers of Zhou is actually a work on bureaucracy and organizational theory. It was renamed by Liu Xin to differentiate it from a chapter in the Book of History by the same name.Such purely administrative texts are usually referred to as Legalist, but the text's governmental model is one of co-governance, with the ruler's family holding in hand a particularly aristocratic-bureaucratic state, as opposed to the absolutist administration of Han Fei.To replace a lost work, it was included along with the Book of Rites and the Etiquette and Ceremonial – becoming one of three ancient ritual texts listed among the classics of Confucianism.

Chinese Cultural Festival, ArtCatto and Conrad Algarve
The famous Chinese philosopher Laozi once said, ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ and Chinese art has certainly come along way in the last few decades.
Chinese art is steeped in history and a tradition dating back centuries, much is based on the craft of calligraphy, which is exemplified here by the extraordinary talents of He Baijun and the brush and ink work on rice paper by Li Jian and Walasse Ting. Here we have examples of where old meets new, traditional techniques infused with a contemporary Western twist, in part through the addition of colour.
This is true about much of Chinese art, which in some ways refers back to a time before the ‘Cultural Revolution’ as well as looking to the future. In the era of Chairman Mao, the party controlled what was artistically acceptable and only supported artwork that extolled the virtues of Socialism and set about destroying much of Chinese historical culture.
Today, Chinese artists enjoy much greater freedoms. They can travel and have access to a global audience. The art market is burgeoning. Collectors are just as keen to acquire classical Chinese work and artefacts, such as Ming vases, as they are to purchase contemporary work at record prices too. It was no accident that when Saatchi opened his new gallery on the King’s Road in 2007, the inaugural exhibition was entitled – The Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art.
The appetite for Chinese and Asian art has grown apace since
then, the world’s most prestigious art fair – Basel now has a Hong Kong edition. There is a ground swell of contemporary activity, with artists grappling with change and upheaval, exploring the intersection of tradition and technology, Communism and Capitalism, and Eastern and Western styles.
ArtCatto recognises the significance of Chinese art and has curated a rich exhibition, which reflects the various aspects of this wide-ranging culture. We have the fine portraiture of Shen Ming Cun, exquisitely painted tribe children whose time honoured way of life is in stark contrast to the red-capped tourists featured in Hu Xiaogang’s work. Yu Zhongwen captures the concept of Western Romanticism with his blonde figure wistfully looking into a pond and explorations of childhood innocence. Yin Qing Feng examines in muted tones the product, waste and repetition of Western consumerism.
Chinese art is as diverse as the multitude of people who inhabit this vast country. China is constantly on the move, a dynamic country of progress yet rightly proud of its’ cultural heritage and artistic achievements. Convention and custom sit along side contemporary thought and expression.
ArtCatto, in partnership with Conrad Algarve, delivers a sample of this fascinating dichotomy, delighting the viewer with a stunning selection of artwork which is highly sought after not only in China, but now throughout the world.

Mencius answered, Why should Your Majesty have mentioned the word 'profit'? What counts is benevolence and righteousness. If your Majesty says, 'How can I profit my state?' the high officials will say, 'How can we profit ourselves?' If those above and those below strive to snatch profit one from the other, the state will be endangered. In the state of ten thousand chariots, the killer of the ruler must be the chief of a fief of a thousand chariots, and in a state of a thousand chariots, the killer of a the ruler must be the chief of a fief of a hundred chariots. To have a fief of a thousand chariots in a state of ten thousand chariots or a fief of a hundred chariots in a state of a thousand chariots, can not be regarded as a small allotment. But if profit comes first and righteousness second, the killers will not be satisfied without seizing possession of whatever they covet. No benevolent man ever neglects his parents, and no righteous man ever looks down upon his sovereign.
