Indonesian rescue workers have been searching for victims of Mount Merapi's ongoing eruptions.
They have been trying to reach the ash-covered villages on the slopes of the country's most active volcano, which lies on the outskirts of Yogyakarta in central Java.

TRAVELOGUE INDONESIA | [DAY 12, 20 DEC '16] VISITING VOLCANOES & BREATHLESS IN BOROBUDUR
Day 12, 20 December 2016.
Yogyakarta.
We finally made it to Borobudur this time round. Definitely the most exciting part of the trip. Borobudur was breathtaking not only by its view but also the amount of stairs we had to climb. Exploring each level of the temple is also equally 'breath taking' if you know what I mean. I realize I need to get fit for such travels.
After the temple, there was another mountain to climb. Gunung Merapi. In its recent eruption in 2010, it claimed 347 lives and was believed to be at the highest level of eruption in its history. It was so intense, it literally changed the characteristics of Merapi. Our guide told us that Merapi will erupt every 4 to 7 years making it the most active volcano in Indonesia. I gather in Indonesia overall, you will get a volcano that will erupt every 2 to 3 years. When we were in Jogja, our visit to Borobudur was halted because the temple was closed for cleaning, the whole city was blanketed with ashes. This was in 2014 when another mountain, Mount Kelud, erupted.
So yeah, an eruption every 3 years sounds about right.
On the whole, exploring the volcano with jeep was fun and exciting which makes it a must do if you are in Jogja. There is an element of danger as you manouver near the edges of cliffs and valleys. I have always wondered what it is like to go off road riding, one of my dream trips would be to go on a 4X4 convoy around the world so getting to taste what its like on a mountain was really sweet. Like a sneak preview that makes you want more...

INDONESIA: JAVA: MOUNT MERAPI VOLCANO
(12 Jan 2001) English/Nat
Hundreds of thousands of people on Indonesia's main island of Java have been told to prepare for possible evacuation after experts predicted that a major volcano might erupt.
For the past few days, Mount Merapi has been spewing hot rock and ash as far as one and a half miles from the crater rim.
Authorities have ordered people living around the nine-thousand and 737-foot-high mountain to be on high a-l-e-r-t and prepare to leave at short notice.
Merapi, about 250 miles east of Jakarta, is regarded as the most volatile of Indonesia's 500 volcanoes, 129 of which are still active.
It towers over the centre of Java, one of the most densely populated areas on earth with about 120 (m) million people crammed onto an island the size of Cuba.
Thousands of villagers live in hamlets strewn around the base of Merapi and on its slopes.
Twenty-five miles to its south, about one (m) million people live in the city of Yogyakarta.
In 1998, thousands were evacuated as the mountain spewed hot gas and lava, destroying small farms and damaging houses.
During a sudden, unexpected eruption in 1994, a steam cloud flattened one village, killing 60 people.
Merapi's most destructive eruption this century killed 13-hundred people in 1930.
SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian)
In this state of a-l-e-r-t, the people, especially those who live near rivers which originate from the volcano, have to be on standby because the volcano can erupt at any time.
SUPER CAPTION: Sugiyono, Chief Volcanologist of Merapi observation post
About 50 volcanologists are employed full-time to monitor Merapi.
The government has regularly offered incentives to villagers living in its shadow to resettle to safer regions of the country.
However, with the nation's economy in its worst slump in a generation, many farmers have returned, attracted by the region's fertile soil and high rainfall.

Indonesia's Mount Merapi Volcano Erupts
Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has erupted many times in the last century, killing more than 1,400. But Friday was the mountain's deadliest day since 1930, with nearly 100 lives lost. Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 235 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanoes because it sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped string of faults that lines the Pacific Ocean.

TAMAN TERSEMBUNYI DI MAGELANG eps.1
This is the beginning of our journey in Magelang. The memorable trip from Bekasi to Magelang. After that there's Fanis Jiyanti's Video to Kyai Langgeng Park.
This park is named after one of the followers of Prince Diponegoro, one of the Indonesian heroes who fought bravely against the Colonialists during Diponegoro's war (1825-1830). The late Kyai Langgeng was buried in this area and his burial can still be found here. For now and the future the Local Government of Magelang Municipality will move on to invest in new recreational facilities for all levels of the community.
