The Krämerbrücke is a medieval arch bridge in the city of Erfurt, in Thuringia in central Germany, which is lined with half timbered shops and houses on both sides of a cobblestone street. It is one of the few remaining bridges in the world that have inhabited buildings. It has been continuously inhabited for over 500 years, longer than any other bridge in Europe. The stone, pedestrian bridge, which dates from 1325, is one of the oldest secular structures in Erfurt. It spans the Breitstrom, a branch of Gera River, and connects two town squares - Benediktsplatz and Wenigemarkt.
From end to end, the Krämerbrücke is 125 m long in total. The stone bridge, which was built in 1325, is constructed from limestone and sandstone, and has six visible barrel arches ranging from 5.5 to 8 m wide. The section of the bridge supported by the six arches is 79 m long. Wooden stalls were built on top of the stone-bridge for trading goods.
The bridge originally had stone churches at both ends, where gated entrances were erected - St. Benedict's Church at the western end and St Ägidien's Church at the eastern end. St Ägidien's Church, the only one of the two that still exists, was previously a bridge chapel. The chapel was first mentioned in 1110. The archway of the church, via which the Krämerbrücke can be entered, is 3.75 m wide and 3.25 m high.
The bridge was part of the Via Regia, a medieval trade and pilgrims' road network, which linked Rome with the Baltic Sea, and Moscow with Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. The Krämerbrücke is on the route from the river Rhine to Silesia. It is also on one of the main routes of the Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James pilgrimage. Erfurt was at a major crossroads of the Via Regia and it became an important trading centre in the Middle Ages. It was a member of the Hanseatic League.
St. Benedict's Church at the west end of the bridge was sold in 1807 and later demolished, apart from its tower, in 1810, in order to build a new house. In 1895 the tower was also demolished to enable the construction of the Rathausbrücke (town hall bridge), which crosses the river parallel to the Krämerbrücke on its south side. When the Rathausbrücke was being planned, the idea of completely demolishing the Krämerbrücke was discussed. An extensive restoration of the whole bridge structure, including the arched vaults, was carried out by the East German government in 1985 and 1986.[14] Since then, vehicles up to a weight of 11 tons have been allowed to use the bridge, although it remains essentially a pedestrian bridge, with only small delivery and maintenance vehicles accessing it at restricted times.
The bridge is still an important thoroughfare for local residents, as well as being one of Erfurt's main tourist sites. It is still in much the same use as it has been for over 500 years. About 80 people live on the Krämerbrücke. The shops at street level house businesses such as artisans' workshops, specialist food outlets, antique shops, wine merchants, art galleries, cafes, etc. A bakery operates at the western end of the bridge. The upper levels of the buildings are mainly inhabited homes.
In medieval times buildings were not numbered and many people were illiterate, so house signs were sometimes hung on buildings or placed over doorways, so that the house and its occupants could be easily located. Examples of these can still be seen on the bridge, as well as original doors which may be hundreds of years old.
The Stiftung Krämerbrücke (Krämerbrücke Foundation) was founded in 1996 by the city council. It is responsible for maintaining the bridge and promoting its history. The foundation strictly controls what type of businesses can operate from the bridge to ensure that it remains in keeping with its historical roots. In the “Haus der Stiftung” (Krämerbrücke 31), there is a permanent exhibition about the history of the bridge.

The Krämerbrücke bridge (Merchant's Bridge) in the Thuringian city of Erfurt in Germany which is covered with inhabited, half timbered buildings on both sides, Which make it the longest inhabited bridge in the world. The unique bridge in Europe, The footbridge streach on Breitstrom, a branch of Gera River, connecting Benediktsplatz and Wenigemarkt. It was Originally constructed from wood in 1117 but due to annihilation by repeated six times fires in ninety years (1175-1265), it was renovate in 1293 with a stone bridge both bridgeheads stone churches, western end St. Benedicti and at the eastern end St. Aegidien. This 79 meter long arch bridge has been erected in lime and sandstone work and since then consists of six visible barrel vaults.
In 1472 after a city fire destroyed nearly half of the city and the stands on the bridge, it was reconstructed in its current form with then 62 half-timbered buildings, each with about three floors. The deepness of the buildings was extended by the wooden “Sprengwerke” next to the arch vaults. The width of the bridge finished in 1486 since then amounts to 26 m with a space of 5.5 m between the two rows of houses. In 18th century the number of houses on the bridge had been reduced to 38, due to unification and reconstruction caused by fires. The church St. Benedicti was demolished in 1810 in order to build a new house. In 1895 its tower had to give place to the newly built “Rathausbrücke” (town hall bridge), which crosses the river parallel.
Currently 32 houses on Krämer Bridge are mostly Artisans and remaining houses are municipal property. The doors at ground level are mostly antique and craft shops, while the upper levels of the building are still private residences. The houses of the bridge are the jewel of the city, which celebrates its rise to fame every year with a focus on small community called Krämerbrückenfest festival.

The medieval Merchants’ Bridge in Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany has survived in its present form since 1472, and is unique in having 62 half-timbered buildings on it, which are still inhabited. At bridge level the narrow street between the buildings is mostly antique shops and tourist shops, but above are apartments which are mostly occupied.
There is a tourist office called ‘ The House of Foundations’ at building number 31, with an exhibition on the bridge’s history and tourist information.
(The only other comparable bridge in Europe is the Ponte Vecchio in Florence (Firenze) in Italy, which is 130 years older, but in my opinion not as photogenic.) Krämerbrücke is nearly all owned now by the municipality, and has special preservation status. All the buildings were restored in a programme that was completed in 1973, since when they have been well maintained. The result is that the bridge looks much the same as it did over 500 years ago. In June each year Erfurt holds its festival based around the bridge, the Krämerbrückenfest.

Erfurt is a city in the central German state of Thuringia. Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation, was ordained in the Cathedral of St. Mary, whose origins date to the 8th century. Next to the cathedral is the Gothic Church of St. Severus. The Augustinerkloster is a monastery where Martin Luther lived as a monk. The Krämerbrücke bridge has medieval houses and shops, and stretches over the Gera River.
Erfurt, Thuringia's capital, is one of central Germany's most beguiling and significant cities. Holding its head as high as the former capital to the east, Weimar, it's a wonderfully preserved medieval city of grandiose churches, cobbled market squares, captivating museums and miraculously preserved architecture. And, as a university town, its contemporary culture is anything but backward-looking.
Straddling the Gera River, Erfurt was founded by St Boniface as a bishopric in 742, then propelled to prosperity in the Middle Ages as a major centre of the woad trade. In 1392 rich merchants founded the university, allowing students to study common law, rather than religious law. It was here that Martin Luther studied philosophy before taking holy orders. With most of its historical centre spared destruction in WWII, today's Erfurt proves that modernity and history can coexist gracefully. The city's appearance honours its medieval roots, while adding often classy, sometimes quirky, contemporary flourishes.
With over 200,000 inhabitants today, Erfurt was an important trading town during the Middle Ages, and has many beautiful old buildings and parks. Its university was one of the oldest in Germany, before it shut down early in the 19th century, but a refounded incarnation dating to just after reunification claims the old and august tradition.

Erfurt is the capital and largest city in the state of Thuringia, central Germany. It lies in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin, within the wide valley of the Gera river.
Erfurt's old town is one of the most intact medieval cities in Germany, having survived World War II with very little damage. Tourist attractions include the Krämerbrücke (Merchants' bridge), the ensemble of Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche (St Severus's Church) and Petersburg Citadel, the one of the largest and best preserved town fortress in Europe. The city's economy is based on agriculture, horticulture and microelectronics. Its central location has led to it becoming a logistics hub for Germany and central Europe. Erfurt hosts the second-largest trade fair in eastern Germany as well as the public television children’s channel KiKa.
The city is situated on the Via Regia, a medieval trade and pilgrims' road network. Modern day Erfurt is also a hub for ICE high speed trains and other German and European transport networks. Erfurt was first mentioned in 742, as Saint Boniface founded the diocese. Although the town did not belong to any of the Thuringian states politically, it quickly became the economic centre of the region. It was part of the Electorate of Mainz during the Holy Roman Empire, and later became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1802. From 1949 until 1990 Erfurt was part of the German Democratic Republic.
Notable institutions in Erfurt are the Federal Labour Court of Germany, the University of Erfurt and the Fachhochschule Erfurt.
The university was founded in 1379, making it the first university to be established in geographic area which constitutes modern day Germany. It closed in 1816 and was re-established in 1994, with the main modern campus on what was a former teachers' training college. Martin Luther was the most famous student of the institution, studying there from 1501.
