KZ1 Yacht (Used to challenge for 1988 America's cup), New Zealand Maritime Museum, Auckland, NZ
KZ 1 was a one off sailing yacht used to challenge for the 1988 America's Cup.
KZ 1 was designed by Bruce Farr and is constructed from a carbon fibre and Kevlar/Nomex sandwich.
Skippered by David Barnes and manned by a crew of 40 from the Mercury Bay Boating Club in Whitianga, New Zealand.
KZ 1 was given the nicknames of the Big Boat or Big Beauty by financial backer, Sir Michael Fay.
The unconventional challenge of Michael Fay and KZ 1 prompted American syndicate head Dennis Conner to respond with an unconventional defense. Lacking time and looking to protect the planned international event in 1992, the defenders built Stars & Stripes (US 1), a catamaran that Conner sailed to win the challenge, though most of the battle was fought in court.
KZ 1 is now on display near the National Maritime Museum in downtown Auckland.
Welcome to COLC
Coromandel Outdoor Language Centre is a small and friendly language school in the beautiful seaside town of Whitianga. activity.co.nz
We teach communicative English in a way that makes learning fun. Our teachers extend classroom learning with visits to local businesses, the museum, the information centre, the kindergarten and many other places where students use English in real communication with local people. We believe in Learning by Doing and our Activity Program takes students into new situations where they meet interesting local personalities, learn a variety of skills and try out exciting new activities. We teach English as a second Language, but you will learn much more that that when you spend time with us.
Our classes are small with a maximum of 10 students per class. The minimum age to study at COLC is 16 years and our oldest student so far, an 80 year old, loved doing activities. Students of all ages and nationalities enjoy our 'English only' rule and get to share each others' culture. We can alter your program to meet your needs.
Every Wednesday night the school runs Open Night, which is an opportunity for all students to mix in a social environment. Open night activities include Kiwi BBQs, games and movie nights, pizza parties, karaoke and students from the same country often get together to cook a national dish and prepare a feast for the other students.

Captain Cook had to travel a long way in a small ship to witness the Transit of Venus in 1769.
Dunedin people will just need to step outside tomorrow to view the only sighting visible in New Zealand this century.
Otago Museum previewed the event over the weekend, and will host a viewing tomorrow, as long as the grey clouds over the city part.

Over a six-hour period on June 5-6 2012, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) collected images in many wavelengths of one of the rarest predictable solar events: the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. These transits occur in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.

Must Do New Zealand - Driving Creek Railway - Coromandel Town
Must do New Zealand - Driving Creek Railway - Coromandel Town
‘Driving Creek Railway and Potteries' is the country’s only narrow-gauge hill railway that begun in 1975 and built mostly by hand by Barry Brickell, a rail enthusiast and potter who originally wanted all weather access to the clay and pine wood for his kilns. Today it is one of the top visitor attractions on the Coromandel Peninsula, a 'Must Do' when visiting Coromandel Town. Enjoy a delightful ride through New Zealand native bush, crossing over one of the many viaducts, tunnels and spirals before reaching the terminus at the mountain top called the 'Eyefull Tower' that offers stunning panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf.

Whangamata, New Zealand - Phantom 3 Flight
Had the first proper flight of the drone yesterday where everything came together nicely to get some real decent shots of the Whangamata South Beach & Estuary. Looks great at low tide with the exposed rock and people enjoying the water. A great example of a Kiwi summer.
Still a bit more to learn/practise around adjusting how smooth the panning and tilt functions are but pretty happy for the most part. The props in shot when flying upwind are annoying (due to the amount of tilt required to fly forward, especially in a headwind) but I can live with that.. The alternative is the $10k Inspire 1 which moves the props out upward out of the way in relation to the body, but I'm not so keen on the cost..
Still pretty cool to hear people go oooh, look at the drone or just those that look up and wave as it flys past. Interesting they have no idea who is controlling it, or where it's being controlled from -- loving the enthusiasm and the wow factor still :D
Ideas for exploring Te Horeta's nail with junior primary students
Indira Neville, Principal Advisor National Library Services to Schools, gives ideas for using the curiosity card featuring Te Horeta’s nail (curiosity card CC0002) with junior primary students. When Te Horeta Taniwha was a boy he came on board the Endeavour when it visited Mercury Bay in 1769. There he met Captain Cook who gave him one of the ship’s nails.
