Merida Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Mérida – Welcome to the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. While much of the peninsula is famed for its resorts, Mérida is the epicentre of Yucatan culture, history and pride.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Mérida:
The peaceful paradise, #Mérida, features a blend of colonial houses and Mayan ruins between which the city shares its heritage. Begin your #vacation at Plaza Grande and #explore the surrounding pastel streets filled with architectural treasures and cool parks.
Mérida’s many museums cover everything from Yucatan song to the folk arts of Mexico. The Museum of The City of Mérida charts the rich and sometimes turbulent history of Yucatan’s capital. #Visit the Yucatan’s Anthropology and History Museum and nearby, the Great Museum of the Mayan World which creates a striking contrast to Mérida’s historic streetscapes.
Mérida is surrounded by ancient Mayan cities such as Dzibilchaltun, Mayapan, Uxmal, and Chichén Itza. The Yucatan Peninsula has an incredible network of over 6000 cenotes. Some, such as the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itza, were considered portals to the afterlife.
Mérida is undoubtedly one of the coolest and most cultural cities in Mexico.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Merida, Yucatan | Mexcio | 2018
Visual postcard delivery!
This time we land in Mérida, Yucatán.
When leaving Cuba we had a flight booked back to Cancun but noticed there was a flight to Mérida just two hours later. With a bit of luck and persistence we were able to change our flight! The airport in Havana isn't exactly a technological wonder so there was a lot of waiting in line, shuffling of papers and crossing of fingers. Thankfully we had JUST the right amount of CUC left over and on hand to pay the fee to switch flights. Paying by card isn't a thing yet in Cuba
.
Mérida, the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán. We spent three nights in this super-charming, colonial city. Delicious food, friendly locals, and a really cool place to visit for a day or two.
We lucked out and happened to be there on a festival weekend so the streets were alive with dancers. But we hear there are so many things to do in Merida all year round that chances are you'll also luck out and be able to see some kind of cool festival for yourself on any given month.
The Plaza Grande was a great central spot where many Meridians and tourists alike congregate to relax day and night. At night it is so beautifully lit up, it feels magical.
Palacio Municipal, Merida, the long, shaded balcony of the municipal building was a great place to capture a nice panoramic view of Merida’s Plaza Grande and chill out in the shade and enjoy the sound of the birds. It is such a beautiful balcony.
The Lucas de Galvez market is something that should be experienced! We discovered the most delicious tortas ever in that market. So good that we went back for breakfast again and again. The name of the place was, Taqueria, “El Amanecer”.

Merida: The centre for art and tourism in Mexico
Merida a town in Mexico known for its historical remains and architecture. Merida gives a glimpse of both Mayan as well as the Latin- American culture and that's what makes the city unique and an instant hit amongst the travellers.
Let's Explore Mérida Mexico
Let's explore the world through Google Street View.
Today we are visiting Mérida Mexico on the Yucatán Peninsula. What an impressive city this is! Very large with a grid that's spread out so wide. Some seriously nice homes too on the outskirts as well as historic homes that must have been amazing mansions at one point. Great history, tons and tons of shopping and eating, so much to explore! Would love to spend a few days walking all around this old city.
Here you can check out where we have been on Google Maps.
Thanks to Google for Street View.

MERIDA, YUCATAN - Why are expats flocking here?!?
Is it because Merida claims to be the safest city in Mexico or do people love this Mexican city for other reasons?
►We offer fun perks on Patreon!
We spent a little over a week in Merida, Yucatan. During that time, we only made one Mexico travel video because Maddie was recovering from being sick and, if we're being honest, we really weren't vibing with the city. So as we asked in the title, why are expats flocking to Merida, Mexico? We aren't totally sure what it is that draws people here, except perhaps that it's touted as the safest city in Mexico across social media and online groups.
While it was nearly perfect weather during the time we visited Mérida, it is incredibly hot and humid most of the year. We also noticed quite a bit of trash throughout the city and the pollution was horrid. On the bright side, the Yucatan food we tried throughout the city was absolutely amazing! Expats in Mexico could fall for this city for that reason alone and we'd totally understand why!
After talking with more Mexico expats about living in Mexico, we quickly learned that Merida is a place that you either LOVE or HATE. During our time in the city, we really couldn't figure out why that is though. If you've been there, do you know? Or perhaps you can take a guess after watching today's travel Mexico video?
OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MERIDA, MEXICO
* Chaya Maya - We went here SO many times. This Merida restaurant has reasonable prices and authentic Yucatan food that will have you craving more. It can get pretty busy, so you might find yourself waiting for a table.
* Cafe Riqueza - This coffee shop is close to centro and serves delicious drinks at affordable prices compared to other cafes in town.
* Ave del Paraíso - We loved the Thai food here! It was a tad spicy for us, but still so delicious.
* El Barrio - It's a bit pricy considering the portions, but we thought the food was tasty and it's worth a visit if you're in Merida.
* Maíz, Canela, y Cilantro - This restaurant is a hidden gem in Merida. It's a modest family-run place with great coffee and food made with love. The Jamaica agua fresca was super refreshing!

Merida - First Impressions!
Would we love it or leave it? FIND OUT! :P
The moment we said we were moving to Mexico, specifically the Yucatan Peninsula, we were inundated with messages that we should move to Merida. Known for its safety, delicious regional food, and history. It has a growing expat community and many proud residents.
Join us as we explore Paseo de Montejo and get a feeling for the city.
About Us: We're a couple from the USA that was tired of spending our days in windowless offices feeling like we weren't living life to the fullest. We went to visit Mexico a couple of times and decided we loved the weather, the people, the culture, and the relative affordability. So we decided to make it our home. We sold most of our belongings, our 3-bedroom house in Denver, and packed up our bags for Mexico. Thanks for following our journey as we navigate through our new country we call home!
