Merimbula is a coastal town in southern New South Wales, Australia. Its beaches include Merimbula Main Beach, with surf breaks over a sandbank, and Short Point, a popular whale-watching spot. Merimbula Boardwalk hugs the shores of Merimbula Lake. Northwest of the centre, Potoroo Palace is a wildlife sanctuary with wombats, echidnas and kangaroos. To the northeast, Bournda National Park has coastal trails.

The Sapphire Coast, also known as the Bega Valley, is the most southerly coastal region in New South Wales, from Wallaga Lake in the north to the Nadgee Nature Reserve to the south on the New South Wales border with Victoria.
The Bega Valley is home to the town of Bega, famous in Australia and overseas for Bega Cheese. There is also the craft village of Cobargo, well known as a day trip destination.
The Sapphire Coast is popular for its quiet and friendly towns and coastal villages, cultural tours with local aboriginals, and great fishing.

In the Victorian September school holidays FunSearch went on a roadtrip adventure from Melbourne to the stunning Sapphire Coast (far south coast of NSW). It’s an absolutely beautiful part of Australia, teeming with Australian wildlife including echidnas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, goannas, seals, turtles, dolphins - and lots of friendly whales! the landscape in which the animals live, is its own natural attraction

A dugong which was rescued from Merimbula Lake in a joint operation between marine experts from Sea World, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Sea World.
Sharks & Rays at Merimbula Wharf
Have you ever seen a Grey Nurse Shark at Merimbula Wharf?
I hadn't dived Merimbula Wharf for 3 years and Michael at the Divers Lodge said that divers had seen two Grey Nurse Sharks where the rocky reef meets the sand line at 15 metres.
I was diving by myself, so I just headed out the right side of the Wharf to a favourite area where there are huge boulders, where I often see big schools of fish, woebegone sharks in the holes, cuttlefish, and smaller cat sharks... but I saw a big school of fish which flickered in the sunlight, and behind them was a huge grey nurse.
This was the first time I have ever seen a grey nurse at Merimbula Wharf, and in only 5 metres of water.
I was also fortunate to see a Port Jackson shark with an egg case in its mouth. I'm guessing the shark was seeking a suitable crevice in the rocks to insert the egg in to.
Simply awesome.
