Places to see in ( Baden Baden - Germany ) Merkur Mountain
The Merkur or Großer Staufenberg is a mountain, 668.3 m above sea level, in the Northern Black Forest, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is the Hausberg of Baden-Baden and located between the spa town and the town of Gernsbach.
The mountain is named after the Ancient Roman god of trade and commerce, Mercury, to whom a Roman votive stone on the summit is dedicated. The Merkurstein has been recorded since the 16th century. Today, there is a cast of the original votive stone on the summit plateau; its prototype is in the Baden-Baden Municipal Museum collection. The original name of the free-standing conical mountain was the Großer Staufenberg, a reference to the shape of a turned drinking mug known as a Stauf.
The summit of the Merkur is only accessible on foot, by bicycle or on the Merkur Funicular Railway (the Merkurbergbahn) from Baden-Baden. The funicular was built in 1913, but closed in 1967 for technical reasons. It re-opened in 1979. It is 1,200 metres long, one of the longest railways of its type in Germany, and climbs gradients of up to 54%. There are good views of Baden-Baden during the ascent.
At the top station is a restaurant. Other attractions at the summit include a sunbathing lawn, a barbecue area and a play park with giant slide. Aimed at spa guests, but usable by anyone, are the so-called terrain spa walks (Terrainkurwege) of different lengths and gradients. One of these paths leads to the wildlife park at the foot of the mountain where there are red deer, fallow deer and mounflon. About half-way up the Merkur on the Baden-Baden side is the premium footpath, the Panorama Way (Panoramaweg). The summit of the Merkur is a waystop on two other premium footpaths: the Gernsbacher Runde and Murgleiter.
An observation and radio tower stands on the highest point of the Merkur at 48°45′52″N 8°16′50″E. It was built in 1837 and was raised in height when the funicular was built. Since the 1950s it has also acted as a radio broadcast transmitter. A more recent reinforced concrete annex supports an antenna mast made of steel, reaching a total height of 63 metres.
The mountain has an all-round view, not just over the bowl of Baden-Baden, the highest peaks of the Northern Black Forest and the Murg valley with the towns of Gaggenau and Gernsbach, but also of the Upper Rhine Plain, the Vosges, the Haardt and the Odenwald. In the field of view are the ruins of Hohenbaden Castle, the Battert rocks, the ruins of Alt Eberstein, the Fremersberg, the Yburg, the Badener Höhe and the Hornisgrinde as well as the cities of Karlsruhe and Strasbourg.

The Merkur Funicular Railway is a metre gauge funicular railway in the town of Baden-Baden in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The line ascends the town's Hausberg, the Merkur, atop which is the Merkur Tower. The line opened in 1913 and closed in 1967.
The longest funicular railway in Germany is one of the attractions in Baden-Baden, and a popular destination for excursions. Climbing the highest point in Baden-Baden sounds rather strenuous. It need not be, however. The summit of the 2,191 foot Merkur Mountain can be easily reached with Europe’s steepest, and most technically advanced, funicular railway. In little over 5 minutes, and after negotiating inclines of between 23% and 54%, and a difference in altitude of 1,214 feet, you will have reached your target.
It is a safe, environmentally friendly and convenient mode of transport used by between 130,000 and 160,000 walkers, day-trippers, hikers and nature lovers every year to get to the top of the Merkur Mountain in Baden-Baden in just a few minutes. The Merkur Funicular Railway operates to and from the summit between the hours of 10am and 10pm. The railway’s base station can be easily reached from the town center by taking either the 204 or 205 bus. If you intend to use the bus service, we would recommend you buying a combination ticket, which you can purchase from the bus driver. When the doors of the Merkur Mountain Railway close and the train starts moving, almost silently, you leave all the noise, stress and hustle and bustle of everyday life behind in the valley.
If you don't fancy an exciting trip on the Merkur Mountain Railway, you can also go up along a wonderful footpath. Once you arrive, there is a free lift up the Merkur Tower, to bring visitors up to the 23-meter viewing platform, so they reach a total height of 700m. There you can enjoy a fascinating panorama of the Baden-Baden basin, the highest mountains in the north of the Black Forest and the Murgtal valley, and you can even see as far as the Upper Rhine Plain, to Vogesen, Haardt and Odenwald. You have a view of the Hohengaden and Alt-Eberstein ruins, mountains including the Battertfelsen, the Fremserberg, the Yburg, the Badener Höhe and the Hornisgrinde, and the cities of Karlsruhe and Strasbourg.
There is a pleasant restaurant at the summit, the Merkurstüble, where you can enjoy a tasty bite to eat. There are signposted footpaths for walking and hiking, viewing points, wildlife reserves and much more for interesting excursions and amazing views.
At the top of the Merkur Mountain there is also a barbecue station, an area of grass for sunbathing and a playground with a giant slide. Another highlight for visitors to the Merkur mountain is the chance to take a relaxed tandem flight on a paraglider, to get a bird's eye view of Baden-Baden and the surrounding area.

Nestled at the foot of the Black Forest in South Germany, Baden-Baden is a chic destination for those who fancy a dip in its famous salt- and radon-rich thermal hot springs. The town has been a popular destination for so long that it's starting to show its age, but not to worry. It's still very classy, picturesque and well-maintained. (The Dame Julie Andrews of German spa towns, if you will.) Sporty types will find an abundance of opportunities to enjoy golf, tennis, horseback riding and skiing nearby in winter.
Baden-Baden is a spa town in southwestern Germany’s Black Forest, near the border with France. Its thermal baths led to fame as a fashionable 19th-century resort. Alongside the Oos River, park-lined Lichtentaler Allee is the town’s central promenade. The Kurhaus complex (1824) contains the elegant, Versailles-inspired Spielbank (casino). Its Trinkhalle has a loggia decorated with frescoes and a mineral-water fountain.

Walk along the river Oos or in the hills and forests around the town. The tourist office at the Trinkhalle can sell you a booklet of walks based on bus routes. The walking is generally easy, but for maximum reward for minimum effort, take bus 204/205 to the Merkur Bergbahn funicular railway, ride up to the cafe at the top, and walk back via the old castle (Altes Schloss).

Baden-Baden's curative waters and air of old-world luxury have attracted royals, the rich and celebrities over the years – Barack Obama and Bismarck, Queen Victoria and Victoria Beckham included. This Black Forest town boasts grand colonnaded buildings and whimsically turreted art nouveau villas spread across the hillsides and framed by forested mountains.
The bon vivant spirit of France, just across the border, is tangible in the town’s open-air cafes, chic boutiques and pristine gardens fringing the Oos River. And with its temple-like thermal baths – which put the Baden (bathe) in Baden – and palatial casino, the allure of this grand dame of German spa towns is as timeless as it is enduring.
Baden-Baden (meaning The Baths in Baden) is a spa town built on thermal springs at the edge of the Black Forest in Baden Württemberg, south west Germany. Don't be put off by its reputation as a hang-out for the rich. This picturesque town is beautifully situated in a wooded valley, and you can enjoy yourself here without spending or gambling a fortune.

Merkur mountain - Baden-Baden
Baden-Baden Funicular (Mt. Merkur)
This is the run from the top to the bottom of the Merkur-Bergbahn in Baden Baden Germany. This is a two track funicular railway with a maximum grade of 54%!!! You can see the cable tied to the other car on the left side of center portion of the track. Notice how the cable disappears after the other car passes (at the half way point). This is a popular paragliding mountain in Baden - Wurttemberg. This video was taken October 2011.
Some stats for this guy:
1.2 km - long run
370 m - rise from base to the top of the mountain
1260 m - rope length
180 hp - all it takes to keep the cars moving
30 minutes - How long it took us to figure out you had to hit the departure button (Abfahrt) to get it to go...
In our defense the only signs they had in English were the ones saying how many thousands or Euro's we would be fined if we did anything wrong.
