Bray Night and Day Exhibition - Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, BeautifulBray.com
BeautifulBray.com
Bray, Night and Day is an exhibition of twenty two interactive automaton donation boxes inspired by all the various facets of Bray and designed especially for Mermaid by second year IADT students. The students interpreted their site visit to Bray in their final automatons presented here. Themes include the aquatic life, Bray Head, seaside amusements, Sea Life Aquarium and of course...Mermaid Arts Centre. The IADT Model Making, Design and Digital Effects BA course is the only one of its kind in Ireland. As well as a chance to see these wonderful automatons, visitors will get an insight into the world of the model-maker. The exhibition includes an installation of a working model makers studio featuring work by past and present IADT students and a short DVD of digital model making techniques.
Larger automatons by Chris McLoughlin, Ellen Coughlan and Joanne Bolger also feature.
During the exhibition, three of the best donation boxes will be chosen for permanent installation at Mermaid - and then the real competition will begin. Whichever donation box raises the most funds for Mermaid Arts Centre over a 6 month period will be ordained the winner.
Automatons are mechanical art objects which generally communicate a simple narrative or concept. Historically and generally the makers of these automatons would have began life as watchmakers who excelled in their mechanical understanding of clockwork. To show off their technical skills they created very complex machines, choosing often to recreate 'real life' actions of a person in an object. This mechanical enquiry was a forerunner to the sophisticated electronic machinery, computers and robots all around us today. There has always been an artistic element to this genre of work. In modern times automatons have moved away from being more focused on mechanical wizardry and instead are intended to be thought provoking, visually exciting objects. The designer-maker needs to have both aesthetic and mechanical understanding to construct one of these objects. The mechanics and character are carefully constructed to scale, props and the sets that they inhabit to match. Ger Clancy, Lecturer, IADT.

Friday 18th & Saturday 19th Nov 2016 Backstage Theatre, Longford
If you could start it all again what changes would you make?
Utopia brings together an ensemble of performers from St Christopher’s Services, Longford and The Visual Theatre Programme in Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray to devise a theatre production under the direction of Gemma Gallagher of Shadowbox Theatre Company who create work that challenges expectations and perceptions about disability.
Gemma, who has worked with Cirque du Soleil and Punchdrunk, will guide this ensemble of actors to create a piece of theatre from the heart of the participants own reflections and experiences at all times finding imaginative and engaging ways of sharing their story and challenging preconceptions of what it is to be ‘other’.
This theatre production will be performed in both Longford and Bray, as part of a collaboration between Backstage and Mermaid.
This project is supported by the Arts Council, Co Longford Arts Office and the Ireland Funds.
