Civil War Trail - Merrehope
For more information:
One of the most famous landmarks in Meridian is Merrehope. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the home dates back to 1858, when one of Meridian's first settlers, Richard McLemore, gave his daughter Juriah and her husband, W.H. Jackson, 160 acres as a wedding gift. Merrehope wasn't always a grand mansion. Originally it was a small Greek Revival cottage. The antebellum section of the house is located in the back of the mansion.

Weidmann's Restaurant
Weidmann's Restaurant. This establishment originally opened in 1870 as a fruit and vegetable stand. It is located in Meridian, MS...Mississippi's oldest restaurant. The restaurant was sold outside the founding family to a group of investors in around 2001. The new owners gutted the restaurant and removed all of its amazing nostalgia and renovated it into a modern, upscale restaurant. The new theme was not very popular, so a new operator took over the restaurant and tried to bring back as much of the old Weidmann's as possible, including the neon sign and some of the old pictures on the wall. The video contains a shot of the old Weidmann's, taken in 1996, as well as a shot of the old menu, right before the current menu is shown. Music Credit: Kevin MacLeod, Incompetech.com. Track: Autumn Day.

Civil War Trail - Railroads & the War
For more information:
Railroads were the heart of Meridian. Although it was a relatively small town at the time of the Civil War, it was the site of a major rail junction that had become important to the Confederacy. The depot, arsenal, stockade, military hospitals and state offices that sprang up around the tracks made Meridian a tempting target for General Sherman. His plan was to cut off this crucial supply line and, if conditions were favorable, continue on to Selma and Mobile, Alabama.
Mississippi Pines Region by Erik Hastings
Erik Hastings tours Meridian, Philadelphia, and Columbus. Historic homes, picturesque towns, and scenic byways -- like Natchez Trace -- provide a gateway to a different time. Tennessee Williams was born here. Jimmie Rodgers is memorialized here. And the Choctaw Indians have built a casino resort providing modern day entertainment that may distract you from the native crafts, dance and wares that reveal their culture.

SUMMARY
=======
The Meridian race riot of 1871 was a race riot in Meridian, Mississippi in March 1871. It followed the arrest of freedmen accused of inciting riot in a downtown fire, and blacks' organizing for self-defense. Although the local Ku Klux Klan (KKK) chapter had attacked freedmen since the end of the Civil War, generally without punishment, the first local arrest under the 1870 act to suppress the Klan was of a freedman. This angered the black community. During the trial of black leaders, the presiding judge was shot in the courtroom, and a gunfight erupted that killed several people. In the ensuing mob violence, whites killed as many as 30 blacks over the next few days. Whites drove the Republican mayor from office, and no person was charged or tried in the freedmen's deaths.
The Meridian riot was related to widespread postwar violence by whites to drive Reconstruction Republicans from office and restore white supremacy. Although the Enforcement Acts helped suppress the Klan at this time, the Meridian riot marked a turning point in Mississippi violence. By 1875 other white paramilitary groups arose; the Red Shirts suppressed black voting by intimidation, and their efforts led to a Democratic Party victory in state elections. Within two years a national political compromise was reached, and the federal government withdrew its military forces from the South in 1877.
