Bike Cam: Merri Creek Trail Bypass (Clifton Hill) | Cycling Melbourne
A cycle along the Merri Creek Trail bypass in Clifton Hill and looping back along the old path that forms part of the Capital City Trail.
The bypass allows greater accessible access to the pedestrian and bicycle trail network and promotes a more utilitarian approach to bicycling. It is unfortunate that the bypass is not signposted. I'm sure many are unsure of its existence or where it goes.
Recorded March 2019.

Toasty Melbourne Summer rides - Merri Creek Trail 2- Southbound 21km / 26kph
This beautiful tracks deserves a second review. I've included some information at the beginning to describe the weather during the ride. In this case it was a rather toasty and windy afternoon with top temperatures hitting 37/38 degrees. Doing the track from North to South offers quite a different perspective. Starting at Sydney Road i follow the Ring Road Trail for a few kilometres and then turn south to follow the Merri Creek trail . Just before Dights Falls I turn left to do the final sequence along the Main Yarra Trail and finish at Fairfield Park (where my journey continues along the MYT and the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail to Ringwood.

Mernda Line Wanderings, Clifton Hill/Jolimont Group, Melbourne, VIC
Filmed on the afternoon of Saturday, December 28, 2019, this video covers the run from Mernda station, to Clifton Hill station. Please refer to (a) Hurstbridge Line Wanderings for Hurstbridge - Clifton Hill, and/or (b) to Clifton Hill Group Wanderings, for Clifton Hill - Flinders Street Station.
With a departure from Mernfa at 3:44 pm, our typical Station stops/starts sees stops at Hawkstowe, then Middle Gorge, near the site of the old, 1959 closed South Morang station, followed by the 2012 - opened, present day South Morang station.
Further stops are Epping, the then terminus of the line from the early 1960s, after the Thomastown - Whittlesea section closed in 1959. Today's Epping opened in 2012.
Next is Lalor, then Thomastown, once an interchange between suburban electric, and Whittlesea DMU, trains, followed by Keon Park, once the limit of double track from the city.
After this, there's Ruthven, the Reservoir, which here is the 2019 - opened SkyRail station above the once notorious High Street level crossing. Then we reach Regent, Preston, Bell, both set for SkyRail Works in future, Thornbury, Croxton, Northcote, Merri, Rushall, before arriving at Clifton Hill station platform 1 at 4:25 pm.
I alight the train, a 6 - car, Xtrapolis suburban electric train, and we see it head to the city. Additional vision includes level crossings, the Epping Train Depot, the new Reservoir SkyRail above the former level crossing, the Preston tram depot, and passing trains.

Overhead Inspection Train to Hurstbridge, Upfield & South Morang 3/3/13
IEV102 is a specially modified carriage fitted with equipment to measure the height and horizontal displacement of the overhead contact wire. It patrols Melbourne's electrified suburban network on a regular basis, generally propelled between two of Metro's T class locos.
On this occasion we see the IEV visiting Hurstbridge, Upfield and South Morang on a Sunday morning, propelled by T377 and T369. IEV102 has led a very unusual and varied life, entering service in the 1950's as a 'Harris' EMU trailer car, 679T. When the Harris sets were withdrawn in the 1980's this car was one of four converted to an 'MTH' railmotor trailer (differing from a normal H car in that the MTH's were fitted with under-flood generators), and was towed behind DRC and DERM railmotors. The MTH cars were fitted with multiple-unit through-cabling compatible with the DRC's, and they ran briefly on the Stony Point line in DRC-MTH-MTH-DRC sets. After DRC's were withdrawn the MTH cars continued to be used on the Stony Point line behind diesel locomotives until 2008, when they were withdrawn and entered storage at Newport Workshops. At the end of 2011, Metro sent MTH102 to Bendigo to be converted into it's current configuration, and it was delivered back to Melbourne in December as IEV102. The car has a pantograph at either end with markings to show the position of the wire, and a camera films the pantograph from an observation dome fitted in the middle. The MU through-cabling has been modified to the standard type for diesel-electric locomotives, so only one crew is required for push-pull operation.
Locations shown in this video are:
00:00 - Climbing the 1 in 40 grade to Montmorency.
00:42 - Approaching Hurstbridge.
01:12 - Shortly after departing Hurstbridge at Mary Place.
01:46 - A Down empty X'trapolis arrives into Diamond Creek, going into the loop to cross the special, which is then seen departing.
02:54 - Rounding the curve into Westgarth.
03:31 - Crossing the Park Street level crossing near Jewell, on the Upfield line. This is one of many crossings on the Upfield line to feature preserved wooden crossing gates and a Gate Keeper's hut. Note that when the booms go up a waiting car drives through the red light for the pedestrian crossing!
04:10 - Rolling down grade through Royal Park.
04:34 climbing the 1 in 50 grade between Merri and Northcote on the way to South Morang.
