For - Merry Maidens stone circle near Penzance, Cornwall
Cornwall circular coastal walk past the Merry Maidens and Lamorna.
This walk is approximately 6 miles and takes 3.5 hours as it has a moderate amount of hills and rocky paths particularly on the coastal path.
This circular walk starts at the Merry Maidens parking spot, After visiting the Merry Maidens you head up the B3315 away from the Maidens towards Porthcurno. Take the left turn 100m past Boskenna Cross and pass St Loy to reach the coastal path. (You can't take any of the prior paths you pass to access the coastal path as the farm lanes are private). At the coastal path turn left and stay on it to Lamorna Cove. At Lamorna take the road up the valley taking the footpath past New Town before you reach the top. This leads you back to the Merry Maidens.
I used OS map Explorer 102.

Caves at Pendower Cove which is where i pitched my tent last night. I headed for Porthgwarra along the coast. At Porthgwarra there is a little cafe that sells fantastic pasties. I stopped at the cafe there for two pasties. I had walk thought the tunnel there to a small cove. Its a really nice place to visit even if your not doing the coast path. I then carried on the coast path past Saint Levan's Well. Next port of call was Porthcurno where i walked past the famous Minack Theatre. Had look at the famous cable hut at Porthcurno. I then headed back up the coast path onto Penberth this is such a nice place to visit again even your not walking the coast path this is worth a visit. Hard place to leave on a lovely day as i had but i had to make a move so was back to the coast path until i saw a sign for a campsite shop at Treverven Touring Caravan & Camping Site. From this point i made the choice to leave the coast path and head for the campsite shop. The shop was closed however the campsite looked great but i was out of time so i could not stay the night there. There was a water tap so filled my bottles up with water. It was then a walk along a road past two ancient crosses Boskenna Crosses Boskenna Cross. Not far way along the road is Tregiffian Barrow and The Merry Maidens stone circle. Had a rest and then i headed back to the coast path after a long walk where there was a right of way on the map but the land owner thinks otherwise so was long walk back and down another track and onto Lamorna Wild camping.
Porthgwarra - At the foot of the cove's slipway is a tunnel dug by tin miners from St Just to give farmers horse-and-cart access to the beach to collect seaweed to use as a fertiliser.
Saint Levan's Well - Water from the well here is still used for baptisms in the nearby Parish Church. it was said that drinking the water from the well would cure toothache and eye diseases. There was also a chapel in the area, sometimes cited as the oldest Christian chapel in Cornwall.
Porthcurno - international submarine communications cable station. In the late nineteenth century, the remote beach became internationally famous as the British termination of early submarine telegraph cables, the first of which was landed in 1870, part of an early international link stretching all the way from the UK to India, which was then a British colony
Penberth - one of the last remaining traditional fishing coves in Cornwall, with a handful of local fishermen still making their living from fishing for mackerel, lobster and crab. There is a Restored capstan winch.
Boskenna cross is a Cornish cross which stands where three roads meet south-east of St Buryan churchtown. It was found buried in a hedge at this road junction in 1869. Only the carved upper part of the cross is ancient.
Tregiffian Barrow - is a Neolithic or early Bronze age chambered tomb. It is a rare form of a passage grave, known as an Entrance grave. The large stone grave, half of which was covered by a road in 1846.
The Merry Maidens - Is a late neolithic stone circle. The circle, which is thought to be complete, comprises nineteen granite megaliths. In earlier times there was another stone circle located 200 metres away, but this had been destroyed by the end of the 19th century. it is thought that there were originally 18 standing stones. In the mid-19th century new stones were added in an attempt at reconstruction, but not in the correct position or number. In addition, some of the old stones were moved, giving the appearance that the stone circle has today.
Lamorna - The first record of tin streaming is in the 1380s when Alan Hoskyn was killed (murder was not proven) during a dispute with Trewoofe, after the stream was diverted. Mounds along the stream are evidence of past activity.
