Mersea island roman barrow and alresford church (TRAILER)
Mersea island roman barrow..
Bones discovered in a Roman burial mound above the access road to the island were sent off to be analysed by experts by Mersea Island Museum.
The results have revealed that the bones belonged to an “active man” who suffered from a rare bone disorder.
Judith Kirkby, of Mersea Island Museum, said: “Apparently this was a strong, active man, probably a walker, aged between 35 and 45, who had suffered from a rare bone disorder.
At Barrow Hill on Mersea Island, Essex stands this Romano-British barrow. Take the B1025 fromColchester, cross the Strood at low tide and the conspicuous mound can be found at TM 021149 on the East Mersea Road almost opposite Dawes Lane. Excavated in 1912, the barrow is 23 ft high and 110 ft around. There is an entance protected by an iron gate and a passage leading to a tiny chamber which contained cremated remains in a glass vessel. Local legend tells that the ghosts of two Viking brothers are doomed to fight each night for the love of the same woman. There is also a rare Roman wheel tomb in a private garden to the east of West Mersea church. It has a circular wall 65ft in diameter with internal walls radiating like spokes from a central chamber.
Alresford church....
St. Peter’s church in Alresford, Essex was built by Anfred de Staunton around 1300. It is situated about a mile away from the Alresford town. Unfortunately the church was destroyed by a fire in 1971 and was beyond repair. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. As the church was given Grad II listed status in 1966 the ruins still remain, a church to replace it was built in Alresford town a few years later.
A bit of a story behind this old church in the village I live, St.Peter's church Alresford has for years been associated with black magic, with lots of reports of the grounds being used for rituals.
It suspiciously burnt down on Halloween night 1971, just recently there has been a lot of activity been reported in the church grounds at night..

Ralph Merry Mersea Island 'Disappearing Mud'
Holding Back the Tide is a Heritage Lottery funded project coordinated by CoastNet.
The initiative is collecting stories, pictures and artefacts from East Anglian communities to tell the story of coastal change that has occurred in the region over the last 50 years or more. The project will culminate in a touring exhibition of coastal living history for regional and local museums as well as on display at other venues as requested by participants.
Central to the project is a vision for increased understanding and appreciation of the changes to the cultural and natural heritage of this part of the British coast and CoastNet wants it to be a vehicle for community cultural development, education and sustainable living.

Pie & Mash Ride - 15th Sept 2012 - London
Ride out to Cookes pie and mash shop (in Quadraphenia) in Shepherds Bush, London. We met at The Bar Italia in Soho then rode over the St Katherine Dock to meet the A12 SC from Essex. The route took us through the bottom of The City then along the Embankment through Chelsea, Earls Court and into Goldhawk Road, Shepherds Bush. Any old Mods or enthusiasts will recognise the various clips in Quad all shot around Shepherds Bush and Goldhawk Road. I also wanted to recreate The Alley Scene in Brighton but my Mrs wouldn't have it!?!?!?!? Big thanks to Bar Italia SC, A12 SC and Cookes Pie and Mash!

Northey Island
Island 79 of our 100 Island adventure. Please note you need to phone the national trust ranger the day before to get access to the Island. Causeway was clear 5 hours before high tide when we went over. Not too much to see, one bird hide, a few benches, walk up the track, round the back of the houses and back along the sea wall.
Don't use the postcode in the national trust book, that is the nearby farm. Park at the Promenade car park in Maldon (quite expensive) and walk past the re-cycling centre and the Yacht club members only sign to the sea wall where there is a signpost. Note there are a small number of free parking spaces outside the re-cycling centre.
