DEVONPORT (Mersey Bluff Lighthouse, Spirit of Tasmania's home)
How to get to Tasmania if driving from Melbourne?
Well, Devonport is on the north coast, where the Mersey River meets the Bass Strait. It is Tasmania’s third-largest city. It’s also the arrival and departure point and the home of the Spirit of Tasmania. Spirit of Tasmania is a fast ropax ferry owned by TT-Line Pty. Ltd., built-in 1998 and operated on the route between Melbourne and Devonport.
Devonport is a great place to take a stroll or stay after the sea voyage from Melbourne. The area has riverside parkland leading to protected swimming beaches and a short walk to Mersey Bluff Lighthouse.
You can explore Devonport’s coastline by walking along the coastal trail to the Bluff and nearby aboriginal rock carvings.
Devonport also has a rich maritime history and at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre. The Bass Strait Maritime Centre has exhibits about early explorers, shipwrecks and steamers. You can even take the Helm of the SS Woniora in a simulated experience and bring a 1910 liner into the Mersey River or through the heads of Port Phillip Bay.
The city is also close to some of Tasmania’s best heritage towns and national parks.
Devonport is a 1-hr drive (98 km) west of Launceston and a 3hrs drive to Hobart, and we posted on our website 'how much' driving costs in Tasmania.
