Ellesmere Port to Liverpool via the Manchester Ship Canal and The River Mersey
On July 7th 2013, a group of 10 boats all with crew's of at least 2, completed one of the most wonderful cruises on the British canal/river system. Organised by canal veteran and IWA enthusiast Mike Carter. Mike has organised many of these trips in the past and has enormous experience, navigating along the commercial shipping lanes of The Manchester Ship Canal and across the sometimes treacherous tidal River Mersey. Without Mike's knowledge and skill, this trip would have been almost impossible for a single boat.

A Cruise on the Manchester Ship Canal
The cruise, which began at the Seacombe Ferry terminal, was supposed to travel the whole 35 miles of the Ship Canal, but due to mechanical problems, terminated at Barton Lock. The cruise was aboard the ferry 'Royal Iris of the Mersey'. Due to the hot weather, or so we were told, the swing bridge at Chester Road, Warrington, failed to open. After nearly an hour, and apparently, buckets of cold water, the bridge finally opened. When we got to Barton Lock, the same thing happened again. This time, the Barton Road Swing bridge failed to open, and this time it failed to move at all. So it was a u-turn in the canal, and because there is no road access at Barton Lock, it was back to Irwell Lock were the cruise ended. Pity we didn't make it to Salford Quays, but it was a nice cruise. Enjoy. By the way, the female voice you hear on some of the clips, is a Blue badge guide. She certainly knows her stuff, but I had to stop listening after a short while.
