Lawrence Of Arabia In Wales! Merthyr Mawr Dunes
The classic David Lean film Lawrence of Arabia was filmed in Morocco. Jordan, Spain and yes, in Wales! In Merthyr Mawr sand dunes near Bridgend South #Wales to be precise.
The dunes were used as a film location and did double as the Arabian Desert in a few of the scenes.
???? More Welsh film locations, the entrance to the Batcave from Batman was also filmed in South Wales -
Lawrence of Arabia starred Peter O’ Toole in the title role. It also featured Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Anthony Quayle, Jack Hawkins, Claude Rains and Omar Sharif. It was filmed in 1962 and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won 7 including. Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography.
As well as Lawrence of Arabia, in recent years the sand dunes have been used as a film location in the sci-fi TV programs Torchwood and Doctor Who. #FilmLocations
The Merthyr Mawr dunes are also designated as an SSSI (site of special scientific interest) because of its wealth of plants and insect life. However, since the filming of Lawrence of Arabia, the shrub, sea buckthorn originally planted to stabilise the dunes has spread rapidly over the area.

Inside Spooky Candleston Castle - Merthyr Mawr, South Wales
The spooky ruins of Candleston Castle in South Wales, UK.
A look around the spooky ruins of Candleston Castle next to Merthyr Mawr sand dunes near Bridgend. Candleston Castle was actually a fortified 14th-century manor house built in the mId-1300s on top of an older building.
Is it haunted? No, because ghosts don’t exist but people have reported seeing dark figures, mysteriously moving around the ruined walls. Visitors have also felt a chill down their spine as if a shadowy figure has walked behind them.
But I expect it to be the damp southwesterly winds blowing up the Bristol channel.

Merthyr Mawr and Goldeneye
This video is about Merthyr Mawr and Goldeneye on the River Ogmore - Merthyr Mawr Warren
The Merthyr Mawr Warren reserve is situated on the coast between Porthcawl and Ogmore-by-Sea, three miles west of Bridgend. Spread over 323 hectares, with dunes rising to 200 feet -- the second tallest dunes in Europe. The dunes once ran on to join Kenfig dunes, forming part of a huge sandy system that once stretched from the Ogmore river to the Gower peninsula.
Like many old dune systems, many of the plants and animals at Merthyr Mawr are characteristic of those normally found in woodlands, and it was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its important invertebrate population and collections of plant life thriving in the area.
