The Belize Barrier Reef is a 300-kilometer (190 mi) long section of the 900-kilometer (560 mi) Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is continuous from Cancún on the north-eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula through the Riviera Maya and up to Honduras, making it the second largest coral reef system in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It is Belize's top tourist destination, popular for scuba diving and snorkeling and attracting almost half of its 260,000 visitors. It is also vital to the country's fishing industry.[1]
Charles Darwin described it as the most remarkable reef in the West Indies in 1842.
In addition to its barrier reef, it also boasts three distinct Caribbean atolls: Turneffe Atoll, Glover's Reef and Lighthouse Reef. Lighthouse Reef is the most easterly diving area in Belize, it is home to the Great Blue Hole, made famous by Jacques Cousteau in 1970; Turneffe Atoll lies directly to the east of Belize City and is the nearest of the atolls to the capital. These different reefs provide diverse scuba diving opportunities that include walls, pinnacles and reef flats that are located throughout an enormous area of sea.[2]

Belize:
Belize is a country located on the north eastern coast of Central America. It is the only country in the area where English is the official language, although Kriol and Spanish are more commonly spoken. Belize is bordered to the north by Mexico, to the south and west by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean Sea. Its mainland is about 290 km (180 mi) long and 110 km (68 mi) wide.
With 22,960 square kilometres (8,860 sq mi) of land and a population of only 312,698 inhabitants (2010 census),Belize possesses the lowest population density in Central America. The country's population growth rate of 3.15% (2012 est.) is the second highest in the region and one of the highest in the western hemisphere. Belize's abundance of terrestrial and marine species, and its diversity of ecosystems give it a key place within the globally significant Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
Belize has a diverse society, comprising many cultures and languages. It is the only nation in the region with a British colonial heritage, but as a part of the Western Caribbean Zone, it also shares a common heritage with the fellow Anglophone Caribbean countries. In general, Belize is considered to be a Central American nation with strong ties to both the Caribbean and Latin America. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA).
Belize is known for its September Celebrations, and is the birthplace of chewing gum and Punta Rock
The origin of the name Belize is unclear, but the earliest record of the name is found in the journal of the Dominican priest Fray José Delgado, dating to 1677. Delgado recorded the names of three major rivers that he crossed while traveling north along the Caribbean coast: Rio Soyte, Rio Xibum, and Rio Balis. These names, which correspond to the Sittee River, Sibun River, and Belize River, were provided to Delgado by his translator. It is likely that Delgado's Balis was actually the Mayan word belix (or beliz), meaning muddy-watered.
Others have suggested that the name is derived from a Spanish pronunciation of the name of the Scottish buccaneer Peter Wallace, which was applied to an early settlement at the mouth of the Belize River, although there is no proof that Wallace actually settled in the area and some have characterized this claim as a myth.Several other possible etymologies have been suggested by writers and historians, including French and African origins.

Belize Marine Industry Responds to Lionfish.m4v
An invasive species from the Indo-Pacific, lionfish (Pterois volitans) are prolific on the Mesoamerican barrier reef and the atolls of this part of the Caribbean. Believing that lionfish will cause a dangerous imbalance here, many divers bring death from above at the tips of simple, steel spears.

Turneffe Atoll Trust produced An Atoll at Risk Turneffe Reef in Belize
Turneffe Atoll is the largest and most biologically diverse coral atoll in Caribbean; and, in spite of its economic and conservation value, Turneffe is the only atoll in the Mesoamerican Reef System with no significant protection. Until recent years, its relative isolation provided some element of protection; however today Turneffe Atoll is truly An Atoll at Risk.
Improper development practices, overfishing and a lack of meaningful protections are some of the issues urgently needing attention.
Turneffe Atoll Trust produced An Atoll at Risk to educate interested parties of the risks to Turneffe Atoll and other similar marine ecosystems. The film provides insight into the challenges and potential solutions for preserving these unique and ecologically and economically valuable areas. Copies of An Atoll at Risk to be used for educational purposes can be obtained from Turneffe Atoll Trust. Please contact us for further information.

The mission of Turneffe Atoll Trust is to drive conservation and other efforts leading to a healthy ecosystem at Turneffe Atoll supporting sustainable social and economic benefits for Belize and serving as a model for similar coastal marine environments throughout the world.
GREAT NEWS! On November 22, 2012 legislation establishing the TURNEFFE ATOLL MARINE RESERVE was signed by Belize's distinquished Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, Lisel Alamilla.
The turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve encompasses the entire Turneffe Atoll and becomes the largest Marine Reserve in Belize. A detailed Management Plan for the Reserve, funded by Turneffe Atoll Trust through a grant from the Oak Foundation, can now be be accessed.

Belize Barrier Reef Removed From Danger List
Mother Nature Network reports that after a year of extensive conservation moves by the Belize government, UNESCO has removed the country's barrier reef from its List of World Heritage in Danger. The conservation moves included the suspension of offshore oil drilling.
The Belize Reef is the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere and second largest in world. It comprises 80 percent of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. That system was named as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.
Dr. Mechtild Rossler, director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, said, Today’s outcome shows the power of collective action among government, UNESCO, IUCN and civil society and sets an example for the rest of the world.

Our weekend trip in beautiful San Pedro, Belize.
We stayed at the Coco Beach Resort (link below) which was so gorgeous; we loved their pool and swim up bar. The highlight of our trip was an unforgettable Chill Cruise with Island Dream Tours (link below). They took us on a guided snorkel tour of Hol Chan Marine Reserve on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and stopped in Shark Ray Alley. There was also an open bar on board and they served delicious food throughout the day. A must if you're ever in Ambergris Caye!

The Great Blue Hole in Belize seen by airplane
15/7/2017
Flying over the Great Blue Hole in Belize by airplane. The flight lasts 1 hour approximately, taking most of the time to go there and back and 10 minutes flying in circles around the Blue Hole. Views are impressive the whole time, since you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Mesoamerican Coral Reef with so many tons of blue and green colours, while getting to know this natural wonder of the Caribbean. In the flight back, you can also see a wreck ship in the banks of the reef.

A combination of natural factors—climate, the Belize Barrier Reef, over 450 offshore Cayes (islands), excellent fishing, safe waters for boating, scuba diving, and snorkeling, numerous rivers for rafting, and kayaking, various jungle and wildlife reserves of fauna and flora, for hiking, bird watching, and helicopter touring, as well as many Maya ruins—support the thriving tourism and ecotourism industry. Of the hundreds of cave systems, it also has the largest cave system in Central America. Development costs are high, but the Government of Belize has designated tourism as its second development priority after agriculture. In 2012, tourist arrivals totalled 917,869 (with about 584,683 from the U.S.) and tourist receipts amounted to over $1.3 billion.
