Kit Messham-Muir: Interview with Alasdair Groves, artist, Toowoomba, Australia, 11 May 2012
I met Alasdair Groves in 1992. We were both painting students at Sydney College of the Arts and we've been good friends ever since. Alasdair continues to paint and show locally. I went to his studio in country Queensland, Australia and we talked about his practice, what success means for an artist and reminisced a little about our SCA days. This was my very first StudioCrash, back in May 2012. Thanks Al for a great day and a top notch homemade curry.

Go out there, feck the fear, it got me on stage at the Design Conference!
It’s been a little bit of a delay getting this blog out to you, but I promise it’s because I’ve been doing some awesome stuff I am absolutely thrilled to share with you. I want to keep this short and sweet because it’s about the awesome people who put their hearts and souls into what they do, like the wonderful people at the Other Worlds Zine Fair. I had the pleasure of conducting a few spur of the moment interviews with people who deserve to have a voice (I wish I could have interviewed everyone!)
So just under a couple of weeks ago, I heard this guy, Matthew Haynes on the Australian Design Radio podcast, and I liked the cut of his jib, and related to his undying passion to raise the profile of the Brissie design community. I want to do the same for young Sydney designers, and I had to reach out to him. I don’t condone this, but I added him on social media, and I started chatting with him. Next minute, he’s convinced me to come to The Design Conference (affectionately known as TDC) which was to be held a week later, I took the plunge, and booked my tickets. When I got there, I was alone, it was just me, amongst a bunch of maroons, until I met Laurie, an amazing artist, and curator, at First Coat art gallery in Toowoomba. We hit it off straight away, and she became my conference buddy.
Little did I know that matt and Laurie knew each other, and on the last day, when I was late, admittedly because I was buying an awesome pants suit because I’d run out of things to wear, I meet up with Laurie who tells me that Matt wants us to go on stage.
I had no idea this was coming. I had no idea what to say, I had no idea what was going on in general!!! Little old me, Josie, the design student from Sydney, who just started a blog, and took a chance in coming to this conference, was going up on stage.
So Laurie and I go on stage, I trip on the mic cord (please get a cordless one matt) and scream. Theres one way to be remembered, hahaha. But nonetheless, I got the chance, after reaching out, to talk about my blog, and a little about who I am, along with my new friend Laurie!
The moral of this story…. is put yourself out there!
It’s fucking scary, but you can’t wait for things to come to you, you have to give in order to get
…and you’ll meet some amazing people along the way!
I hope you enjoy the video I whipped up, apologies on the audio, it was loud, and I was using my iphone! Hahaha

David Rook Photographer Engagement Shoot
Hey I am David Rook Photographer I photograph weddings in Toowoomba Brisbane, Sun Shine Coast, Gold Coast Darling Downs and Darling Downs
David Rook Photographer is a photographic studio that is based in Toowoomba. Being a photographer based in Toowoomba enables me to photograph wedding across south east Queensland.
This is a blog of a photographic engagement shoot I did at Garnett Lehman Park Toowoomba. It’s unfortunate that Toowoomba’s Garnett Lehman Park has been marked for redevelopment. Garnett Lehman Park Toowoomba is beautiful spot. I often refer to Garnett Lehman Park in Toowoomba as the Disney Forrest. Garnett Lehman Park in Toowoomba has lots of native trees and well kept lawns much like I imagine how a Disney forest would be in real life.
I enjoy photographing engaged couples they are always excited and lots of fun. Engagement photographic sessions are ideal it allows couples to get to know their wedding photographer. Being the photography studio that is David Rook Photographer based in Toowoomba location engagement shoots are relaxed and informal.
Garnett Lehman Park Toowoomba is one of my favourite locations for engagement photographic session because it has some many different photographic locations in one convenient spot. It is only 10 minutes from Toowoomba’s CBD. The light is always beautiful at Garnett Lehman Park Toowoomba. David Rook Photographer finding photographic locations with beautiful light is essential for creating stunning photographs. Garnett Lehman Park Toowoomba has swings and play ground equipment for cute couple moments and trees that look as through your million miles away from Toowoomba. Garnett Lehman Park has a creek following through it as well which also makes engagement photographic sessions interesting as well.
This particular engagement photographic session was done in winter. The tones in these photographs are cooler to reflect the time of year.
This couple were relaxed and easy going and this came across in their poses and attitude towards the engagement shoot. These guys were easy and fun to work with and l am looking forward to photographing their wedding.
I have photograph weddings at Garnett Lehman Park Toowoomba. Garnett Lehman Park Toowoomba was a great location to photograph wedding especially if the kids are in the wedding party.
If you have a favourite location where you first met or were you said yes to your wedding proposal just ask and we can do your engagement shoot at your romantic location. I take an individual approach to engagement photography and weddings. Nothing is too much of a Hassel or a drama; if you have a special request just ask.
I am really happy how this engagement photographic shoot came together. Feel to check out their gallery at
I love what I do and I am sure you will too.
For your perfect day and perfect photos call me David Rook Photographer on 0411 323 814.

SUMMARY
- The birthplace of this curly-haired pig is Hungary where it was discovered in the mid-19th century. Due to the fleece covering this animal, it resembles a sheep, therefore, such a name!
- The name of this species is roxellana, and there is a story behind it. It is believed that they were called this way after the supposedly snub-nosed courtesan of Suleiman the Magnificent (a 16th century Sultan of the Ottoman Empire).
- They were called like this because of the resemblance of their mustache to that of German Emperor Wilhelm II.
- Patagonia Mara is the fourth largest rodent on our planet. There are several interesting facts about them. Females often put offsprings into crèches for safety.
- Fluffy cows are looked after by people whose work is to wash, dry and use products to style these animals, so they look as fluffy as they do! It is necessary to maintain them daily, and it will take months of regular grooming until they get this lovely look of kids toys.
- If you see a creature which looks as if it’s trying to catch an alien radio signal from space, it’s most likely Markhor Goat. They can grow as long as 6 ft from head to tail!
- If you can’t decide if you want to have a dog or a raccoon as a pet, we have just the thing for you - raccoon dog! Despite having raccoon-like markings on their fur, they are not very closely related to the North American raccoon.
- Blue Footed Booby are to catch your eye if you ever visit the Galapagos Islands. They can look a bit clumsy and comical on land, but they are excellent at flying and swimming.
- Colugo has a large gliding membrane (like a flying squirrel), and they can glide for long distances between trees standing far apart.
- Even if the Poodle Moth may look as if it lives in Antarctica with all this fur, in fact, it comes from Venezuela, a tropical country. Its hairs don’t serve for heating.
BONUS
Cloud Antelope! This species lives in the clouds (that’s why such a name)! Its bright blue fur is the reflection of cloudless blue skies in the area of its habitat. Its diet consists of sun rays and candies...

Selden Society 2018 lecture series—Law and politics in McCawley's case
The appointment of Thomas William McCawley to the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1917 was a decision destined to provoke controversy. The challenge to his appointment was based on what were called 'purely legal and constitutional grounds', but personal motives, partisan manoeuvring and ideological goals were never far from the surface. The case was heard by the Supreme Court, the High Court of Australia and ultimately the Privy Council of the United Kingdom, and involved several layers of constitutional controversy. McCawley ultimately won the case and was soon after appointed Chief Justice. Sadly he did not live long to enjoy it. He died three years later while rushing to catch a train at Roma Street Station.
