Poas Volcano, Grecia & Sarchi. Costa Rica.
We take the Pan-American Highway towards the city of Alajuela. In this route we pass by the Agriculture Monument, the Monument to Juan Santamaria and the famous Mango Park. As we ascend towards the volcano we stop for a brief explanation on our golden bean, coffee, and then continue our trip through fern, flower and strawberry farms.
There is a noticeable change in temperature and vegetation, preparing us for the pleasure in the exuberant cloud forest of Poas Volcano.
In the Volcano we will have time to enjoy the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles, and hike on a trail to the beautiful Botos Lagoon. We will learn about the different ecosystems in the park. After visiting the volcano, we will have time to enjoy a delicious lunch in one of the typical restaurants of the area.
Our third stop will be in the beautiful Grecia. Considered one of the cleanest towns of Latin America, it is home of the only Metal Church in Central America and a of national monument that fills its inhabitants with pride. In order to catch a glimpse of the local lifestyle we will also visit the central market area.
Our last stop is on Sarchi, known as the Cradle of Costa Rican Artisans because of its fine workshops. Here we will have time to enjoy the artistic work of the local artisans as they create the famous typical oxcart. You will be able to shop for that special souvenir to take home.
Suggested Equipment: light jacket, comfortable shoes, binoculars and camera.

Costa Rica: Life in Grecia - International Living
Living in Grecia, Costa Rica - International Living
International Living Costa Rica correspondent, Jason Holland shows footage of his beautiful rental home in Grecia, Costa Rica. Just like any desirable retirement destination, you can find luxury in Costa Rica when it comes to where you live.
But there is plenty of opportunity for regular folks to find their own slice of heaven.
Hilltop homes with views of the Central Valley - for as little as $145,000 you can buy a comfortable three-bedroom home here. Or try renting across the street for just $400 or $500 a month. Tico-style homes can be had for $90,000 or less. It's the same story on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts in Costa Rica.
Jason showcases his home, located about five minutes outside the town of Grecia in the Central Valley, as well as a two-bedroom down the street that enjoys the same privacy and quiet, natural surroundings -- at half the price.
Grecia, population 16,000, is an hour north of San Jose, and just 20 minutes from the country's main international airport. With a weekly farmer's market for low-priced fruits and vegetables, many department stores, access to good medical and dental services, and several great quality -- and cheap -- restaurants (including a top-notch steakhouse), Grecia is a very comfortable town.

Doka, Grecia & Sarchi
This tour begins with a wonderful drive through some of the largest coffee and sugar cane and Doka coffee plantations in Costa Rica. The Doka Coffee Plantations are located on the fertile slopes of the Alajuela Poas Volcano. The rich soil and ideal altitude and climate have made them famous because of its excellent coffee. The main objective of the Coffee Tour is to educate and inform local and international visitors with regards to the whole coffee production process. The tour takes place on the Doka Estate, you´ll learn how to produce, harvest and process the plant and how to roast the grain.
Next you´ll visit the picturesque town of Grecia, known as one of the cleanest towns in all of Central America. Grecia is an important tourist destination mainly due to its unique metal church, which is a deep dark red color. The Cathedral de la Mercedes is a gothic style church made from metal pieces that were imported from Belgium in the 1890's. The church is as beautiful from the inside as it is impressive from the outside. Besides the church, the Grecia Regional Museum is also worth a visit as well as the insect and butterfly museums located on the north end of the central park. It is home to over 50,000 different insects and butterflies.
