TOKYO: NIHONBASHI KYOBASHI FESTIVAL - 日本橋・京橋まつり
NIHONBASHI KYOBASHI FESTIVAL-TOKYO!!!.
A grand parade that takes place at the starting point of the Five Routes of Nihonbashi's main Chuo-dori Ave.
Nihonbashi, literally meaning Japan bridge, it the name of a bridge and the district it's located. The bridge was in the Edo period designated by the Tokugawa Shogunate as the starting point of five major roads heading from Edo (modern day Tokyo) to other parts of Japan, and commerce has flourished here ever since. Kyobashi is the name of the district adjoining Nihonbashi in the south (its name also comes from the name of a bridge called Kyobashi which used to be here).
In late October, a festival called the Nihonbashi Kyobashi Matsuri (日本橋・京橋まつり) is held in these two districts.

Ningyocho (人形町) :a taste of shitamachi (Tokyo)
Ningyocho is a neighborhood of the Nihonbashi district, located in Tokyo's Chuo ward. Ningyocho, literally doll town, used to be an entertainment district, a town of doll makers, puppeteers, and puppet theaters during the Edo period (1603-1868). It also was the birthplace of Edo Kabuki theatre. After the theaters burnt down in the late Edo period they were moved to Asakusa but Ningyocho has kept its name.
A good number of buildings have been preserved in this area, and many of the traditional restaurants and craftsman-shops are here for over 100 years. The town is not known anymore for its dolls, but rather for these, often high-class, traditional restaurants and shops.
Ningyocho is the perfect place for those who want to experience Tokyo’s shitamachi (old downtown where the common people lived in the Edo period).
On the main street, Ningyocho-dori, there are two clock towers. They come alive with a little puppet show for the passers-by to enjoy every hour from 11am to 7pm.
In the Ningyocho area there are the 7 shrines of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune. You can visit all of them by walking.

In Tokyo, These Trains Jingle All the Way
While most train stations alert passengers with basic dings and dongs, metro riders in Japan are treated to uniquely crafted melodies. Minoru Mukaiya is the mastermind behind these jingles—he’s made around 200 distinct chimes for over 110 stations. For Minoru, there’s no greater joy than bringing a little bit of music to millions across Japan every day.

JR East E231-500 Series - Arriving at Shibuya Station (Yamanote Line) JR東日本 E231系500番台
The E231-500 Series (E231系 500番台), introduced since 2002, is the main type of rolling stock operating on the popular JR Yamanote Line (山手線). The Yamanote Line is the Circle Line in Tokyo, forming important links between major city and transportation hubs. These trains are notoriously over-crowded during peak hours.
They are fitted with Mitsubishi Electric IGBT-VVVF traction control system. Interior features include LCD display screens and standing room cars which has since become standard in the industry.
The E231-500 series is set to be replaced by a new generation of E235 rolling stock, which a test trainset has been introduced since 2015.

PROGRAM NOTES
Hiroshige Ando (1797-1858) traveled the Tokaido from Edo to Kyoto in 1832. The official party
he was traveling with were transporting horses which were gifts to be offered to the Imperial court.
The journey greatly inspired Hiroshige for he sketched many of its scenes during his round trip travels.
In all, Hiroshige produced 55 prints for the series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido. Fifty three of the
prints represent each of the 53 post stations along the way. The two additional prints are of the starting and
ending points. The post stations offered food, lodging and stables for travelers of the Tokaido Highway.
This is Hiroshige's Leaving Edo : Nihonbashi, the bridge of Japan and is number 1/55 in the series of prints.
The Nihonbashi bridge was the central point of development of which is now a business district of Chuo, Tokyo, Japan aptly named the Nihonbashi District. For centuries it thrived as a mercantile district. The first department store ever developed in Japan was by the Mitsui family named Mitsukoshi.
From its early days as a fish market to the current financial district of Tokyo (and Japan), this bridge spanning the Nihonbashi River is a true landmark in Tokyo. In fact, highway signs that state the distance to Tokyo actually state the distance to the Nihonbashi bridge.
Up until shortly before 1964, you could see Mount Fuji from the bridge however the 1964 Summer Olympics put in a raised expressway over the Nihonbashi bridge, obscuring its view entirely. Petitions to relocate the expressway underground in order to regain view of Mount Fuji are continuous but so far have been futile due to the costs for such a project.

Day 2 Nihonbashi, Tokyo 2018 *Back at Nihonbashi Station*
After strolling around Nihonbashi and visiting both the Nihonbashi Bridge(Japanese for Japan Bridge) and the Fukutoku Shrine, I decided to head back to the Nihonbashi Station. If you would like to go to Nihonbashi, I definitely suggest the Nihonbashi Bridge and the Fukutoku Shrine. Other interesting places are the COREDO Nihonbashi Department Store, where you can buy souvenirs, and the Nihonbashi Tendon Kaneko Hannosuke Restaurant, which is famous for their tempura. Many Buddhist temples are in the area, including the Bentendo temple dedicated to goddess Benzaiten, on an island in Shinobazu Pond. The Kan'ei-ji, a major temple of the Tokugawa shōguns, stood in this area, and its pagoda is now within the grounds of the Ueno Zoo. Nearby is the Ueno Tōshō-gū, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Near the Tokyo National Museum there is The International Library of Children's Literature.
