A Sunday morning at Flinders Street Station - Metro Trains Melbourne
In this video we see some trains at Flinders Street Station; Melbourne's main railway station serving as the main hub of the metropolitan rail network. Here we see a couple of Metro Comeng and X'trapolis EMU's departing various platforms.
Usually a busy and bustling station, the station is rather quiet on a Sunday morning. Under the Sunday timetable trains on most lines run every 40 minutes until 10am when normal service levels resume. This entire video was filmed in the space of half an hour while I was waiting to transfer between lines.
However this wasn't a typical Sunday morning as heritage operator Steamrail was running their second Snow Train to Traralgon. Hauled by two Victorian Railways R Class steam locomotives R711 & R761, we see the train arrive and depart from platform 10.

A tour of Melbourne's new High Capacity Metro Train (mockup)
In this video we take a glimpse of the future with a tour of Melbourne's new High Capacity Metro Train in mockup form. To be built by the Evolution Rail consortium (made up of Downer Rail and CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles), the High Capacity Metro Train will be the first major procurement of suburban rollingstock in Melbourne since the introduction of the Siemens and X'trapolis trains in 2002-2003.
65 of these new trains have been ordered and are scheduled to enter service on the Cranbourne/Pakenham lines from mid 2019. These trains will later run through the Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel and onto the Sunbury line from 2026. They will originally operate as 7 car trains but can be extended to 9 or 10 carriages in the future.
A mockup for these trains were created to allow the consortium and government to consult with stakeholders in assisting with the design of the new train. In February 2018 the mockup was displayed at Birrarung Marr for the public to inspect, where we film this video.
The new trains will feature:
- A continuous train with no intermediate cabs.
- A streamlined front end with hidden couplers to reduce incidents of train surfing.
- A higher number of priority seating and disabled spaces compared to existing trains.
- LED passengers displays throughout each carriages.
- Plenty of grab handles and rails for standing passengers.
- CCTV and emergency help points.
- Spaces for bikes and prams.
The exact design of the train is yet to be finalized.

Trains on the Sydney Metro Northwest - Australia's First Metro Line (Opening Day)
Take a look at the new Sydney Metro! In this video we see Sydney Metro trains at various locations along the new Sydney Metro Northwest. Opening on the 26th May 2019 is Australia's first ever metro line featuring driverless trains and platform screen doors. The line is 26km long and features 13 stations, running from Chatswood to Tallawong in Sydney's northwest. The line will run every 5 minutes during peak hours and every 10 at other times.
We visit the following new stations on the line on opening day:
- Tallawong
- Rouse Hill
- Kellyville
- Bella Vista
- Castle Hill
The opening day attracted many people from across Sydney as well as transport enthusiasts from all around Australia and overseas. Free travel was provided with trains operating to a modified timetable of every 7 minutes. Overall 140,000 people used the train on opening day.
Being a new line though there were teething problems. Trains often overshot/undershot platforms and had to realign themselves to meet the platform screen doors. Sometimes doors failed to open, trains were delayed on platforms and announcements played at incorrect times. The worst problem of the day occurred at Macquarie Park where a train with defective doors caused delays up to 30 - 40 minutes. However these issues will likely be ironed out in the future.
Overall the line will be a great asset for Sydney's growing northwestern suburbs. Stage 2 of the line is under construction which will see the line extended through Sydney city and onto Bankstown after the existing Bankstown line is converted to metro standards.

Passenger Trains in Melbourne, Australia 2017
The Melbourne rail network is operated by Metro Trains Melbourne under franchise from the Government of Victoria. The network is based on a commuter rail model centred on the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD) and Flinders Street Station, rather than a rapid transit model, with a focus on services at peak periods. A rapid transit system for Melbourne is currently in planning stages. ~Wikipedia

This system consists of a mix of styles and kinds of trains..Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds the world's largest natural harbour, and sprawls towards the Blue Mountains to the west.
Australia is a country and continent surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans. Its major cities – Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide – are coastal. Its capital, Canberra, is inland. Metro Trains around Melbourne #19
In the nineteenth installment of my Metro trains around Melbourne series we see Comeng, Siemens and X'trapolis trains at various locations around the Melbourne metropolitan rail network. These clips were generally recorded while chasing various suburban heritage tours throughout the past year, including Steamrail's April 2019 suburban shuttles & R707 Operations' Steam & Streamliner to Stony Point, Meander to Mernda and Somerville Sojourn tours.
Among the highlights we see trains at Kensington and Newmarket trackside on the Craigieburn line and some X'trapolis trains at Middle Gorge, one of the newest stations in Melbourne. We also see some three-car Siemens trains on the Williamstown shuttles at North Williamstown, where we also take a sneak peak of some of Melbourne's new High Capacity Metro Train's under construction. We also see a Sprinter DMU at Baxter on the Stony Point line.

Hitachi Heaven - Metro Trains Melbourne suburban electric passenger trains - PoathTV
The Hitachi suburban passenger trains operated by Metro Trains Melbourne are almost 40 years old, yet despite many attempts to remove them from the system the trains can still be seen across the network. These scenes were filmed betweeen Newport and Laverton on Saturday 2 April 2011.
Background information about these trains from
Hitachi is the name given for one of a set of electric multiple unit trains that operate on the suburban railway network of Melbourne, Australia. Introduced to service in 1972, the trains are the oldest in the city's suburban fleet still in revenue service. Electrical equipment was supplied by Commonwealth Engineering to designs by Hitachi of Japan, leading to their official name today, though no actual Hitachi-supplied components were used in their construction. Hitachi trains have been also known as Martin & King or Stainless Steel trains officially, and are one of the few trains still in operation that allows windows to be opened. .

Metro Trains around Melbourne #21
In the twenty first installment of my Metro trains around Melbourne series we see Comeng, Siemens and X'trapolis trains at various locations around the Melbourne metropolitan rail network.
This is the first 'trackside' edition of my Metro Trains around Melbourne series; where every single clip was recorded at a trackside location such as pedestrian and level crossings, overpasses and bridges, footpaths and behind fences. As long as the clip wasn't recorded at a train station platform it goes in the video.
Among the locations visited include the Edithvale pedestrian crossing, an overpass at Kananook, behind the fence at Seddon, and a couple of clips at Kensington (recorded on Melbourne Cup Day 2017 so all the trains were carrying drunk toffs from Toorak to and from the races).
Time for the usual disclaimer; despite being a 'trackside' video all the clips were filmed from public areas. Don't trespass into the rail corridor to get your shots.

Metro Trains Melbourne’s Story
When Metro Trains Melbourne won the contract to manage Melbourne’s busy metropolitan rail network in 2009 they were faced with a massive task involving the merging of four previously separate companies. For the Learning and Development team this meant finding commonality among the existing training cultures and bringing cohesion and consistency to learning for nearly 5000 staff working across station operations, train driving, project delivery, corporate management and maintenance of rail stock, tracks, signals and electrical infrastructure.
The result is the achievement of a number of “industry-altering” milestones: the establishment of a $3.5 million state of the art training academy; achievement of RTO status; qualifications for more than 2000 staff across a range of disciplines; design and delivery of new courseware contextualised for the rail industry; and, importantly for an inherently dangerous work environment, sweeping policy changes that led to a complete re-design of safety training courses.

A Sunday Morning at Southern Cross Station - Metro Trains Melbourne
In this video we see some trains at Southern Cross Station. Southern Cross is Melbourne's largest train station and serves as the main hub for V/Line regional trains and coach services. Once known as Spencer Street station, the station was renamed in 2006 as part of a major redevelopment which coincided with Melbourne's hosting of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Filmed on a Sunday morning between 8:20am to 9am while waiting for my Shepparton train, we see various Metro trains including Comeng's (including one of the last Alstom refurbished Comeng's that hasn't yet undergone the life-extension refurbishment), Siemens and X'trapolis EMU's.
