It is considered the oldest religious building in the city, being built at the end of the 15th century, probably on the ruins of an older settlement. The first documented mention dates back to 1645, being mentioned as the Royal Church of Craiova. It was rebuilt by the care of King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth, between 1889-1893. In 1939 it became a metropolitan cathedral. The last restoration work was carried out between 2006-2007.
