Just 20 minutes from the centre of Australia's culture capital is a true masterpiece in golf design.
The Metropolitan Golf Club
The Metropolitan Golf Club, one of Melbourne’s renowned ‘Sandbelt’ courses and widely regarded as one of the finest championship courses in Australia, is located approximately 20 minutes from the CBD.
Metropolitan enjoys a reputation as one of the best-conditioned and most beautiful courses in the country. Pure couch grass fairways with large, fast bent-grass greens that are hand-mown to the edges of the greenside bunkers add greatly to the challenge of the course.
Please take a tour of the Metropolitan Golf Club.

SOUTHERN GOLF CLUB - MELBOURNE - VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
SOUTHERN GOLF CLUB - MELBOURNE - VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
6263m (Men) - Par 72, AMCR 73
5437m (Ladies) - Par 74, AWCR 74
Designer: S Berriman, P Tompson & M Wolveridge (1970's), Bob Shearer (1990's)
A golf club that has produced many great champions, Southern embraces its enviable location on Melbourne's famous sandbelt.
With a more relaxed feel than perhaps some of its illustrious neighbours the course tolerates no relaxation against the golfers handicap. Crisp couch fairways and fast running greens provide magnificent year round playing surfaces, while the use of cluster style bunkering, both at the greensides and as strategic fairway narrowing, mean you really need to bring your short game to this club.
A course that easily blends the older, more established, heavily wooded golf holes (12 thru 18) with modern links golf course design elements (holes 1-11) this is a course that is easy to walk, provides for great variety over mixed terrain and encourages inventive shot making on approach.
A fabulous modern clubhouse .....flexible membership packages and a range of a good value corporate day products. Well recommended!

Karl playing at The Metropolitan Golf Club, Age 10
The Stuart Appleby Junior Golf's first Regional Series for 2012 was played at Australia's #7 ranked course, The Metropolitan Golf Course
The Metro is located on the famous Melbourne Sanbelt with bunkering by the legendary Dr Alistair MacKenzie, designer with Bobby Jones of Augusta National, and by himself of Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath and so many of the iconic courses around the world.
A comedy of errors saw us arrive without Karl's clubs, so an urgent dash back over to Karl's home course got us back to The Metro with just minutes before his Tee Time, leaving Karl without a warm-up.
140 players entered, with Karl competing in the A handicap section against players aged up to 17 years.
He shot 83 for the round. With his Fairway woods unusually erratic, Karl relied heavily on his Driving and short game to shoot a solid score.
Complete scores are available at;

HUNTINGDALE GOLF CLUB - MELBOURNE - VICTORIA AUSTRALIA
HUNTINGDALE GOLF CLUB -- MELBOURNE -- VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
6363m -- Par 72, AMCR 74
Designer: C H Alison
One of the famed Melbourne sandbelt courses, Huntingdale Golf Club is the traditional Home of the Australian Masters having hosted the championship for thirty years (1979 -- 2008).
From the tees seemingly generous fairways, bordered by tall mature trees and native vegetation, combine with an exceptional strategic bunker plan (95 in all) narrowing towards landing areas. With most of the large greens heavily protected, position from the tee is vital to negotiating this course successfully.
Perhaps the most striking feature of Huntingdale is the apparent dedication to maintenance, preservation and enhancement of what is a magnificent environment in which to play golf. I doubt many golfers will ever feel such anticipation of the shot that lies ahead, to 18 greens so perfectly framed to their magnificent backdrops.
A wonderful test of golf in a perfect setting.

Ogilvy Clayton Cocking Mead golf course architects Mike Cocking and Ashley Mead speak about the redevelopment of the new Peninsula Kingswood CGC layout.
Kingswood Golf Club and Peninsula Country Golf Club officially merged together in September of 2013. This was the first merger of two golf clubs in Australia. This merger provides the platform to create a first class private Club that will offer the very best in sandbelt golf with “state of the art” facilities and financial security.
The club will operate out of the Dingley and Frankston sites for the next 3-5 years . Members have the luxury of playing 3 courses in that time.
The Club is formally known as the Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club.

THE VICTORIA GOLF CLUB - MELBOURNE - VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
THE VICTORIA GOLF CLUB -- MELBOURNE -- VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
6278m -- Par 72, ACR 73
Designers: O. Damman, W. Meader and Dr. A MacKenzie (bunkering and design plan recommendations)
An amazing history that dates back to 1903 and a club with a tradition of producing champions in Australian and world golf. In 1954 two of the worlds most prized trophies sat side-by-side on the club's mantelpiece....Peter Thomson -- British Open Champion (one of five wins) and Doug Bachli -- British Amateur Champion.
Alister MacKenzie, the famed English golf course architect (and designer of Royal Melbourne), although requested to cast his eye over the course during it's construction from 1926 -- 1930, ultimately played an influential role and his artful hand can be seen in evidence at Victoria Golf Club.
A wonderful example of sandbelt golf, combines an interesting layout over varied terrain, where natural sandy roughs and a magnificent bunker plan reach into the fairways in an overall masterplan of purposeful design. This is a course that the golfer literally needs to pick his way around with careful club selection and an overall strategy of positioning in order to approach the heavily fortified greens.
Commitment to the maintenance and preservation of this classic sand belt course is in evidence at every turn and the club's indigenous revegetation policy a benchmark for such projects in the golfing community . A wonderful golf course with roots deeply embedded in the real traditions of the game. An icon of Australian golf.....acclaimed worldwide!
