Ethiopia Marks 74th Anniversary of Its Anti fascist War Victory
Ethiopia on Tuesday marked the 74th anniversary of its anti-Fascist war victory at the Meyazia 27 Square, or Arat Kilo, in capital Addis Ababa.
Thousands of people including senior Ethiopian officials, foreign diplomats in Addis Ababa, war veterans and their relatives as well as ordinary residents attended the ceremony, during which Ethiopian Present Mulatu Teshome laid a wreath in front of the monument commemorating war heroes.
The Ethiopian troops defeated Fascist Italy in 1941 after six years of resistance and fighting.
In the Ethiopian calendar of Meyazia 27 (May 5), 1941, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie returned to the capital Addis Ababa after the victory. May 5 was then set as a national day to commemorate the victory of Ethiopia's anti-Fascist war.
In his keynote speech, Mulatu said the victory of the Ethiopian people also belongs to the people of the entire African continent and the entire world.
Many veterans who participated in the war against Fascist Italy also attended the ceremony to recall their memory.
In 1935 when the enemy invaded and tried to take over our country, we Ethiopians fought against them for more than five years. I was in my 20s at that time and I, together with the elder generation, fought against them. Then we managed to force them out of our country, because they just couldn't beat us, said Demsie Tsegaye, a noncommissioned officer.
