Amsterdam Painting Project by Favela Painting
In 2016, Favelapainting returned to The Netherlands to start the first project in their own country. The refugee crisis in Europe finds cities in need of new and fast solutions to help create a humane and livable situation for refugees in their new temporary homes.
In Amsterdam the former ‘Bijlmerbajes’ prison was closed and quickly turned into a temporary refugee living facility. Prisons are not the most welcoming places and the Bijlmerbajes is not different. The Amsterdam Painting project aimed to transform this huge complex with six giant grey towers that have long been an eyesore in Amsterdam’s skyline.
The project aimed to transform the buildings, both in-and outside, in order to recreate their new identity as a new home to the refugees. And at the same time offer opportunities in form of skill training, network building and job opportunity, while empowering the participants to ‘make the place their own’.

::: NOORDERLICHT Cafe A'dam :::
Easily recognizable by its airplane hangar shape and transparent, greenhouse-like architecture, Noorderlicht (Northern Lights) is a boisterous café where artists and creative types come for indoor and outdoor drinking, dining, and dancing -- not to mention an extraordinary view of the city center from the other side of the Ij River.
The unique design of the building enhances the surroundings as it's located in the NDSM yard -- a former shipyard turned cultural hotspot featuring visual arts, design, theater, film, media, and architecture.
Inside, the warm colors of the wall hangings and curtains complement light wooden floors, tables detailed with polished driftwood, and even a disco ball dropping from the ceiling.
Outside, the grassy lawn is dotted with wicker chairs, cushioned couches, and picnic tables where patrons gather for lunch under the sun during the day, or for dinner and music under twinkling lights in the evening.
Noorderlicht also has a steady roster of events ranging from campfires and poetry readings to live music and DJ nights that usually inspire some high-energy dancing amongst the young, eclectic crowd. On those nights, the greenhouse is set spectacularly ablaze with sound and colorful lights that make it visible clear across the river -- hence the café's name.
Given its inviting location in the center of a vibrant cultural area, Noorderlicht is a dynamic locale that attracts an equally dynamic and easygoing crowd both day and night.
Sahand Sahebdivani at ATCR 2016
Sahand is a professional storyteller, radio maker , musician and journalist. He was three-years old when his family had to escape Ayatollah's regime in Iran. They fled the country by horses through snowy mountaintops and sought political asylum in the Netherlands. They had to leave all their belongings behind, except for their stories. Every evening Sahand listened to stories told by his father about ancient heroes and wise kings, about his grandmother and the street where he used to live. And now, Sahand spreads these stories and inspires people. For the past decade he runs the most popular storytelling center of the Netherlands, hosting storytelling nights in Dutch and English. In 2014, he has become National Storyteller of the year.
On 13th of June 2016, Sahand was invited by the Dutch Chair to ATCR.

Sahand's mother sings so beautifully at Mezrab
Bedankt!'
How stories overcome differences | Raphael Rodan & Sahand Sahebdivani | TEDxDenHelder
At what age do we become conscious of which group we belong to? And how does this process even work? See how an Israeli and an Iranian overcame their differences and help others to overcome theirs.
Raphael en his friend Sahand founded the Mezrab school for storytelling. They teach people how to share stories in an authentic and creative way.
