Malta 2018: Mgarr ix Xini y Xewkija
Mgarr ix-Xini
Mgarr ix-Xini, is a bay close to Ghajnsielem (southwest), Xewkija and Sannat (southeast) on the Maltese island of Gozo. It lies in a gorge to the west of Mgarr Harbour, accessible from Sannat as well as the nearby village of Xewkija.
During the rule of the Order, it served as a small harbour for galleys. A small watchtower was built to defend the area in 1661, and it was restored several times in recent years. The movie titled By the Sea, starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt was partially filmed at Mgarr ix-Xini from August to November 2014.

In life you need courage to keep on going
you cannot keep looking at the past
I really don't mind the fireworks, it's just that
they're on top of my head!
the echo is still going ... it stopped now.
It takes a lot of courage to leap off the rocks
into the unknown
you have to calculate everything the
depth of the water,
your posture, the protruding rocks,
the speed of descent, the wind, the people around you,
you and escape route.
you need to think of the dangers and the risks
or maybe just think of nothing
and let yourself go!
When I jump I have no fear and I'm sure that I'm gonna jump properly in the water.
This is how I met the local icon John il-Wijza.
My name is John and everybody
knows we like Bob Marley, because of my lifestyle, of my hair and of my free life.
I am happy with the nature with dogs and cats around me, and fields around me
and in the future ... I have no idea,
I live day by day!
Young people should find out themselves who they are,
They must, you know,
they must feel they are existing in this world
and they have to create things in life.
Everyone has different thoughts in life and for me, the most I can
tell them is to enjoy the life, to have peace and respect other people
and to respect the nature.
Behind me, it's the bay of Imgarr Ix-Xini
Most of the movie By the Sea of Angelina Jolie was filmed in this bay
and the hotel, which all a set,
was all and set was built somewhere here yes, roughly ...
yeah, that's why the hotel was built!
You are not perfect in life, sometimes you get down
and when things come all together complicated I couldn't resist and
I changed, then, quickly and I made, like a, a hold-up in a bank
in Gharb, Gozo.
i've been also in prison, let's say it,
and I hope
I will not react again to such things in life
you know, it's not a good idea to take
your, how to say, your ... your violence I rather feel somebody to hit me, I say
give me one, on the other side
Jumping requires lots of courage and even when you thought you've found the
courage you might realise that you're
not yet ready and instead decide to wait a little longer
but what if jump was a bad idea!
When I was younger I used to play ahhh, I've been shot, I've been shot!
Then eventually a friend take the plunge and everything becomes much easier!
Thank you very much! I really enjoyed the discussion with you!
And as usual, if you like my videos don't forget to Like and subscribe on Facebook and
YouTube and share it with your friends!
See you next week!

BEAUTIFUL GOZO - Mgarr Ix-Xini
From the 'Beautiful Gozo' Series comes another short video of mine and this time it's the beautiful fjord of Mgarr Ix-Xini. I hope you enjoy it.

Shot Night Heron retrieved from Mġarr ix-Xini
On September 8th, BirdLife Malta was contacted by members of the public to retrieve two shot birds in one day, both of them herons - a protected species.
After the Grey Heron collected from De La Salle school grounds in the morning, a Night Heron (Kwakka) was retrieved from Mġarr ix-Xini in Gozo. Both birds were confirmed shot thus becoming the third and fourth known victims of the 2017 autumn hunting season.
The vet certified the Night Heron collected from Gozo as having been shot in the wing and in the eye. Unfortunately the protected bird, which was retrieved alive, did not make it and succumbed to the shotgun injuries it suffered.
The bird was discovered by 16-year old Sol Pearson, a Xewkija resident, while walking in a nearby valley.

Gozo Ebike Tour and Gozo Cycling
After being collected at the Mgarr Ferry Terminal from Malta we travelled through Victoria the Capital of Gozo to Xewkija where my ebike and guide awaited to take me on an amazing leisurely journey for a 20 mile ride through glorious countryside, clifftops, beaches and villages.
We headed North East towards Xaghra but on the outskirts of town we turned down a narrow country lane which we followed through small farms for 2 miles before heading back to the main road. We could have rode on to Ramla Bay and Ramla beach to visit the Calypso Cave but instead we skirted the eastern boundary of Xaghra Northwards for 3 miles to Marsalforn, all the while stopping to take photos of all the beauty that is Gozo.
At Marsalforn we stopped to buy a packed lunch and water before pushing on for just another mile to the Salt Pans where we stumbled upon a promotion video being recorded for Red Bull by one of their Pro cycling stunt men.
Another mile along the cliff tops to Reqqa Point and Billinghurst Cavern, past Wied il-Ghasri to Wied ll-Mielah before heading for the Crafts Village of Għarb.
Gozo is famous for granite carving, silver filigree and lace, hand-blown glassware and honey which can all be seen here in Gharb being crafted by skilled locals who will be happy to sell you their unique wares.
But that will have to wait for another day, as we turned sharply Eastwards to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu, a Roman Catholic minor basilica and national shrine located close by.
The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu and is the only place where we met with a small group of tourists come to visit this site.
Across the road is a long track leading up to the shrine from farmland in the valley with stations of the cross carved in marble.
After a stop here for more photographs, we cycled on through Ghasri with church domes pointing to the sky over every valley, back towards Victoria, passing the Gozo Folklore Museum, the old prison, Gozo Museum of Archeology, the Opera House, St.Georges Basilica through the very heart of Victoria St.Francis Square to the South coast at Mgarr ix-Xini with amazing views of the secluded bay.
From Mgarr ix-Xini it was Northwards again for the last 4 miles through Tingi and Batista with it’s rotunda of St.John Baptist Church to our start and finish point at Xewkija.
This cycle ride was the most picturesque, leisurely cycle ride I’ve ever done in my life, and I never wanted it to end. There are so many alternative cycle routes to take on the Island of Gozo, and already I’ve mapped out a couple which I’ll do when I next return to Gozo in a few months time.
This ebike Ride will take me back through San Lawrenze and Blue Hole to Dweirja Bay and the Inland Sea Dive-site to take a boat trip from the Inland Sea and dive centre, through and under the cliffs out into the open sea to view where the Azure Window stood until recently.
Follow the coast down from here past Dwejra Bay, Fungus Rock, Wardija Punic Temple, SAN Raflu Lake to picturesque Xlendi Bay with a visit to Xlendi Tower and return to Xewkija and Victoria through the farms of Munxar.
There are just so many routes to safely ride cycles either off road or even on road, or you could just as well hire a Segway tour and pretty much do just the same mileage.
Of course if neither of these activities is for you, these cycle and Segway routes can just as easily be done by walking, there’s a bus route to many parts of Gozo to get you to the start point or from the finish point of your tour.

The Island of Gozo: Sacred Island - Natural Beauty
The Maltese Islands have been considered as sacred islands since earliest prehistory. Infact there are thirty ancient temple sites on the Maltese Islands in an area approximately 122 square miles (316 square km).
This sacred atmosphere is quite predominant in the island of Gozo, where, apart from the Ġgantija prehistoric temples, one could find magnificent churches across the small villages. The most famous temples of the modern era are the domeless Cathedral dominating the Ċittadella, the Basilica of Ta’ Pinu and the Rotunda at Xewkija.
But apart from being a Sacred Island, Gozo is also a land of natural beauty. According to local tradition, Gozo was the island where Ulysses spent his time with the nymph Calypso in a cave over the beautiful bay of Ramla l-Ħamra. The Gozitan coast, though very small, offers beautiful scenery and attractive beaches such as Xlendi, Marsalforn, Mġarr ix-Xini (where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie filmed their movie “By the Sea” in 2015) and last but not least the seaport of Mġarr. This natural beauty is also present in the natural trio of landmarks known as “It-Tieqa” (the Azure Window), “Il-Ġebla tal-General” (The General’s Rock) and “Il-Baħar magħluq (the Inland Sea), all at the same place called Id-Dwejra.
This natural beauty combines with the friendliness of the islanders who welcome every visitor in every season. Whilst the island is more calm and peaceful between autumn and spring, the summer months are more crowded but provide the extra attraction in village festas and street entertainment, an additional memorable experience for the visitor.
Gozo is just about 25 minutes ferry boat trip away from the Maltese port of Ċirkewwa. During this journey, one could also admire the very small and beautiful islands of Kemmuna and Kemmunett, which are normally inhabited by just one family. This is the place where the series Count of Montecristo was filmed. In summer, these islands are an attraction for both Maltese and tourists who want to spend some time in a peaceful setting.

Gozo Guided Cycling Tour By Gozo Segway
Gozo Guided Cycling Tour By Gozo Segway.
Gozo Segway also offer guided e-bike tours or will rent you an e-bike, your choice. We chose the guided e-bike tour and were given the choice of riding on road or off road, but we chose a mixture of both.
We also had a say in the route but these guys at Gozo Segway know best as they’re out every day and are experts on every nook and cranny in Gozo.
The modest charge for the day included Helmets, Insurance, Tour Guide, Photos, Traditional lunch and refreshments.
We were met at the Mgarr Harbour ferry terminal by Kevin, our guide for this Gozo e-bike tour experience, who quickly went through the drill on how to ride an e-bike, the controls and safety matters and off we went.
We had chosen a clockwise route from the Mgarr Harbour ferry port, so we rode up the hill through Mgarr passing Lourdes Chapel and at Chambray turned left off the road past Fort Chambray and headed down the track towards the sea at Xatt LAhmar, a small harbour with salt pans.
We encountered a muddy path here as it had rained all day on the day before our ride, but this was our choice of route and it proved to be quite an adventure.
Kevin our guide was taking photos of our e-bike ride for all of the route which he would send to us right after the ride had ended. Just as well, as the views were thrilling all the way. Kevin is very knowledgeable about Gozo history and kept us informed of where we were and the history behind the place.
From the sea we rode uphill again to the road, turning west through Xewkija before riding down to the sea again at Mgarr ix-Xini harbour where we stopped for a break.
Next, along the spectacular Sannat cliffs and Sanap clifftops to the beautiful Xlendi Bay where lunch was provided by Kevin when we sat on the sea wall and watched shoals of fish swimming in the clear blue waters of Xlendi Bay.
We now rode towards San Lawrenz and the dive site of the Inland Sea before the long ride up to the North Gozo coast at Wied IIMielah with its rock arch.
Now Eastwards passing Reqqa Point and the famous Salt Pans to Marsalforn, South again to Victoria then straight down to Mgarr Harbour ferry port for our return to the Malta mainland.

Based in Xewkija but very happy to pick you up from the Ferry from Malta. Drop them an email at info@gozosegway.com
True to his word, Kevin our guide on this Gozo Guided Cycling Tour By Gozo Segway sent us photos and video of the ride as soon as we returned back to our hotel.
We cannot exagerate how thrilling this Gozo Guided Cycling Tour was, and can highly recommend it to everyone. Thank you Kevin.
Remember, Gozo Segway have a choice of e-bike routes already planned, so just leave it to them if you’re not familiar with Gozo and you won’t be disappointed, just as they have a choice of 7 areas in Gozo if you choose to go on a Segway adventure.

My Choice - Sannat & Ta Cenc, Gozo: Pastoral & Nutcracker
Sannat is a small village in the island of Gozo. Close by there are the famous Cliffs of Ta' Cenc and the very old Dolmens. We'll visit them while listening to:
Photos by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech.
1. Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral) 5th Movement. This is one of the 9 symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven and it can be defined as a hymn to Nature. Beethoven loved Nature and many times he used to go out for walks to the countryside. It was completed in 1808.
2. Coda-Apotheosis from the Nutcracker Ballet Suite, plays the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This is a truly beautiful selection from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite - Apotheosis. The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. I think this piece of music is divine.
Apotheosis (from Greek ἀποθεόων), refers to the exaltation of a subject to divine level. The term has meanings in theology, where it refers to a belief, and in art, where it refers to a genre.
------------------------------
Sannat, a village in the southern part of Gozo and has a population of approx 2,400 persons. This village is popular for its very high cliffs, ancient cart ruts, temples and dolmens, and rich fauna and flora.
The parish church is dedicated to St. Margaret Martyr has a very good altar piece by Stefano Erardi, a famed local painter. The village feast of St. Margaret is celebrated each year around the third week of July.
The present parish church was rebuilt and enlarged in 1860.
L-Imramma Temple found at Ta' Cenc within the the limits of Sannat is a primitive type prehistoric temple made up of a sort of an oval court with a series of more or less oval rooms to the north. Other interesting remains are three dolmens, a horizontal slab of limestone supported on three sides by blocks of stone standing on end.
Lying low by Ta' Cenc, one could admire the natural beauty of Hanzira valley which leads down to Mgarr ix-Xini Bay. The pebbly beach of this bay is mostly popular with divers and in fact the wreck of the once Malta-Gozo ferryboat Xlendi rests on the seabed, a few hundred metres away from the bay's outer stretches
After World War 2 Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, then Princess, stayed in a house called The Lace House located in a small square in Ta' Sannat called Pjazza Tax-Xelina.
If you visit Malta, make sure you visit our sister island of Gozo - you won't regret it.
