Leshan Buddha, near Chengdu
Approaching the Leshan Buddha by boat. This enormous statue was carved out of the cliff face during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and is located at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in Sichuan province, China. Standing at 71 metres tall, it is the largest stone Buddha in the world.
Construction began in 713, in the hope that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that threatened ships along the river. Apparently, the huge contruction work resulted in so much stone being removed from the cliff face and deposited in the river below that the waters were indeed calmed as a result.

SUMMARY
=======
Sichuan (四川; formerly romanised as Szechuan or Szechwan), is a province in southwest China occupying most of the Sichuan Basin and the easternmost part of the Tibetan Plateau between the Jinsha River on the west, the Daba Mountains in the north, and the Yungui Plateau to the south. Sichuan's capital city is Chengdu. The population of Sichuan stands at 81 million.
In antiquity, Sichuan was the home of the ancient states of Ba and Shu. Their conquest by Qin strengthened it and paved the way for the First Emperor's unification of China under the Qin dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms era, Liu Bei's Shu was based in Sichuan. The area was devastated in the 17th century by Zhang Xianzhong's rebellion and the area's subsequent Manchu conquest, but recovered to become one of China's most productive areas by the 19th century. During the Second World War, Chongqing served as the temporary capital of the Republic of China, making it the focus of Japanese bombing. It was one of the last mainland areas to fall to the Communists during the Chinese Civil War and was divided into four parts from 1949 to 1952, with Chongqing restored two years later. It suffered gravely during the Great Chinese Famine of 1959–61 but remained China's most populous province until Chongqing Municipality was again separated from it in 1997.
The people of Sichuan speak a unique form of Mandarin, which took shape during the area's repopulation under the Ming. The family of dialects is now spoken by about 120 million people, which would make it the 10th most spoken language in the world if counted separately. The area's warm damp climate long caused Chinese medicine to advocate spicy dishes; the native Sichuan pepper was supplemented by Mexican chilis during the Columbian Exchange to form modern Sichuan cuisine, whose dishes—including Kung Pao chicken and Mapo tofu—have become staples of Chinese cuisine around the world.
Wanted Chongqing Businessman Sues Public Security Bureau

Chongqing businessman Li Jun was labeled as the head
of the Triads by former Chongqing Party Secretary Bo Xilai.
Recently, the company under his name filed law suit against
Shapingba Branch of Chongqing Public Security Bureau.
The lawsuit is for illegal seizure of the
company's official seal, and it's property.
Li Jun is currently hiding overseas, and
an arrest warrant for him is still in effect.
More than 30 people associated with Li, including
his relatives and former employees, have been
labeled as gangsters, and were sentenced in 2010.
On behalf of Li Jun, Luo Hao, a legal representative
of Chongqing Junfeng Real Estate Co., Ltd., filed
a lawsuit against Shapingba Branch of Chongqing
Municipal Public Security Bureau on February 28.
Beijing lawyer Li Zhuang, as the agent and
deputy general manager of the company, sent
forth two lawyers to deliver the indictment.
It was delivered to Chongqing Higher People's
Court and the Intermediate People's Court.
The High Court did not accept the appeal.
The Intermediate Court kept the appeal, but indicated
the acceptance is contingent upon a superior's approval.
According to the indictment, Li Jun requested canceling
Shapingba Public Security Bureau's two written decisions.
Li also requested confirmation that seizing the company's
official seal was illegal, to return 66.8 million yuan,
and to compensate for the loss of 69.57 million yuan.
Luo Hao, Chongqing Junfeng Real Estate:
During the investigation, they transferred
66.8 million yuan out the company's account.
There was no court decree. It was done by the
investigation team of the public security bureau.
Then, the Court determined Li Xiuwu's
income of 66.8 million yuan as illegal.
But, that was a bond company.
They transferred money out of our real estate
company, which had nothing to do with the case.
Luo Hao indicated Bo's policy of targeting gangsters
cost too much for the local governments to afford.
He believed that Bo Xilai confiscated
private assets to balance the books.
He said, Bo was targeting the entire Junfeng
Real Estate, not just the 66.8 million yuan.
Luo Hao: Their greatest intention was
to own the entire Junfeng Real Estate.
There are a few acres of land under Junfeng. With those
properties, they can sell for a couple of billion yuan.
That's the money they are after.
Li Jun was arrested on December 4
2009, on charges of allegedly bribery.
The Chongqing public security bureau asked
Li to confess that he was the triad boss.
He was forced to admit to committing crimes of
bribery, firearms trafficking, prostitution, loan-sharking
and supporting illegal religious organizations.
Li Jun was brutally tortured.
After weeks of torture, Li Jun was told that to be free from
more torture, he had to pay the military 40 million yuan.
This was to compensate a piece of land he had purchased.
In March 2010, Li Jun was released after paying the fine.
Police involved in the interrogation were
rewarded with 100,000 yuan from the military.
Li Jun is currently hiding overseas. His wife,
family members, and employees were arrested.
His brother and nephew who took over his assets were
sentenced to 18 years and 13 years in prison, respectively.
The rest were sentenced with sentences
of several months to several years.
Luo Hao indicated that Bo labeled Li Jun's company
as triad for the purpose of confiscating his assets.
Luo Hao: It is impossible to form a triad with
just a couple of people. Triad is an organization.
They purposely put together a couple of dozens
of people by including the company employees
and the security guards to make it look like a gang.
They charged the gang with a crime. That way it
becomes easy for them to seize the property.
Luo Hao said Bo Xilai planned to take over
the company through a managing company.
Wang Lijun's incident slowed down the progress.
After the 18th National Congress, things changed.
On September 30 last year, the official
seal was returned to the company.
At the end of November, the
company account was released.
Li Jun was one of the richest businessmen in Chongqing.
His investments, ranged from real estate, gas stations,
nightclubs, the financial industry, through to hotels.
He had annual revenue of about one billion yuan. His
estimated total asset at that time was about 4.5 billion yuan.

In China there is a big gap between rich and poor, many people do not have a home, we are all seeking a place to live and survive.

STORYLINE
Chinese state media say authorities have received 77 applications from people who want to protest in special areas set aside for demonstrations during the Olympics.
But no protests have actually taken place in three parks designated as special zones for a type of dissent that is usually banned in China but which Beijing said it would allow as long as tight regulations were followed.
The official Xinhua News Agency said Monday that some 149 people, including three foreigners, have submitted the applications since August 1. But the two-line Xinhua report did not say whether any had been approved or give any other details.
Beijing Olympic organisers also failed to provide any figures on Monday.
Wang Wei, vice president of the Beijing Organising Committee, said he had asked the relevant authorities but had still not received a response.
