Description: Mibu no Hana Taue is a Japanese agricultural ritual asking the rice deity to assure an abundant rice harvest. It takes place in two communities of Hiroshima Prefecture on the first Sunday of June after rice transplanting is completed. Villagers, cattle, an elder leader and colourfully dressed girls re-enact the stages of planting and transplanting a rice field specially reserved for this event. Participants sing accompanied by drums, flutes and small gongs. Transmission is ensured by the elders who also oversee the ritual's smooth execution.

A traditional art of kagura dance brings mortal and immortal together in a celebration of life. The gods in kagura appear very human, as they play, eat and even have affairs.

Kagura is now a popular youth culture.

Kagura is said to have originated from the time when the goddess Amenouzume danced to lure the sun goddess Amaterasu from the cave in which she enclosed herself offended by the misdeeds of Susanoo, her younger brother. Susanoo directed various boorish and tabooed actions against Amaterasu.

Due to Amaterasu´s hiding the universe was plunged into darkness and chaos. Seizing on the confusion evil thrived.

The gods discussed and held a wild party. When Amenouzume´s clothes fell off during her energetic dance, other gods applauded loudly. Curious about the merriment, Amaterasu peeped out of the cave.

Amenouzume held up a mirror and told Amaterasu that we are celebrating for joy because a nobler goddess than you. Amaterasu emerged to see the new goddess but saw her own reflection. Tajikarao promptly shut the stone door behind Amaterasu and
sealed it with shimenawa, sacred straw rope. The sun shine returned.

Nishindai-Kagura

Here is an introduction to “Nishindai-Kagura”, which are both traditional performing arts of Kawachinagano.

Nishindai Kagura (Shinto music and dance) is an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kawachinagano.
The local lord, Honda Tadamune was reposted from Nishidai governor’s office to Kanbe in Ise in 1732. People dedicated this Kagura at Nishindai-jinja shrine to honor the memory of the lord, which is believed to be its origin.
This Kagura is a typical Ise Kagura style and is consisted of ten different dances; “Suzu-no-mai”, “Ken-no mai”, “Shiho-gake”, “Uta-tsurugi”, “Yoshino-mai”, “Ohgi-no-mai”, “Tama-no-mai”, “Kamiki-mai”, “Shira-jishi” and “Hana-no-mai”.
The person who takes the part of the lion and the people play the music wear the same costume, the indigo colored kimono and the brownish-red divided skirts. Only the clown called Maneshi wears different costume.
This Kagura is performed in front of the main shrine on the eve of the forest festival of Nishindai-jinja shrine every year.
It is performed on the second Friday of October every year.
