Richys bar and Bistro Clonakilty
Richys Bar and Bistro, Clonakilty, Fun and Funky Restaurant in the heart of West Cork
Clonakilty Co. Cork Ireland
Clonakilty is situated within the heartland of West Cork and is renowned for its beautiful streetscapes, colourful shop fronts and selection of fine hotels, restaurants, guesthouses, pubs and cafes. The narrow streets and lanes of the town open into elegant squares; a notable feature of the town is the 18th century Emmet Square, which is surrounded by some beautiful houses with impressive Georgian doorways.
Walking along the narrow streets of the town one can see Harringtons Butchers, where the famous Clonakilty black pudding is still manufactured today to the original recipe that was first prepared in 1880. The colourful shop fronts and hanging baskets of flowers are striking as one strolls through the town.
There are many historic buildings to be seen in the area such as the Post Office, which is housed in an old Presbyterian church. Also worthy of mention is the national Michael Collins Memorial Statue, which was unveiled on August 22nd 2002, in tribute to one of the greatest military and political leaders in Irish History. Not far from there, just off the main coastal road to Kinsale, is the restored site of an ancient fort called Lis na-gCon.
Clonakilty is an ideal holiday destination and an ideal base from which to tour West Cork. It is an area flavoured with some of West Cork's most spectacular scenery. There are some fantastic beaches around the area, such as Red Strand, where one can see the famous Galley Head lighthouse. There are also many wonderful towns such as Timoleague, Courtmacsherry and Rosscarbery just a short drive from Clonakilty.

Michael Collins sings Dear Old Skibbereen
Liam Neeson as the Irish revolutionary is asked to sing a traditional folk song about the potato famine & Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848, focused on a village in County Cork, where he was from. Directed by Neil Jordan, the 1996 biopic was the highest grossing film ever in Ireland upon its release, and topical as it's the Easter Rising 100th anniversary this year. Aidan Quinn & Julia Roberts also in scene.
Verse lyrics: O well do I remember the bleak December day
The landlord and the sheriff came to drive us all away
They set my roof on fire with their cursed foreign spleen
And that's another reason why I left old Skibbereen
Michael Collins | Who's Who in the Irish Revolution Episode 2
Michael Collins stands as one of the most important figures in Irish history. He would oversee the Dáil Loan, terrorise Dublin Castle and rise to the top of every organisation he was involved with. In this episode I take a look at his life leading up to the War of Independence, from his beginnings in London to the 1916 Rising to the creation of his intelligence network. Collins will feature in numerous future episodes and play a major role in the Irish Revolution.
