Lodi's Bechthold Vineyard
Camron King, Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission, will be co-hosting this fascinating look into one of Lodi's oldest and most unique vineyards with Kevin Phillips, VP of Operations for Phillips Farms and Michael David Winery, and Adam Mettler, Director of Wine Operations at Michael David Winery.
Located at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, Lodi is approximately 100 miles east of San Francisco and 35 miles south of Sacramento. A major winegrowing region since the 1850's, Lodi is home to over 100,000 acres of premium vineyards farmed by more than 750 growers. Planted in 1886 by Joseph Spenker, the 25-acre Bechthold Vineyard is the oldest producing vineyard in Lodi and one of the world's oldest Cinsault plantings. Farmed by Kevin Phillips, the vines in the Bechthold Vineyard are head trained, organically grown and dry farmed. Earlier this year, the Bechthold Vineyard was named Vineyard of the Year by the California State Fair's panel of wine professionals.
The 6th generation of the Phillips family to farm in the Lodi Appellation, Kevin has worked for the family since 2002. His duties consist of overseeing all of the farming operations for Phillips Farms which are comprised of over 750 acres of vineyards. He runs the grower relations side of the business which has over 65 growers from 7 appellations and more than 20 different varietals. He also does all of the logistics and scheduling for each harvest and works hand in hand with the talented winemaking team at Michael-David Winery. A huge proponent of sustainable farming, he helped transition all the family properties into the rigorous Lodi Rules for Sustainabilty Program and instituted Michael-David Winery as the first winery in California to pay bonuses to all of their growers who receive certification in the Lodi Rules Program. As a firm believer that great wines come from great grapes, he works very closely with all of Michael-David's growers to insure that they are paid well for producing the best quality of grapes possible.
A 5th generation Lodi winegrape grower, Adam Mettler completed multiple extension courses at the University of California, Davis and San Joaquin Delta College on winemaking by the age of 16. After creating multiple amateur gold medal-winning wines, Adam's family established Mettler Family Vineyards. Their first release - the 1999 Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon - was selected to be on Wine Spectator's list of Top 100 California Cabernet's. After graduation from CSU Fresno in 2002, Adam joined the winemaking team at Fenestra winery. In 2005, he was asked to join the Michael-David winemaking team. Adam is currently the lead person for all aspects of the production winery including the direction of all wine brands, the winemaking team, the full time staff of 15 employees on site, as well as coordinating logistics throughout five off-site facilities. Approaching the 10th harvest at Michael-David winery Adam continues to handle all winemaking for the Mettler Family Vineyards brand as well.
Today we will taste through these Cinsault wines from the Bechthold Vineyard in the following order:

A look at how the earthquake has damaged the Napa Valley wine industry
Businesses in California's wine capital mopped up thousands of dollars in high-end vintages on Monday, after an earthquake caused 1 billion US dollars in damage, according to official estimates.
In Napa Valley, two hotels and 12 wineries were still closed on Monday, as well as many of the businesses downtown, local officials said, amid a rush to get the tourist hotspot back in shape for the summer's final holiday weekend.
With the dust still settling from Sunday's magnitude-6.0 quake, centered near the city of Napa, government and tourism officials encouraged visitors to keep flocking to the charming towns, tasting rooms, restaurants and spas that drive the Napa Valley economy.
While cleanup will take time and broken water mains remained a problem, they said, the worst damage and disruption was confined to the city's downtown, where a post office, library and a 141-room hotel were among 150 homes and buildings deemed unsafe to occupy.
The strongest earthquake to hit the San Francisco Bay Area in a quarter of a century also caused several injuries, triggered fires that destroyed or damaged six mobile homes, and ruptured gas lines.

Robert Palmer - Bad Case of Loving You Doctor, Doctor {HD}
Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) is a 1978 song, written and originally recorded by Moon Martin, and later sung a year later by Robert Palmer. The song became one of Palmer's hit songs in his career.
Moon Martin originally recorded the song in 1978. Martin's record label Capitol Records released the song in the United Kingdom and Spain as a stand-alone vinyl single but inserted the song into the United States release of Martin's album Shots from a Cold Nightmare. His original recording did not enter the music charts.
A year later the song appeared on Robert Palmer's 1979 album Secrets. In Palmer's home country, the United Kingdom, the song debuted and peaked at #61 on the UK Singles Chart on 7 July 1979.
The version became more successful in other countries. In the United States, Palmer's version reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, #10 on the Cash Box Top 100, and #1 on the Canadian RPM chart in 1979. The Palmer version was remixed with heavier guitars and drums for his greatest hits collection Addictions: Volume 1. The song was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 22nd Annual Grammy Awards. In the Netherlands, it reached #2 on the Dutch Top 40 chart on 4 August 1979, five weeks after its debut (7 July) on the chart. In New Zealand, it reached #20 in the Top 40 Singles Chart on the week of 7 October 1979, five weeks after its debut at #43 on the chart (9 September).
The song begins with a stanza written in typical 8 bar blues structure & chord sequence, and then progresses to a 10 bar blues chorus. Other uses of mixing bar structure include Bird Dog, recorded by The Everly Brothers and written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in 1957, which has a 12 bar blues stanza and an 8 bar blues chorus. Bad Case of Loving You, however, is an example of mixing the rarer 10 bar blues structure in charted country compositions.
Billboard reviewer Ed Harrison praised Palmer's rendition as the kind of intelligent rock tune.
This song was written by Moon Martin (John David Martin - he got the name Moon because he often used it in his lyrics), who released the original version on his 1978 album Shots From a Cold Nightmare. Martin is a singer/guitarist/songwriter from Oklahoma who made his way to California in the late '60s with his band Southwind. When the group broke up in 1971, Martin took on studio work. He took up with Linda Ronstadt, and played on her self-titled album (they lived together at her farm house in Topanga Canyon for a while). He nearly joined some of Ronstadt's other backing musicians in a little band called the Eagles, but ended up a solo artist and signed a deal with Capitol Records.
Shots From a Cold Nightmare was his debut album. It got some good reviews but went nowhere on the charts. A song called Hot Nite In Dallas was chosen as a single, but Bad Case Of Loving You was only given limited release in Europe.
Robert Palmer heard the song when he was being driven to one of his shows by a rep from his label, who played it for him. Palmer included it in his set and got a great response, so he recorded it for his Secrets album.
American Winemaker Series: Tegan Passalacqua
The heritage of California wine unfurls across its benchlands as an encyclopedic array of gnarly old vines. They tell the stories of pioneering immigrants – and, in turn, the stories of their homelands. They quietly stand, many in plain sight, speaking of terroir in a time before appellations. Few winemakers have been as adamant in the defense of these living time capsules – and as progressive in sharing their stories – as Tegan Passalacqua.
A third generation son of Napa, but the first winemaker of his family, Tegan navigates the state’s diverse Zinfandel plantings as if they were in his childhood backyard (and some, more or less, are). He does so as the winemaker of Turley Wine Cellars, a title that falls short of fully describing the enormity of his endeavor. With an unwavering commitment to organic viticulture and the preservation of old vines – tenets of the Turley ethos since its founding in 1993 – Tegan oversees more than fifty vineyards in twelve counties, many of which are singularly celebrated in one of Turley’s some three dozen bottlings.
Tegan’s preservationist hunger does not end with his workday. There is Kirschenmann, a vineyard he owns in Mokelumne River, Lodi, which was planted to ungrafted, head-trained Zinfandel in 1915. There is the Historic Vineyard Society, an organization committed to the preservation of historic vineyards through education, of which Tegan is a co-founder.
And then there is Sandlands. A quiet project enwrapped in cultish fever, Sandlands is a rigorous and ongoing engagement with the head-trained, dry-farmed, own-rooted, old vines of California. It is a catalog of Tegan’s tireless study, a vehicle for his insatiable pursuit of a future for the past.

With more than 100 varieties currently being cultivated, Lodi offers a diverse portfolio of wines. While long renowned for its high-quality Zinfandel production, including an estimated 2,000 acres of pre-Prohibition own rooted vines, the area also produces some of the most versatile, food friendly varieties in the world, including mouthwatering Picpoul and Kerner, juicy Carignane and delicate old vine Cinsault, complex Iberian, Italian and Alsatian styles and beyond, many of which pair perfectly with the often tricky cornucopia of flavors at the Thanksgiving table.
The region owes much of its recent success to the increase in critical and consumer attention paid to Lodi-designate wines. In fact, the past 10-15 years has seen astronomical growth in demand for Lodi wines, as well as in tourism to the wine region. Today, Lodi is home to over 85 boutique wineries specializing in small-lot, handmade wines that have garnered major awards at domestic and international wine competitions. In addition, Lodi is one of the leading wine regions when it comes to sustainable viticulture. The Lodi Winegrape Commission created Lodi Rules™, California's first third-party-certified sustainable winegrowing program, which recently won Governor Jerry Brown's annual Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) - the highest environmental award in the state of California - for its mission to address major environmental, economic and social challenges facing California agricultural industry.
