Diana Thorneycroft, Michael Gibson Gallery
Pre-Order: 'West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson @
Diana Thorneycroft is a Winnipeg artist who has exhibited various bodies of work across Canada, the United States and Europe, as well as in Moscow, Tokyo and Sydney. She is the recipient of numerous awards including an Assistance to Visual Arts Long-term Grant from the Canada Council, several Senior Arts Grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and a Fleck Fellowship from the Banff Centre for the Arts.
Her work was the subject of national radio documentaries and a CBC national documentary for television. Thorneycroft's photo-based exhibition, The Body, its lesson and camouflage was on an eight city tour from 2000 to 2002. A book by the same name was published.
Thorneycroft's work was included in the 2002 released Phaidon Press publication Blink, which presents the work of 100 rising stars in photography. They were selected by 10 world-class curators, each proposing 10 photographers who they consider to have emerged and broken new ground in the last five years.
Diana Thorneycroft Group of Seven Awkward Moments exhibition was listed as one of Canadian Art Magazine's Top Ten best exhibitions of 2008. Reproductions of paintings by Tom Thomson, Emily Carr and the Group of Seven were used as backdrops to dioramas that Thorneycroft constructed and then photographed. By combining well known Canadian landscape paintings, which some suggest are the visual equivalent of our National Anthem, with scenes of accidents, disasters and instances of poor judgment, she acknowledges and satirizes the mythology and icons of Canadian culture.

INTERFACE features new landscape and portrait paintings that explore human emotion and our relationship to web and mobile based technologies. Paired together, the serene landscapes and emotionally charged portraits, articulate two perspectives of a similar experience. They activate each other, creating a dialogue about who we are as humans and reveal aspects of our human psychology.

Ian Dejardin - Is Tom Thomson's The West Wind Unfinished?
Director at Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, UK weighs in on Tom Thomson's The West Wind.
Video Transcript:
The West Wind unfinished? We can never know for certain but I think it's unfinished and the reason I think it's unfinished is because of the inconsistency of the paint surface. The waves are beautifully finished, the sky is beautifully finished, but the tree is blocked in only and it's too simple, he wants that line but it's just too raw. I don't think Tom Thomson would have left it like that.

The Flora and Ian Tripp Collection: Art, Friends, Memories
April 5 – May 26, 2018
Opening Reception: April 8 from 2 to 4 pm
Remarks: 3 pm followed by a discussion on collecting by Mr. Tripp and Jennie Kraehling, Associate Director, Gibson Gallery
Representing over 40 years of collecting, this exhibition demonstrates one couple’s approach to assembling an art collection based largely on longstanding friendships with the artists.
Encouraged by former McIntosh Gallery director, Maurice Stubbs, Ian and the late Flora Tripp began collecting art soon after their arrival in London in the 1960s. They attended exhibition openings and made a point of acquiring the artwork highlighted on the invitation card. Over the decades, they added international works discovered on their travels but the core representation remained local artists and friends including Eric Atkinson, Roly Fenwick, and Maurice Stubbs. Almost the entire collection will be displayed in celebration of its future bequest to McIntosh Gallery.
