Guadalest, Spain
El Castell de Guadalest or briefly Guadalest is a Valencian town and municipality located in a mountainous area of the comarca of Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, Spain. Guadalest has an area of 16 km² and, according to the 2002 census, a total population of 189 inhabitants.
Guadalest
El Castell de Guadalest, known usually as Guadalest, is a small town in Valencia, in a mountainous part of the comarca of Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, Spain. Guadalest covers an area of 16 sq km, and has a population of around 200 inhabitants. Guadalest is approximately 25 kilometres inland from Benidorm along CV-70 road.
Surrounded by the Aitana, Serella & Xorta Mountains the village was a strategic military stronghold with fortifications. dating back to 715AD and the period of Moorish occupation of Spain. It has a long history. It saw action during the Moorish occupation, a strong earthquake in 1644 seriously damaged the fort and houses of the village, and during the War of the Spanish Succession, it again suffered serious damage from a mine explosion.
The town grew up around the fortress. Originally the population lived within the protection of the castle walls. The castle can only be entered by one small tunnel cut through the rock at the San Jose gate. The area inside the walls includes the ancient city dungeon, the bell tower, Saint Josep castle, the Orduña House, parish church and the Moorish fortified building called Alcozaiba.
The houses the Moors lived in then were built outside the San Jose gate. This part of the town, el Arrabal, with its little streets and squares is where the majority of the shops, craft shops, museums and restaurants are today.
The river Guadalest flows through the area and has been dammed to form a spectacular a reservoir below the town.
Guadalest has been declared a 'Monument of Historical and Artistic Value' and is a major tourist attraction in Spain.

Guadalest , Spain 4.6.2015
Guadalest is one of places we visited during our holiday in this summer. It's small and amazing village up in the mountain. There are many museums, shops and restaurantes, and the village lives mostly by tourism. Down is the lake and you can make a tour round the lake by the boat when it's in traffic. The village is worth seeing place.

Guadalest (El Castell de Guadalest) Costa Blanca Spain (Tour)
This is a gem of town nestled high in the mountains is located behind Benidorm. This is one of Spain's most visited towns and once you are there you will realise why.
Located on the CV70 road which connects the town with Benidorm this small village sits precariously perched on the pinnacle of a granite mountain.
It is home to a small population of only 200 people and is entirely dedicated to tourism.
The town is home to a small selection of restaurants and a variety of shops most selling local products and souvenirs. It also boasts a small selection of mini museums.
However the town's main feature is its position. The views are what draw most visitors.
Have your camera ready to take some stunning photographs of the mountains which dominate this region of Spain.

Guadalest Costa Blanca
Located on the CV-70, 25 km from Altea, is the village of Guadalest. Occupying one of the most stunning positions in Spain, this small village is precariously perched on the pinnacle of a granite mountain, giving fabulous views across the valley carved out by the River from which the village takes its name.
Getting to Guadalest by the twisting road that climbs ever upwards, passing through the village of Polop, is almost as spectacular as the position of the village, but the breathtaking views make the drive worthwhile even for the more nervous passengers!
On reaching Guadalest you can see why the Moors, who constructed castles to defend the area, considered this place a site of strategic importance.
Some of these castles were unconquerable and the remains of several can still be seen today, even though they were bombarded in the 18th century during the Spanish war of Succession.
However the building you will see on most of the postcards is the whitewashed bell tower of Penon de la Alcala which seems to cling to the mountain face.
Intriguingly the old village and castle is accessed through a tunnel carved from the rock and when you reach the other end and see the ancient houses, you seem to have been transported to another age.
View from the top of Guadalest Castle
Guadalest has plenty of museums, so you can learn more about its history, little crafts shops and places to buy a souvenir of your visit. Costing only a few euros the visit through the tunnel to the village is definitely worthwhile as the castle tour (starting at 10am) takes in the dungeon (great for the kids) and offers fantastic views across the valley from cobbled footpaths and lookout points.
The population of only 200 people now dedicates itself entirely to tourism, hence some of the area's best museums being located here. If you want to be transported to another world when land was fiercely defended, don't miss a trip to the village of Guadalest!
