First Lady Melania Trump Visits Microsoft in Redmond, Washington
Chinese President Visits Microsoft Headquarters, Calls for Cooperation in Technical Innovation
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday visited the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington State, and called for cooperation in technical innovation.
Xi and wife Peng Liyuan arrived at the Microsoft headquarters at about 15:15, and were warmly greeted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, founder Bill and wife Melinda Gates and chairman John Thompson, as well as the staff.
Xi said that Microsoft has rapidly expanded its business in China and promoted the development of the information technology industry in China, since it started operation in China in 1995.
Currently, technical innovation has become an important driving force for China's economic growth, which brings great business opportunities to the U.S. science and technology enterprises, including Microsoft, he added.
China will adhere to the reform and open-up policy, and continue to welcome foreign enterprises to operate in China, said Xi.
Nadella briefed Xi and his wife on Microsoft's development situation.
In the Microsoft's envisioning center, engineers showed them three-dimensional HoloLens goggles, the U.S. meteorological data visualization system, and ecosystem hardware products and ecosystem products the Chinese enterprises manufactured with Microsoft technologies.
Xi carefully watched the products and said he hopes Microsoft could deepen cooperation with its Chinese partners to produce more smart products that can benefit people's lives, and bring convenience to the public.
Xi also met with the representatives who were attending the China-U.S. Internet Forum. He noted that with the rapid development of information technology, a secure, stable and prosperous cyber space plays an increasingly important role in the peace and development of individual countries and the world.
China advocates the building of a peaceful, secure, open and cooperative cyber space and maintains that every country should institute its own Internet policy in line with its own national conditions, Xi said.
Noting that both China and the United States are major countries in the Internet sphere, where they have important common interests and room for cooperation, he suggested that the two countries carry out constructive talks on cyber issues on the basis of mutual respect and trust.
In so doing, he added, the two sides can create a new bright spot in bilateral cooperation and enable the cyber space to bring more benefits to the two nations and the people across the world.
During the visit, Xi accepted a 3D-printed ship model of the Liulinhai from Microsoft. Liulinhai is a historic Chinese ship that docked in Seattle in 1979, the year China and the United States officially established diplomatic relations. Xi presented a young dawn redwood tree as a gift to the Global Innovation Exchange, a new science and technology institute jointly founded by the Qinghua University and the University of Washington.
Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan also met with Bill and Melinda Gates at the Microsoft headquarters.
Xi arrived in Seattle on Tuesday morning, starting his state visit to the United States.
Xi will fly to Washington on Thursday for a summit with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House, where he will be honored with a 21-gun salute and a state dinner.
After that, he will spend three days in New York City attending a series of summits at the United Nations headquarters marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the global body and give a speech to the UN General Assembly on Sept 28.

Why Amazon is moving worldwide operations organization to Bellevue WA (2020)
Over the next few years Amazon will move its worldwide operations to nearby Bellevue from Seattle. The Worldwide Operations Center for Amazon was set to move to New York but when negotiations fell apart, Bellevue, WA became the destination. Watch this video as Sean Reynolds, the owner of Summit Properties NW and Reynolds & Kline Appraisal takes a walk from the Downtown Bellevue Park to a couple of blocks away where Amazon has its offices located and is planning major office development and expansion. Find out what Bellevue WA looks like from the street level and why so many people want to work and live in this city.
Amazon plans to move its worldwide operations team to its new buildings in Bellevue, which is a carefully planned and well-functioning suburban city. Expedia & T-Mobile are headquartered there, and Microsoft, headquartered in nearby Redmond, has a hefty presence. Now, Bellevue will also house Amazon's worldwide operations team--the people who oversee all of Amazon's logistics. They are responsible for managing the company's 175 fulfillment centers and the quarter of a million people who work in them, its Delivery Service Partners initiative, it's fleet of trucks, and it's fleet of airplanes. If the company ever makes good on its promise to someday deliver packages by drone, this team will oversee those too. It's considered a key group within Amazon, and some observers believe that in time it could employ about 25,000 people--as many people as the company's planned second headquarters in Northern Virginia.
The move makes a lot of sense from Amazon's point of view. Bellevue is nearby, someplace where the company can still draw on Seattle tech talent (and maybe poach some more from its new neighbor Microsoft). But Bellevue is not as badly congested with traffic as Seattle, and its leadership is very business-friendly.
In fact, Bellevue's leadership is ecstatic. After GeekWire broke the story, mayor John Chelminiak issued a statement that ended, Welcome home, Amazon! This is a reference to the fact that Amazon got its start in the garage of a Bellevue home. But not everyone else is pleased.

Driving Downtown - Bellevue 4K - Seattle USA
Driving Downtown - Bellevue Washington USA - Season 1 Episode 18.
Starting Point: NE 8th St .
Bellevue is a city in the Eastside region of King County, Washington, United States, across Lake Washington from Seattle. As Seattle's largest suburb, Bellevue has variously been characterized as an edge city, a boomburb, or satellite city.[5][6] The city had a population of 122,363 at the 2010 census.
Prior to 2008, downtown Bellevue underwent rapid change, with many high rise projects under construction, and was relatively unaffected by the economic downturn. It is currently the second largest city center in Washington state with over 35,000 employees and 5,000 residents.[7] Based on per capita income, Bellevue is the 6th wealthiest of 522 communities in the state of Washington.[8] In 2008, Bellevue was named number 1 in CNNMoney's list of the best places to live and launch a business,[9] and in 2010 was again ranked as the 4th best place to live in America.[10] The name Bellevue is French for beautiful view.[11] In 2014, Bellevue was ranked as the 2nd best place to live by USA Today.[12]
Recurring cultural events
Bellevue is the site of the popular annual Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair (originally Pacific Northwest Arts and Crafts Fair), held since 1947 at the end of July. The biennial Bellevue Sculpture Exhibition draws thousands of visitors to the Downtown Park to view up to 46 three-dimensional artworks from artists around the country. In celebration of its strawberry farming history, Bellevue holds an annual Strawberry Festival.[35] The Bellevue 24-Hour Relay has also been hosted every July in Bellevue Downtown Park.
Places of interest
The Bellevue Arts Museum first opened in 1975, then moved to Bellevue Square in 1983. In 2001, the museum moved into its own building, designed by Steven Holl. The museum subsequently ran into financial difficulties and was forced to close to the public in 2003. After a lengthy fundraising campaign, a remodel, and a new mission to become a national center for the fine art of craft and design, the museum reopened on June 18, 2005 with an exhibition of teapots.[36] The Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art - now closed - contained one of the largest doll collections in the world—more than a thousand dolls—displayed on two floors of a Victorian-style building.[37] The KidsQuest Children's Museum is located in Marketplace @ Factoria. The museum's primary visitors are mothers and care givers with children from pre-crawlers to 12 years of age. Its 10,000-square-foot (930 m2) space houses play and discovery areas, exhibits, offices, educational activities and classroom space. Near Interstate 405 is Meydenbauer Center, a convention center that brings corporate meetings and charity events to the downtown area. Meydenbauer also includes a 410-seat theater which attracts operas, ballets, and orchestral performances.[38]
Sports and recreation
Since the 1970s, the city has taken an active role in ensuring that its commercial development does not overwhelm its natural land and water resources.[39] Today, the Bellevue Parks and Community Services Department manages more than 2,500 acres (10 km2) of parks and open spaces, including the Downtown Park and the Bellevue Botanical Garden, as well as several playgrounds, beach parks, and trails. More than 5,500 Bellevue residents participate in volunteer activities through this department annually.[40]
Bellevue was home to the American Basketball Association team, the Bellevue Blackhawks. The Blackhawks in 2005, despite being ranked 13th in the league, made it to the championship game in front of 15,000 fans in Little Rock, Arkansas.[41] The team has been inactive since 2006.[42]
Supreme Court to consider major digital privacy case on Microsoft email storage
Welcome to Purple Sky News! All the news you probably missed but shouldn't have. Here at Purple Sky News we bring the news that matters. Without further ado, here's todays story: Supreme Court to consider major digital privacy case on Microsoft email storage By Robert Barnes October 16 at 7:23 PM The Supreme Court on Monday accepted a second important case on digital privacy, agreeing to hear a dispute between the federal government and Microsoft about emails stored overseas. The justices increasingly have been called upon to settle legal battles between law enforcement and technology companies, and to interpret laws written before the technology revolution that now raise pertinent questions about privacy. The justices next month will hear a case involving prosecutors’ access to the historical data stored in cellphone tower records. Legal experts noted that the court accepted both that case and the one involving Microsoft even though there was no split among lower courts on the law underlying the decisions, something that usually happens before the Supreme Court gets involved. “It’s plausible that the splitless grants in both [cases] signal a recognition among the justices of the tremendous importance of digital evidence collection,” George Washington University law professor Orin Kerr wrote in a blog post. “Whatever the right answers are, the justices need to provide them.” An influential congressman and experts in their field discuss the delicate balance between security and individual liberty and the debate between public safety and privacy concerns. (Washington Post Live) The case the court accepted Monday began in 2013 when U.S. prosecutors got a warrant to access emails in a drug-trafficking investigation. It was served on Microsoft in Redmond, Wash. But the data sought was stored on its servers in Ireland. (The company has more than 100 centers in 40 countries.) Microsoft turned over information it had stored domestically but contended that U.S. law enforcement couldn’t seize evidence held in another country. It said that if it was forced to turn over such information, it would lead to claims from other countries about data stored here. A judge upheld the warrant, but a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit overturned the ruling. The full circuit then split evenly on whether that decision was correct, and one judge wrote that the Supreme Court needed to provide the ultimate answer. The Justice Department asked the justices to do just that and to reverse the lower court. It said that a “domestic recipient of a subpoena is required to produce specified materials within the recipient’s control, even if the recipient stores the materials abroad.” Thirty-three states also urged the court to take the case, U.S. v. Microsoft. They said that the decision has implications for other technology giants such as Google and Yahoo and that it was “remarkable” that the 2nd Circuit had held “that a private company has unfettered discretion to shield evidence of crime from law enforcement, simply by electronically sending that evidence out of the jurisdiction.” Deputy Solicitor General Jeffrey B. Wall told the court that “hundreds if not thousands of investigations of crimes — ranging from terrorism, to child pornography, to fraud — are being or will be hampered by the government’s inability to obtain electronic evidence.” But Microsoft contends that the Stored Communications Act of 1986 did not imagine a world in which “a technician in Redmond, Washington, could access a customer’s private emails stored clear across the globe.” In a blog posted after the court’s announcement, Microsoft president and chief legal officer Brad Smith wrote that the government’s position endangers privacy. “If the U.S. government can unilaterally use a warrant to seize emails outside the United States, what’s to stop other governments from acting unilaterally to seize emails stored inside the United States?” Smith wrote. “At a time when countries are rightly worried about foreign government hacking, the DOJ’s interpretation would open the door to accomplishing the same thing.” But the company had urged the court to stay out and allow Congress to amend the law, which Smith noted the Justice Department has asked Congress to do. “The current laws were written for the era of the floppy disk, not the world of the cloud,” Smith wrote. [U.S. battle over Microsoft emails could result in ‘global free-for-all’] The justices already are scheduled to consider in late November whether.....
