Entry from: Azrou, Morocco
Entry Title: Azrou middle Atlas mountains
Entry:
This will be 8 months since I was last trekking out of Azrou.
So I did a little more research to share with likeminded pro-poor travellers.I hope you'll find it informative.
So on the 29th of April I'M OFF! Yippy Got Tickets!
All for under £90!!!
Azrou is a picturesque market town nestled in the mid-Atlas mountains at an invigorating altitude of 1250m. Situated 56 miles (90 kilometres) south of Fez (only a 1 ¼ hour's drive) from Fez international airport.
Spring is a pleasant season in this region. May temperatures are between 10-25 °C. The Flora & Fauna is blooming in diverse scenic terrain and attracts vast arrays of bird species. This creates fantastic visuals & sounds, ideal for capturing on video or camera. Camping & trekking in the Mid-atlas Mountains is a unique experience from the hospitality of the locals to the remote trails you'll discover in pristine mountain surroundings.
Unlike Fez Azrou is very laidback and a great place to base yourself if you are into trekking off the beaten track above the Medina there are wooded slopes with varied trails leading up to plateaus. There are Lakes and ancient cedar & pine forests at 1700 metres, where the only inhabitants are Berber (Amazigh) shepherds and foresters who welcome all visitors.
This most hospitable market town's charming bustling medina is full of colour, aroma, restaurants, cafes, barbers, hairdressers, bespoke tailors/dressmakers and hammams (baths). It will enchant you with its bargain wares, carvings, spices, rugs, jewellery, and leather.
The endemic cedar (Cedrus atlantica) ecosystem is estimated as 100,000 hectares the largest concentration of cedar in North Africa and the western Mediterranean.
The forests is shared with the Holm oak (Quercus ballota) which characterizes the lower forest, spilling out onto vast fertile plateaux which host small Berber (Amazigh) ancestral & community settlements all of whom welcome visitors with their unique brand of traditional hospitality.
The Azrou region hosts one of the worlds largest population of the Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus) this species is currently limited to forest areas in Morocco and Algeria, its the only primate north of the Sahara desert.

Azrou May 2010 Morocco Unexplored went Pay As You Go!
Chris, John, Ruth & Veronica from Cardiff were our first Pay As You Go guests who chose to go trekking, wild camping and bird watching throughout the middle Atlas mountain forests Morocco.
The video was shot on a 5 hour circuit Chris & John setting out on foot from our bureau/salon in the Azrou Medina looking forward to a 1 hour ascent, whereas Ruth & Veronica chose to take a 15 minuet drive above Azrou to another descending route so as to photograph Barbary macaques.
We all rendezvoused after 2 hours and then relaxed for a 1½ hour in a scenic clearing overlooking Azrou for a picnic & Moroccan tea.
Batteries charged we all zig zaged downhill through the Holm Oak forest following donkey trails, wadis and streams back into Azrou for Hearty Dinner. Please see our website for more details
