Middle Head Trail - Cape Breton Nova Scotia | 2019
The Middle Head Trail along with Cape Smokey make up the inlet for the Ingonish beach. Ingonish is nestled into the south east corner of Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
The trail itself sits on the beautiful peninsula that juts out a few kilometers from shore, and is very distinguishable atop the adjacent Franey Mountain.
Middle Head Trail is approximately 5km long, and although scenic it is beginner friendly, as the trail is well used and rises in elevation are small.
Middle Head Trail sits past the Keltic Lodge on the peninsula and as such it can get busy. We set out at 8:30am and met only a few people but on the way back the parking lot was almost completely full.
If you have the chance I would recommend hiking Middle Head early morning and plan to be at the edge of the trail for sunrise. Middle Head faces east and this would be one hell of a way to start your morning.

Cabot Trail: Cape Smokey, Middle Head, Ingonish Scenic Drive
Some of the most impressive scenery along the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island is on the east side. This drive takes you from the look off at Cape Smokey northbound, to the excellent hike at Middle Head, then on through Ingonish, and to Green Cove, ending at Neils Harbour.

I made this trip in early October, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Middle Head Trail – Cape Breton Highlands National Park (Aug 15, 2018)
Hiking Trails of Cape Breton - Cape Breton Highlands Park: Middle Head
Middle Head is a quite short, and relatively easy, but hike. However, its location, extending seaward and spliting Ingonish Bay in the middle, makes it one not to miss.
Details of this trail will be profiled in Hiking Trails of Nova Scotia, 9th edition.

Franey Trail - Cape Breton Nova Scotia | 2019
Just beyond the shores of Ingonish Nova Scotia, at the south east side of the Cabot Trail lies the trail head for the Franey Trail.
This is a moderate climb of approximately 350m, that ends with scenic views of the Keltic Lodge on Middle Head, as well as Cape Smokey.
Franey Trail is a loop trail around 8km in length and although the small parking lot was full we only bumped into 6-8 people on the mountain.
It took us 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete with stopping at the top. The way down is easy on a service road where you will pass a small peaceful lake.
In Nova Scotia especially in Cape Breton, the wild blueberries are abundant at this time of year, and saw a lot through out Franey Trail. The blueberries were also abundant in the heaps of bear scat that was littered along the path. We didn't run into any bears but the amount of fresh bear shit had us talking louder than normal. We also saw an abundance of moose droppings and tracks.
The vistas at the top of Franey Mountain are totally worth the hike up. Just be careful of ground hornets as I was stung multiple times in the legs at different locations on the trail.

INGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA DRONE COMPILATION
Here are some shots from Ingonish, Nova Scotia in the Cape Breton Highlands. Ingonish is divided into 5 smaller communities and this video includes footage throughout the area.
It is important to note that parts of Ingonish are located within the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Drone flying is not permitted inside the park unless you have special permission. If you plan to fly in the area please make sure it is outside the park - where there are plenty of places to fly.

Cabot Trail: Pleasant Bay to Ingonish, Cape Breton Island
Enjoy the scenic drive along the northern and eastern sides of the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. This drive begins at my B&B in Pleasant Bay, and heads east, then south along the Cabot Trail, ending at the Franey Trail hiking trailhead. It's a great hike, I highly recommend it.
