A guardian dog for penguins? That's right! Oddball, the Maremma sheepdog, helped protect a dwindling penguin population from marauding foxes that managed to reduce a 20,000 strong penguin population to only 27 chicks. Her offspring are set to do the same. Watch their sensational story!

Penguin Protection Dogs
They say dogs are man's best friend. But on Middle Island in Victoria dogs and penguins are even closer than that. Some specially trained Maremma dogs have the job of protecting local penguins from foxes there. We caught up with them as a new puppy recruit joined the team.

The penguin protecting puppy in this story needs a name! Warrnambool council is running a competition to select his name but you’d better get in quick, entries close on Friday.

The Middle Island Maremma Project operates as a community partnership between Warrnambool City Council and Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Group. This innovative project aims to increase the penguin numbers on Middle Island which is just off the coast of Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. By managing the introduction maremma guardian dogs on to the island breeding pairs have increased and fox attacks have reduced. You can take a tour to Middle Island through summer. Oddball - Shane Jacobson Interview
DOG'S BEST FRIEND - Oddball star Shane Jacobson explains why dogs are the best people.
If you thought you knew what a dog lover sounded like, listen to Shane Jacobson sing the praises of the Mareema breed while spruiking his lovely family film Oddball.
Set in Warrnambool and based on a true story, the film tells of chicken farmer Allan Swampy Marsh (played by Jacobson) who retasks his chicken-protecting dog Oddball to protect a local colony of penguins from the foxes that have all-but-exterminated them.
Best-known for his performance in the classic 2006 comedy Kenny, Jacobson had been associated with the film for about six years and is glad the film is coming out the same weekend as another terrific Australian family film, Blinky Bill. He agrees it's another sign of just how good a year it's turning out to be for Australian film.
He is especially proud of how the film's conservation message is grounded in reality - the Warrnambool penguin colony is now flourishing.
With the pending release of another fine film in which he stars, The Dressmaker, in just a few weeks and a stack of projects on his dance card, Jacobson - always a fun interview - was in especially high spirits when we spoke.

Maremma Sheepdog
The Maremma Sheepdog, in Italian Cane da pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese, usually referred to as just Maremmano, is a breed of livestock guardian dog indigenous to central Italy, particularly to Abruzzo and the Maremma region of Tuscany and Lazio. It has been used for centuries by Italian shepherds to guard sheep from wolves. The literal English translation of the name is The dog of the shepherds of the Maremma and Abruzzese region. The English name of the breed derives from that of the Maremma marshlands, where until recently shepherds, dogs and hundreds of thousands of sheep over-wintered, and where the breed is today abundant although sheep-farming has decreased substantially. The breed is widely employed in Abruzzo, where sheep herding remains vital to the rural economy and the wolf remains an active and protected predator. Similar breeds include the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, the Kuvasz of Hungary, the Tatra of Poland, the Cuvac of Slovakia and the Šarplaninac, with all of which it may share a common ancestor; and the Akbash Dog of Turkey.
