Midland Railway Butterley (Midland Road Trip Part 2)
A few weeks ago, I went on a weekend Midland road trip with Sunday taking place at the Midland Railway in Butterley, where I spent most of the day at Swanwick Junction.
It was a diesel day with only a class 31 running, but it was a nice day so it all went well and returned home after a 2 hour journey.

Midland Railway Butterley Station - A Day Out
Butterley Steam Railway
This is the last journey the 73129 made in daylight along the Butterley line, before going in for a full refurb.
The former British Railway Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 locomotive no. 73129, now based at the Midland Railway at Butterley, is the sole survivor of the last batch of 30 steam locomotives to be built at Derby Locomotive Works and is unique in being the only preserved Standard Class 5 fitted with Caprotti Valve Gear.
Out shopped from Derby Works in August 1956, it was allocated to Shrewsbury (84G) on the Western Region. In September 1958 it moved north to Patricroft shed (near Manchester), where it was to spend the remainder its working life until being withdrawn from traffic on 2nd December 1967.
It was bought for scrap by Woodham Bros. Ltd. and towed to their yard at Barry Island in South Wales for cutting up. But apart from having its non-ferrous fittings and pipe work removed, and loosing its tender, 73129 remained virtually intact and was subsequently purchased, together with the tender from 75079, by Derby Corporation in 1972 as a potential exhibit for the then embryonic Midland Railway Project.
The 32nd loco to leave Barry Scrap yard for preservation, 73129 was moved by rail back to Derby Loco Works for storage on 6th January 1973, and finally arrived the Midland Railway Centre on 14th February 1975. However, due to other priorities, little was done apart from some conservation and cosmetic restoration until late in 1993 when, with financial support from the Standard Five Fund, restoration to get 73129 back to full working order, began in earnest.
After ten years, the restoration of 73129 was nearing completion, at a cost of £75,000 plus thousands of hours of voluntary labour, and the first fire was lit on 22nd February 2003. Further assembly work took place over the next year and following release into traffic in 2005, 73129 has been hauling trains again, after a break of 38 years.
Since 2005, the locomotive has had further overhaul work completed at considerable cost, including new tyres and new superheater elements, and it has been a very popular locomotive both at home at MR-B and on visits to other heritage railways.

Industrial steam after August 1968 - Part 6 : Castle Donnington
Our search for real working steam after the cessation of BR's steam activity leads us this time into the semi-industrial wilds south of Derby, in which rural idyll a large power station was plonked in the 1950s alongside the River Trent. As was normal in those days, it was coal-fired and the combustive mineral was to be delivered by rail. Even though BR had turned its back on coal to power its locomotives it still had a massive client base in the coal industry and it was logical for both the National Coal Board and industrial users such as the CEGB to continue to use steam locomotives at their sites. Our film dates from 1972 and the Castle Donington locomotives (two identical Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns 0-4-0 saddle tanks built in 1954) would carry on in use until the late 1980s. Castle Donington No. 1 is today preserved at Butterley but the power station closed in 1994 and there is a Marks & Spenser's distribution depot now on the site!
