Outside Japan, when people hear Kansai, the first prefectures that come to mind are Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara. They are the holy trinity of Kansai tourism. And it’s not difficult at all to see why. The trio offers a perfect blend of modernity, heritage, and entertainment.
But Kansai is more than just these tourism powerhouses. The region is made up seven amazing prefectures, each with something unique and fascinating to offer to curious travelers. One of them is Mie.

The Netsuke Made in Ise are Characterized by a Rare Kind of Wood which is known as “The Wooden Jewel.”
Boxwood is called Jewel wood because they grow slowly in the cold weather and poor mountain soil. It takes for about 50 to 60 years to have only 6cm in diameter.
Its texture is hard, flexible and can be bent to allow the delicate work without breaking.
While their materials vary from ivory, horn, wood, bamboo and so on, artisans use boxwood collected from Mt. Asama in Mie Pref., West Japan, for Ise netsuke.
Ise Netsuke Craftsman: Kajiura Asuka (梶浦 明日香さん)
Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1981
Teacher: Nakagawa Tadamine (中川 忠峰さん)
======
In 2012, Ms. Kajiura participated in a contest about Ise Netsuke.
She has obtained the top grand prix of 1800 people nationwide.
Ms. Kajiura's previous job is a caster of NHK.
In 2007, she interviewed craftsmen who were involved in various traditional crafts on the program in charge. Among them, she was fascinated by Ise netsuke, which has delicate and graceful sculptures, and met Mr. Nakagawa (current master) and was also attracted by his gentle personality.
She retired from NHK in 2009 and became an apprentice to Nakagawa. Since then, she has been training under her teacher.

Mimuroto ji 三室戸寺 Magnificent Flower Display in Uji City, Kyoto!
At any time of the year Mimurotoji has spectacular floral displays, especially its azaleas, hydrangeas and lotus blossoms, which is why it is known as the 'Flower Temple.' Situated on Mt. Myojo above the rapids of the Uji River, the beautifully manicured gardens cascade down the hillside to the river. The temple has long been associated with the literary world of the Heian era because parts of the Tale of Genji are situated in Uji. It is even said that this is where the fictional character Ukifune is buried!

Japan's BLACK CASTLE|Day 74 - Shimane
Matsue Castle (松江城, Matsuejō) is one of only a dozen original castles in Japan, meaning that its main tower has survived to this day through fires, earthquakes and the anti-feudal demolitions of the Meiji Period. It is sometimes called the black castle after its darkly-colored, austere exterior.
Matsue Castle was completed in 1611, a few years after the last decisive battle of feudal Japan. In 1638, the fief and castle were reassigned to a branch of the Matsudaira clan, relatives of the ruling Tokugawa. Perched atop a hill and surrounded by a moat and thick walls, the castle was built to withstand a war, though, thanks to the timing of its construction, it never actually saw a battle. Major renovation works were undertaken in the 1950s to further preserve it, and the interior of the main keep now houses a museum displaying period arms and artifacts.
Izumo Taisha (出雲大社) is located in the city of Izumo in Shimane Prefecture, a one hour train ride west of Matsue. It is one of Japan's most important shrines. There are no records of exactly when Izumo Taisha was built, but it is often considered the oldest shrine in Japan, being already in existence in the early 700s as revealed by the nation's oldest chronicles.
Izumo used to be ruled by a powerful clan in pre-historic times, and the region plays a central role in Japan's creation mythology. The main deity (kami) enshrined at Izumo Taisha is Okuninushi no Okami. According to the creation myths, Okuninushi was the creator of the land of Japan and the ruler of Izumo. He also became known as the deity of good relationships and marriage. Visitors consequently clap their hands four times instead of the usual two times during their prayers: twice for themselves and twice for their actual or desired partners.
