DYA717 Japan May 23 26, 2017 Getting to Shirahama Kumano
DYA717 May 23-24, 2017 Getting to Kumano Started on my trip to Japan on 5/23. 5 a.m. pickup for a 7 a.m. flight – big mistake—never again. Too early! kekekeke I have pictures of the meals that I had along the way so the first part of the video is going to be mostly for you foodies. LAX still going under lots of renovations. United is using only gates 7 & 8. They’ve closed down gates at 6. Nov 25 – arrived at Kansai International Airport (KIX) at around 2:40 p.m. Got my JR railpass and jumped on the first train to Himeno station. I was supposed to transfer to a train to Wakayama but the conductor just told me to go to track 2. What he didn’t tell me was that the train on track 2 was a double train and was being split up, de-coupled, one going to KIX and the back half going to Wakayama. So, guess what? You know it, I rushed over and jumped on the front of the train so I was heading back to the airport. AU-WE! I jumped off at the next station and went back to Himeno station. This time I got on the back part of the train as they were de-coupling the train. So I got to Wakayama OK and transferred to another train to Shirahama. Got to Shirahama station around 6:45 p.m., jumped onto a cab and 1600-yen later I got to the Shirahama Seaside Hotel. Of course I got in late so my check-in just coincided with my assigned dinner time, so I dumped my junks in the room rushed downstairs. Nice big Japanese buffet dinner which the foodies should like. No strange food this time. No internet in my Japanese style tatami room so had to go down to the lobby to catch the free WI-FI. Onsen on the 2nd floor but I was too tired so showered in the room and crashed for the day. While I’m crashed out, you’re thinking why/what’s Kumano? Kumano is the area south of Osaka, on the Kii peninsular. Shirahama is a seaside onsen town and a nice break before I reach where I was aiming for. Shirahama is rated in the top 3 oldest onsens of Japan! The other 2 oldest? Arima Onsen near Kobe and Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama on Shikoku Island which I have visited. So, I can knock off another Japan top oldest 3 list! : ) AND, Shirahama onsen also rates in the top 3 Biggest onsens in Japan along with Beppu in Kyushu and Atami on the Izu Peninsular. I got to knock off another top biggest 3 list! : ) Nov 26 – 6:00 a.m. onsen furo. Nice setup – a jacuzzi pool, 3 other pools and one outside rotenburo (outdoor pool). Breakfast at 7 a.m. Started BURA-BURA at 8:30 a.m. and returned around 1:30 p.m. with a coupla rest stops. First tour spot sign I saw pointed to a museum and a temple. So I figured I’ll pass on the museum and just go see the temple. No dice. 500-yen gets you into the Shirahama Museum and the Kanki Shrine. There are arrows showing you the path to take. Wow, surprise! The museum had India artifacts and some erotic stuffs. So I guess I gotta edit them out of the Youtube. Then the arrows point you to the Shrine and on the way out of the shrine there are sub-shrines dedicated to sex organs. Wow, talk about adult related material which I also edited out of the Youtube video. Not to worry you nosy buggers. I’ll attach the pictures separately so you can be shocked as I was! Kekekeke : ) OK, walked some more and came across the Sensojiki rock formations in the water which look like tatami mats. Then I came across Engetsu Island an interesting rock formation in the ocean. Then the Mifune Ashiyu (free onsen hot water footbath). Then the Kumano Sanshyo Jinja (shrine). Then the business district of Shirahama. They had a DAISO and several convenience stores. Then Shirahama white sand beach. Went past a Tsukumoto Ashiyu (free foot bath). Then Shirahama’s Fishermen’s Wharf. Then the Senjojiki Rock Plateau. Then the Sandanbeki Cliffs. You pay 1300-yen to ride the elevator down to sea-level into the caves to watch the waves rush in and out. Took a refreshment break at one of the restaurants around the cliffs. Then I decided to head back but by another route. Headed up the hill from the cliffs, ran into the Shirahama Golf Club. Looks pretty tough. It’s a hilly course and you’re playing among the trees. Then I totally lost my way so I was going round and round. Kekekeke Anyone with me would get really PO’d with me but I was having a grand time with my walking exercise. Finally I stopped at a Family Mart convenience store, had a beer and snack and asked the young lady where the Seaside hotel was. Turns out was around the corner, hidden by the hills. I was thinking of going off in a different direction so she saved me a few steps. Kekekeke : ) I got back to the hotel in time for the afternoon onsen furo which just re-opened after cleaning and switching the men/women sides. The onsen pool décor was different from the one last night. Was OK. I asked for an earlier time and got a dinner slot at 6 p.m. Sending the Youtube video to y’all and then crashing!
