Mlabri Tribe - Yellow Leaf people - Hammockmonkeys.org
The Mlabri are an enigmatic group of about 300 people who, until a few decades ago, used to live a nomadic life as hunters and gatherers in the dense forests and high mountains of Laos and Northern Thailand. For shelter, they would build temporary structures of bamboo sticks thatched with fresh, green banana leaves and occupy these for a while, until the banana leaves turned yellow. Since the proof of their existence consisted mostly of these abandoned huts, they were given the traditional Thai name of Phi Tong Luang, meaning Spirits of the Yellow Leaves. However, since they are peaceful people and not ghosts, they wish to be referred to as People of the forest.
There is some controversy about the Mlabri's origin, but at present they are recognized as (new) Thai citizens. They have had to struggle long time for this, and many problems started when their natural habitat was taken away due to deforestation. Because at that time they couldn't own their own land, they had to work for other tribes and often faced slave like servitude, forced tour shows etc. Some 30 years ago, they started receiving help from a missionary and his family. Great steps were achieved in the areas of education and health, but the need for a steady income remained.
In 1996, an adventurous Swiss motorbike tour guide who had formerly worked as a textile engineer, discovered the village and was struck by the women's skills in making string bags from the fiber of jungle vines. Occasionally these bags would make a sale as souvenirs, but never enough to become a reliable source of income. As an alternative, the idea came to teach the Mlabri how to weave hammocks and such was the beginning of one of the most successful development projects in the area.
The Mlabri adopted this new handicraft that seemed to go quite well with their quiet life style and started off with the production of the original Mlabri hammock, a.k.a. the Jungle Hammock. Meanwhile, they have also mastered the process of dying the cotton yarn as well as some more intricate weaving techniques, such as our sitting hammocks and V-weaves. Currently there are 9 different styles of hammocks available, all with a choice of over 40 designs!
Originally conceived and developed as an alternative source of income for the Mla Bri people, meanwhile the project has expanded to include other disadvantaged groups in rural Thailand, notably the Hmong and Northern Thai communities who live in the same general area as the Mla Bri at Ban Bunyuen. Many of these weavers are older women, for whom field work is no longer an option. Others are young women with small children to care for. Some are men, who have found this an attractive means of supplementing their income in off season.
Every hammock is produced in a healthy and family oriented environment (the home village) where each weaver can work at his/her own chosen speed. Honest wages are received and no discrimination is made on the basis of ethnicity, gender, age, religion, education or office intrigues.
Weaving hammocks has given new status and self respect to these people. They are productive members of their families, communities and villages. The confidence they have is reflected in the quality of their handiwork.
None of this would have been possible without the people's own enthusiasm, or yours!
Thank you for helping out in name of the Hammockmonkeys. Happy hammocking!
2014 Travel Vlog #3 - Karen hill tribes
Mike had an interesting experience accompanying an organisation called The River as they visited Karen hill tribe communities in the mountains of northwestern Thailand with whom they have built a relationship.
After a sputtering start to the experience, it all worked out and Mike managed to score some good footage having had an illuminating experience and becoming well-acquainted with the River team and their ethos.
Check out a preview of the footage that Mike has cut together along with his day's adventure to get there.

FARANG: The Story of Chef Andy Ricker of Pok Pok Thai Empire
Subscribe to Munchies here:
Farang, the Thai word for foreigner, is the story of how chef Andy Ricker took a 25 year obsession and spun it into the Pok Pok restaurant empire. While impetus behind Andy opening a restaurant in the first place was a decision based wanting to be able to travel and not continue his house painting business, it became more than that. The focus of Andy's mission soon became to represent the culture and food of the people in Northern Thailand as faithfully as possible. He is constantly reinforcing the idea that he is not a chef, but merely a person who is helping to curate this cuisine in America. In the film Andy introduces us to 3 of his main inspirations Thailand for which he based some of his most successful dishes. Farang covers Andy's story from his childhood to present day, and was filmed between Chiang Mai, Portland, and New York. The filming was mostly done in May 2013 as Andy was getting ready to open up 6th restaurant, Sen Yai.

Lisbon FREE Walking Tour & Portuguese FOOD!
We went on a free walking tour in Lisbon with Chill Out Tours and loved it! Our guide was really funny and we loved learning about the city. Lunch at Super Mario was really authentic feeling, especially since we were the only tourists in there! (And we ended up running into our guide there!) The food was delicious. Of course the gelato at Nanarellas was one of the biggest highlights of the day!

Thanks to Majeed and Ernest for taking me on this extreme Ghanaian street food tour of Accra. We had an incredible time eating and exploring Accra!
Jamestown, Accra, Ghana - We started off this Ghanaian street food tour of Accra in Jamestown, along the coast in Accra. The neighborhood is home mostly to a fishing community, but they also are known for having some of the best boxers in Ghana. We walked around Jamestown, and tried a few snacks and drinks along the way.
Palm wine - 2 GHC ($0.40)
Egg - 1 GHC ($0.20) per egg
Tigernut milk - 2 GHC ($0.40)
Kenkey (Kenkey - West African staple made from ground corn) and fried fish - After walking around Jamestown, we found a small restaurant to eat kenkey, a common Ghanaian staple made from corn, and here, eaten with fried fish. The restaurant was awesome, and the owners were very friendly. We ordered some food, and also had the chance to watch some of the cooking production. This was probably my favorite meal of this entire Ghanaian street food tour.
Total price - 20 GHC ($4.30) for all
We continued eating our way through Accra, here are a few more of the meals and snacks we tried:
Kelewele and gizzard - 5.5 GHC ($1.20)
Coconut - 2 GHC ($0.40) per coconut
Mama Vee Waakye - We couldn’t have an ultimate Ghana food tour without eating waakye, and so Majeed took me to one of his favorite spots. Waakye is a beloved Ghanaian food, a mix of many different things, and it’s incredible delicious. It wa also a huge plate!
Price - 13 GHC ($2.80)
Hwe Nea Nyame Aye Chop Bar (translated to “See what God has done” restaurant) - For one of our final meals of the day, we stopped at one of their favorite local neighborhood restaurants to eat fufu, along with massively giant jungle snails. They were delicious.
Price - 26 GHC ($5.60)
Chinchinga - Many places around the world offer grilled meat on skewer over charcoal, and in Ghana they are called chinchinga. Especially if you enjoy meat, you can’t miss them.
Price - 3 GHC ($0.60) per stick
It was an incredible day of street food in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. Thanks again to Majeed and Ernest for taking me around!

LONG LIFE FOOD in Hunza Valley - HEAVEN ON EARTH, Pakistan | Pakistani Food Tour!
SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos every week
T-shirts and caps:
Thank you to Ali (Pakistan Travel Market):
I want to say a massive thank you to Ali (Pakistan Travel Market): Without him, this entire trip wouldn’t have been possible.
Also, thank you to Hunza Serena Inn ( for sponsoring our stay in Hunza Valley.
The goal of today’s food tour was to uncover some of the secrets of the long life food of Hunza Valley. Especially traditionally, people were known to live very long and healthy lives - a combination of eating seasonally, lots of nuts, and apricots, and fresh mountain air - we also discovered a few dishes that must have led to long life.
But we began our day in Gilgit, and first thing at daybreak, we drove about 20 minutes outside of Gilgit to start our morning from a strategic viewpoint. There’s a confluence where three of the highest mountain ranges in the world - Himalayas (Mount Everest), Karakorams (K2), and Hindu Kush, mountains come together. It’s a magical place, and we were literally the only people there.
We then headed back to Serena Gilgit Hotel for breakfast before starting our day to Hunza Valley. The drive was spectacular from start to finish - you will literally feel your jaw dropping as you drive and you almost cannot believe the scenery will possibly get better… and it does.
Chapshoro Point - Along the Karakoram Highway from Gilgit to Hunza Valley one of the most famous foods is chapshoro, a meat filled dough pocket. It’s a great tea snack - and we’d be having a few more of these today.
Total price - 900 PKR ($6.74)
Hunza Valley - We arrived to Hunza Valley and immediately checked in to Hunza Serena Inn, with an almost unbelievable view from our patio.
Baltit Fort - We quickly hiked up to Baltit Fort, a spectacular and iconic fort within Hunza Valley and then walked down for a quick bite to eat.
Hunza Food Pavilion - Just a small little cosy restaurant, yet so inviting and so many good aromas coming out of the kitchen. We ordered chapshoro again, and daodo soup, both of which were amazing.
Total price - 630 PKR ($4.72)
Osho Maraka - Hunza Serena Inn - We then headed back to the hotel where they wanted to prepare a local Hunza Valley food lunch for us. The food was good, a little on the plain side for me, but very fresh and local ingredients.
Eagles Nest - Next we drove up one of the main mountains of Hunza Valley for the view. Although we were late for the sunset, the view was still spectacular.
Traditional Hunza Valley food - In the evening is when the real authentic Hunza Valley food and cultural learning began. We were invited (thanks to the Gilgit Baltistan tourism ministry for setting it up) to a 400 year old home for a time of music and local Hunza Valley food. The old home was beautiful, and they immediately started playing amazing local music. The food was authentic and local - lots of whole grains, walnuts and almonds, and plenty of apricot oil. One of the dishes, a tortilla like bread filled with walnut paste and apricot oil was one of the secret dishes of longevity - so I was told! Whatever the case, the food, people, and experience, was outstanding.
By this time I have to stay I was tired, cold, and ready to go back to the hotel to sleep, but they said, we need to stop at one more place.
It was completely dark, and looked abandoned.
But we stepped inside a home, and there were at least 20 people huddled in the house, waiting for us.
I was blown away and humbled.
They made us tea and a few local pancake like snacks. It was beyond special.
Thank you to everyone involved, and to the families for their amazing hospitality and kindness. Another absolutely incredible day of food and people in Pakistan.
