Mike Horn & Mercedes Benz present: The PANGAEA Project
Taking responsibility for tomorrow today: Mercedes-Benz, Mike Horn and the PANGAEA Project.
The 45-year-old South African, Mike Horn, is acknowledged as the greatest eco explorer of our time. His exceptional adventures extend the boundaries of human achievement, foster environmental education and encourage sustainable living awareness.
His latest endeavor is The PANGAEA Project and Young Explorers Program.
Mike Horn and Mercedes-Benz have the same aim: to take responsibility for our future. Together they want the best. With no half-measures. This is why Mercedes-Benz supports PANGAEA.
From Mercedes: As the inventor of the motor car, our involvement in this project underscores the comprehensive solutions which have been part of out value chain for many years. Innovative technologies such as BlueTEC, BlueDIRECT, HYBRID, BlueTEC HYBRID, E-CELL or F-CELL. Here at Mercedes-Benz, we call these solutes Blue EFFICIENCY. With our involvement in PANGAEA, we want to inspire people all over the world to address and rethink the most important topic of our time. After all, it is our entire Earth.
Mercedes-Benz is the main sponsor of the PANGAEA Project as Mike Horn and Mercedes share the same aims. Both are pioneers, not least when it comes to ploughing every effort into sustainable actions for the protection of our environment each in their own way. Excitement, perfection and responsibility -- these are our common objectives for the future.
The PANGAEA Project is: A 4-year circumnavigation of the world through a series of 12 expeditions each to different terrain including mountain, desert, ocean and arctic snow. For each Pangaea expedition, Mike and his team select eight high school or college students between the ages of 15-20 to accompany him.
The expedition is named pangaea after the supercontinent that existed 250 million years ago. It represents the ultimate objective in creating ONE WORLD which Mike Horn and his Young Explorers set out by land and see to Explore, Learn and Act. Mike Horn's mission aims to unite the continents again with a powerful environmental message of sustainability, conservation and preservation.
The PANGAEA project, which continues through 2012, has already covered over 100,000 miles, reaching the North and South Poles and crossing all the continents and oceans. During each leg of the expedition, educational specialists join Mike Horn and the young explorers, sharing their knowledge of fauna and flora and endemic biodiversity and helping PANGAEA to understand the fragile and important interaction between humans, nature and the elements. Based on the unique issues learned to be affecting each area, the young explorers work to design and implement projects to further analyze, educate and somehow improve the region thereby leaving each stop along the way better because Pangaea has been there.
Mike Horn's vessel -- also named PANGAEA -- is a double-masted sailboat measuring 32 meters (115 feet) in length and serves as one of the world's largest and most versatile expedition sailboats. The hull is made from recyclable aluminum. The interior conference room cabin is made of sustainable bamboo and low-energy LED lights run throughout the vessel. The sails and deck are equipped with flexible solar cells. Also installed are Electrolux energy-efficient appliances and both the integrated waste-recycling systems and the on-board power generators meet strict ecological requirements.
PANGAEA the sailing vessel is also an acronym:
Pan Global Adventure for Envitronmental Action
BECOMING A YOUNG EXPLORERS PROGRAM CANDIDATE:
Mike Horn and his team are always searching for motivated high school or college students interested in joining him on the next phase of the expedition.
If a young adult applies and is selected as a candidate, they are flown out (at the expedition's expense) to Chateau d'Oex, Switzerland -- Mike Horn World Headquarters -- in the Swiss Alps for a 10-day training and analysis camp. Selection camps include intensive courses and tests in the technological, environmental, physical and communication skills required to prepare the participants to meet the challenges that would be required from them if chosen for the expedition.
All workshops and outings are run by experienced, professional instructors. Fitness testing is conducted by representatives flown out from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
On the last day of each Selection Camp the next class of Young Explorers is announced. Young Explorers chosen accompany Mike on a three-week expedition (all expenses paid). Upon return back home, full of knowledge and unique experience, Young Explorers bear responsibility to share the PANGAEA message with their peers and local community networks. They are asked to perform the third piece of the Mike Horn mantra [Explore + Learn + ACT] through the organization of Act Projects in their schools/cities/states/nations.

YEP meeting in Germany, Stuttgart - May 2010
Video: Manuel Löffler
It was about sharks, about the pollution of our oceans by plastic, it was about the Pangaea Food Gardening Project, about acting, exchanging ideas, meeting each other, discussing and having fun.
On 29th May the second Young Explorers Meeting was held in Stuttgart. We all arrived with high expectations as YEP meetings are well known for unforgettable encounters and spontaneous actions, which didn't come off badly, this time.
At 09:00 we met at the train station in Stuttgart. Lörrach, Basel, Darmstadt, Freiburg and Heidelberg, we all had quite a long journey behind us. But already at the station was clear: It was worth it. Together we made our way to Cafe Künstlerbund at the Schlossplatz in Stuttgart. After Manuel and Florence gave us a short presentation on their India Expedition, Simon gave us an introduction on the Pangaea Shark Project.
Then we went....
