Anreise Liparische Inseln - Ab Flughafen Catania nach Milazzo und Lipari
Jetzt Kanal abonnieren

How to travel from Palermo to Vulcano on the Aeolian Islands.
In September 2018, we flew to Palermo Airport, travelled by bus into the city and then caught the train to Milazzo and the boat to Vulcano. We had a great time on the Aeolian Islands.
There is a train from Palermo Airport into the city but it wasn't running when we arrived. Instead, we bought train tickets from the bus. There is a ticket desk in the main arrivals hall. To find the bus exit the airport and turn right, easy peasey.
The bus takes just under an hour to get to Palermo. It stops at a few places in the city and terminates at Palermo Central Train Station. Tickets for the train to Milazzo (port) can easily be purchased from a ticket desk or electronic multi lingual machine.
The train is fairly comfortable but there are no refreshments on board so take your own. Remember to validate your ticket in the machine before boarding.
The train follows a scenic coastal route passing through holiday destinations including Cefalu. We arrived in Milazzo about 2.5 hours later.
We were approached by taxi drivers outside Milazzo station offering to take us to the port and trying to convince us that the port is a looooooong way away. We didn't think so, and so we walked. It's about a 40/50 minute 5km brisk walk. We managed with our rucksacks and a baby in a trolley. If you can afford it, take the taxi. If you want an adventure and have time to stop for a coffee take a walk!
We travelled on the Siremar ferry. The boat was about to leave when we arrived at the port but the good folk of Siremar held it whilst I ran across the road and purchased our tickets. I swiftly ran back, the bridge was pulled up and we were away!
The voyage takes around 90 minutes. We later found out that there is a hydrofoil that takes less than 1 hour. The ferry is more roomy. The boats are cancelled in bad weather. That happened one day of out 12 night trip.
We stayed 9 nights on Vulcano and then three nights on Lipari. Some people though we were mad to spend so long on Vulcano as there isn't much to do. It worked well for us. We wanted to chill out and with a baby we couldn't be as adventurous as usual anyway. I did run up the Volcano alone twice before sunrise. It was spectacular and I'd recommend you do it too if you are fit enough. (See the time lapse videos on this channel).
We weren't as impressed by Lipari. Horses for courses. The town is much bigger almost urban but with good pedestrian streets full of shops and restaurants. If you had a car and could travel around the island it might have been better and many people love it there so don't miss it out.
The Aeolian Islands were lovely. Good food and beaches. Eating out is expensive. It cost about €50 for two main courses and half a litre of wine
We stayed at the Hotel Eros and couldn't recommend it enough. We travelled back to Palermo a reverse route as that in the video. We had two nights in the city at the end. Palermo is a really fab city.I think it's one of the best in Europe.
Happy travels!

My Favorite Gear. With my lifestyle I travel with everything I own so I’m very selective on my gear. My setup is 1 big suitcase (23 kilos). 1 Laptop Backpack with all of my electronic gear. 1 Carryon luggage that is stuffed with my motorcycle gear (I hate bringing this everywhere but when you ride a riding suit and proper gear is necessary).
