St. Mary's Church, Mildenhall, Suffolk, England (video tour)
St. Mary's Church in Mildenhall is a beautiful 15th Century building. It is open year round and admission is free. There is a donation box at the entrance that you may leave donations in. All money goes towards the care and upkeep of the church. Occasionally they do Tower Tours where you can take a guided tour up the bell tower. Those tours usually have a very small admission fee which also goes towards the church.
Jenkins awarded the church 4 stars in his 'England's Thousand Best Churches'
This Suffolk church contains the altar tomb of Henry Barton, Lord Mayor of London in 1416 and 1428 and the font bears his coat of arms. Dick Whittington was Lord Mayor before and after Sir Henry.
A magnificent porch with vaulted roof – the largest in Suffolk
Spectacular 15th century roof filled with angels taking flight.
Among some of the finest medieval wood carving in England.
Huge and flamboyant east window dating back to 1300 and now filled with beautiful 19th century glass.
Extraordinary carvings on the 20th century bench ends.
Perhaps because of the rather low key nature of the town centre, St Mary dominates its surrounding settlement like no other church in Suffolk does. You can't help but be struck by the sheer immenseness of the building. It is the biggest church in Suffolk, almost 60m long and 20m wide, with a tower 40m high. Virtually all of it is original, hardly anything of it is a Victorian extension. It is a church of superlatives; the 14th century west window is considered one of England's best, the roof the finest in East Anglia. The church contains Britain's biggest Royal Arms, and you enter through one of the biggest church porches in England - and you will be able to do this, because the church is open all day, every day.

Mildenhall is a small market town and civil parish in Suffolk, England. It is part of the non-metropolitan district of Forest Heath and has a population of 9,906 people, increasing to 10,315 at the 2011 Census. The town is near the A11 and is located 60 km (37 mi) north-west of county town, Ipswich.
Mildenhall centres on a market place with a 16th-century hexagonal market cross and town pump. The town's market is held here on every Friday and originated as a weekly chartered market in, it is believed, the 15th century. In 1934, Mildenhall was the start point of the MacRobertson Air Race to Melbourne, Australia. Mildenhall has its own radio station, ZACK FM (Forest Heath Public Radio), broadcasting on 105.3 FM; the transmitter is located at the top of St Mary's Church and radiates 100 W. The station format is classic and current hits plus specialist shows, and broadcasts 24 hours a day with a mix of music, news and information Mildenhall is mentioned in passing in the Pink Floyd song 'Let There Be More Light' on the 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets as a speculated location for first contact between humanity and extraterrestrial life.
The town has a bus station which was completed in 2005. Regular bus services run to the neighbouring towns of Brandon, Bury St. Edmunds, Newmarket and Thetford. National Express operate daily coach services to Norwich, London (Victoria Coach Station), Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted Airports. Mildenhall railway station was the terminus of the Cambridge to Mildenhall railway until its closure in 1962.
Mildenhall has a Non-League football club [Mildenhall Town F.C.] who play at Recreation Way. It also has one of the region's leading cricket clubs, Mildenhall Cricket Club, playing at Wamil Way. In 2016 the 1XI won the Two Counties Championship and was promoted to the East Anglian Premier Cricket League. Notable players have included England international Tymal Mills, England Lions' Tom Westley and Essex Women's Lilly Reynolds. There is a leisure centre on Bury Road which is about 5–10 minutes away from the town square.
Mildenhall is perhaps most famous for the discovery in 1942 of the Mildenhall Treasure. Now at the British Museum, the treasure is a hoard of Roman silver objects buried in the 4th century. In 1946 the discovery was made public and the treasure acquired by the British Museum; Roald Dahl wrote an article about the find which was published firstly in the Saturday Evening Post, and later as The Mildenhall Treasure (a short story) in his short story collection The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More.

A Very Wiltshire-y 6 at Mildenhall (Minal)
Firstly, do NOT call this place Mildenhall in front of the locals; you'll get a bollocking!! To them, it's actually MINAL (pronounced mine-all) so now you know!!
These are a proper Wiltshire 6. The bells themselves aren't anything special -- except they go more like a 4 or 5cwt ring than 7cwt -- but the atmosphere is very Wiltshire-Country!! There is a huge board in the Ringing Room with Reverse Canterbury Surprise on -- guess which method it actually refers to?
Also, the sallies are extremely thin (except the 5 which has a newer rope) and the treble sally is extremely low, with that rope in particular (they all are!!) extremely long!! I can just imagine the old Wiltshire-y ringers here with their peak caps, pipes in mouths, and oil lamps...
There is a staircase to the belfry which restricts the positions of 4 and 5 -- the 4 even has 2 black feet marked to show (TELL!!!) the ringer where to stand!! It is similar to bellminsterboys video of Lytchett Minster!! Only you don't stand on the staircase, you stand with your back leaning on it... The 5 and 6 are the only ones with any weight to them, and that's only because the tenor is the biggest and the 5 has a newer, therefore heavier rope!!
They go well enough, but all go a lot lighter than what they are... treble has virtually no resistance, a slight pull and she's gone... literally!! The 5 has a weightier rope so it goes a bit heavier, though it is very light set, and the tenor is more like 5 or 6 than 7cwt!! A pleasant 6 though, well worth a visit. Popular for peals, and particular ones of Minor, which is very understandable!!
Tenor 7-0-26 in Bflat.
