Olympic Torch Hit The Mile 0 Post - Dawson Creek, BC
The Olympic Torch reaches the historic mile 0 post in Dawson Creek, BC on January 30th.
Alaska Highway (Mile 0 - Dawson Creek)
We start our Alaska Highway (Alcan Highway) from Dawson Creek and the official Mile 0, we visit the Alcan Highway House (or museum) which is well worth a stop.
Dawson Creek has everything a full-time RVer needs to stock up for the Alaska Adventure. We had a parcel coming from the USA that didn't arrive on time and the Canada Post folk in Dawson Creek were fantastic and helped get the parcel to Whitehorse in time for us.
We had a great time looking around, visiting the Historical Centre and getting a few odd jobs done.
Meet a lovely couple and followed them to the next stop and said hi again.

Dawson Creek is a very beautiful city in the northeastern British Columbia, Canada. Municipality of Dawson Creek is of 24.37 s. km and had population count around 11,583 in 2012.
Dawson Creek derived its name from a creek of same name which runs through all of this community. Tourist Places in Dawson Creek, British Columbia make Dawson Creek an amazing tourist place in British Columbia.
Creek was named just after George Mercer Dawson by a member of land survey team when they all passed out through this area in August 1879. Once a very small farming community, Dawson Creek became regional centre just after western terminus of Northern Alberta Railways which extended there in year 1932.
In 1942, community rapidly grew as US Army and used rail terminus as a trans shipment point during construction of Alaska Highway. In 1950’s, city got connected to the interior of the British Columbia via a railway and a highway through Rocky Mountains and since 1960s, growth of Dawson Creek slowed down.
Dawson Creek is situated in windy and dry prairie land of Peace River Country. As seat of Peace River Regional District and a service centre for rural areas of the Peace River, this city has been called as “Capital of the Peace”. It is known as “Mile 0 City”,that refers to the location at southern end of Alaska Highway.
This city has a museum, an art gallery and a heritage interpretation village. Annual events include rodeo and a fall fair.

In 2009 the BC Provincial Capital Commission did a series of short history docs about various aspects of BC. With the end of the PCC in March of 2014 it is not clear what will happen to these videos so I thought would post them to ensure they remain online.

Fort Nelson & Dawson Creek, BC, Canada - Alaska Highway
Today we continued our mini-caravan south thru Fort Nelson, BC, Canada to Dawson Creek, BC.
In Fort Nelson we spent the night and visited the Fort Nelson Museum. This was a fantastic museum filled with everything imaginable! We were able to meet the man who had spent most of his life collecting all of the memorabilia! He had a little of everything from local artifacts to many old cars. Trisha was able to sweet talk him into giving her a ride in his Model T!
The next day we continued our journey to Dawson Creek which is ‘Mile 0’ of the Alaska Highway! There we boondocked in at a Walmart for 2 nights and had a Pot Luck dinner right in the parking lot where I attached the ‘Alaska’ sticker to the map on the back of my camper! We also visited their ongoing ‘Dawson Creek Fall Fair and Stampede’. At the Stampede (Rodeo) we saw lots of rides and a great Rodeo including Cattle Roping and Bull Riding! We also watched a band that featured the lead singer playing a Base guitar hand made out of a Chevy gas tank – which sounded great!!
After the rodeo, we re-connected with some of our other Alaska Tour friends at a local campground and had a great Pot Luck dinner including Elk Burgers!

In Dawson Creek we stopped at Mile 0 the start of the Alaskan Hwy. Then on to Watson Lake we stopped at the sign post forest, can you find our sign? After that we headed to Whitehorse to visit the Yukon Transportation Museum where we learned about the history of the Klondike River and the Yukon. We also took a drive and a hike up Gray's Mountain we saw a black bear but not fast enough to get a photo. The scenery was awesome I almost conquered my fear of heights!

OUR STORY | HOW THE FREEDOM THEORY CAME TO BE
WATCH FROM THE BEGINNING |
We live in a 33 foot fifth wheel tiny home camper that we are currently traveling the USA in! It is an alternative lifestyle we find that it brings us the most freedom. Living in a RV full time was never something we planned to do. Instead we jumped right into it. In a matter of 30 days. We bought a RV and the following day bought a truck to tow with!

Tok to Whitehorse to Liard Hot Springs
Well, the past few days have been quite the driving days as we head back south to the US now that our Alaska Tour is complete!
Four of us have decided to travel together (Charlie & Patti Wiley, Denny & Claire Smith, Kent & Trisha Campbell, Charlie & Jeannie Coushaine). The past few days we have traveled from Valdez to Tok to Whitehorse to Liard Hot Springs! It has been quite a few miles each day, compounded by lots of repairs to the Alaska Highway (ALCAN).
However, we have seen spectacular vistas along the way, lots of wildlife, and even boondocked with a bonfire beside the highway! To top that off, we stopped at Liard Hot Springs for a hot soak in the naturally fed springs…priceless!

Alaska 2018 - 3 [Beautiful British Columbia! Prince George - Beaver Lake]
Beaver Lake Recreation Area is a small campground off of highway 77 just past Fort Nelson. The best site for a larger rig is at the end of the campground road at the back of the turnaround. The road in is unpaved and a little bumpy but we didn’t have any problems with our class A. Each site has a nice picnic table and a fire ring. There is no cell service here. It is free and a ranger rolled through just as we were about to leave. Otherwise, it was just us down there.
We’re already far enough north that it’s staying light until around midnight and starting to get light around 3:30am.
The drive from Prince George to Dawson Creek was beautiful! We stopped by the Alaska Highway Mile 0 sign and had lunch. Then we drove past the real mile 0 sign in the road and headed towards Fort Nelson.
The drive from Dawson Creek to Fort Nelson was kind of boring. Just trees and not as much interesting scenery. We stopped for gas in Fort Nelson. It was $1.46/litre. Ouch!
